“Hold this penguin, ” he said, staring at Poppy.

It is important to add on the ‘ing’ clause which is rather like a stage direction and shows the reader what the speaker is doing. Here are more examples:

“What is your name?” she replied, tapping her foot impatiently.

“I see you have been feeding my owl, ” he said, wagging his finger at Poppy.

“This is my wonderful Emporium, ” Mr Luciano exclaimed, throwing his arms wide.

“I am innocent!” shouted Poppy, spinning round and facing her tormentor.
