Carbon Literacy for Leaders in Education

Carbon Literacy For Leaders In Education

In partnership with Satori Education, TeachingLive is pleased to announce a Carbon Literacy course for leaders in education designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to develop an appropriate school response to climate change.

Accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project, the course has been specifically designed for school leaders and is fully aligned with the DfE’s “Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy launched in April 2022.

Learners will be supported to identify practical steps, adopt policies and plan to move their institution to a low carbon future.

Who should attend the course

  • Senior School and Multi Academy Trust Leaders
  • Senior School and Multi Academy Trust Sustainability Leaders
  • Senior School and Multi Academy Trust Operations Team members e.g. Finance, Business and Operations managers

We aim to support learners in achieving their personal sustainability goals and to provide the knowledge and tools that will help accelerate the collective change in understanding and behaviour to meet the climate challenge across their organisations.

The course is in three parts:

Part 1: Online self-paced e-learning module (approximately 3 hours)

The first part of the course is an online e-learning module that covers the science of climate change, the scientific consensus and impacts. This element is delivered through a Moodle powered online course with plenty of video and multimedia elements. This section can be completed at your own pace. However, completion is mandatory before moving to Part 2.

Part 2: A 3 hour online webinar

Led by John Sutton, a fully qualified Carbon Literacy Trainer, the webinar focuses on the appropriate response of education to the climate crisis. This includes looking at government policy, developing a sustainability plan in school and the specific issues that schools face in delivering change in this challenging area. Time will be devoted to looking at organisations and resources that can support your journey.

Part 3: Accreditation

In order to receive accreditation from the Carbon Literacy Project all participants are required to submit two pledges to reduce the carbon impact of their activities. One must be a personal work related pledge and the second must be organisational. These could be as simple as, for example increasing personal active travel to school, and implementing a school sustainability strategy. Support in developing these pledges will be given throughout the course and the submission and accreditation process will be managed by TeachingLive.
