The following day, it unfortunately rained. Rain spilled from the sky like a tap and it flooded the roads so nobody could even drive their cars around anymore. Mrs Amina stood in Sarim’s window cleaning, she spoke looking down and dejected. “The overflow, we’ve all been
through rain, but not this type.”
But Sarim hadn’t got any time for Mrs Amina’s mumbling. If he stayed any longer he would just be torturing himself so he knew he had to find Janat Go-Lucky or Milkyway would be gone forever.
As soon as Sarim stepped outside one raindrop ruined everything, the rain was dripping down his hair looking like he had taken a shower. He needed the sun to towel him. He ran through the meadow shouting for Janat but had no luck. The only luck he had was just getting more wet. It was like the rain loved him.
He rang the damp doorbell on Mrs Worthington’s door. She was happy that she was inside unlike Sarim and not all soaked. “ Don’t you dare even decide to come in here, I just mopped the floors, they look shiny and you wouldn’t want to make them wet would you now?” she screeched
“ Sorry, Mrs Worthington, but I care to wonder if you might happen to know where Janat Go-Lucky is this morning?” Sarim asked respectfully.
Mrs Worthington sniffed and looked down at Sarim, all she could smell
was a wet dog. “No, now get away from my house, I can’t handle the stench,” she snapped, slamming the door in his face.
Sarim stood by a big green gate. Then he realised – Janat loved to play with animals like Milkyway, so maybe he had gone to see him? Maybe Janat overcame her fear?
And she had. Sarim found her sitting on the grass underneath the tree whispering. Milkyway was sitting right next to her, his orange yellowish fur dripping with raindrops.
“ He, he, he is my friend now, I hope you don’t mind,” he stuttered.
That was about 80 years ago. Janat later went to war but never came home. Milkyway stayed in the village so proud to be there, but then Sarim realised that Milkyway had disappeared, just as she had arrived.
Sometimes I still see her in my dreams. A clear ghost in my life. A glowing memory of beloved friendship.
