Chapter 1
It was a wintry afternoon in December. The snow drifted down and smothered the darkening streets of Stroud. A few streetlights had been lit, casting shadows in corners where anything might be hidden.
Joseph Suivo ignored the snow. He was staring ahead at the checkpoint. He tugged his coat closer and shivered as another gust of snow swept down Tinker’s Alley.
He could see a soldier checking people’s passes, turning most of them back from the border between the lower town and the rest of Stroud, where the larger houses stood.
“Next,” snapped the guard, stamping his feet. He held out a gloved hand and Joseph handed over his pass. “Where are you headed, young man?” he snapped, staring at Joseph.
“I’m taking some shoes round to a customer for my dad,” Joseph replied, smiling as best he could. The guard sniffed and curtly nodded his head.
A moment later, Joseph was walking through the upper town. Here the streets were wider, shop lights glittered and the people chattered as if they had no care in the world. How Joseph wished that he was like them and not a foreigner in his own land.
Taking a short cut down Salter’s Alley, Joseph lowered his head afraid to catch anyone’s eye. Head down, keep out of trouble. His dad had drummed that into him so many times.
He swung round as a man that he hadn’t noticed before, rapidly approached, grabbing his arm and tugging him into the shadows at the side of the alley.
“I’ll be having that,” he said, grabbing Joseph’s parcel. There was a pause. “Plus any cash you have!” Joseph ducked down, stamped on the man’s boot and ran up the alley, ducking down a siding. But the end was blocked by a tall, brick wall!
The man’s shadow cast down the siding towards Joseph. It seemed to stretch out and hold him in its invisible, ebony arms. Joseph gasped. He could see the man’s eyes glittering with greed as he shuffled forwards, towards Joseph. Then he noticed a small doorway tucked behind a pile of rubbish and, a moment later, he was inside.
