Chapter 3

During the night, Geoffrey was heartbroken. He could not understand how they could ever escape. Ezzy, however, was stalking around the freezing cold basement looking for a way to break free.

She continued to look for an escape route. She realised that there was no way out and that they were too far away for anyone to hear them. Geoffrey decided if only he could find a loose brick, they would be able to break free but alas, he could not find one.

Walking up and down, Geoffrey heard a loud squeak echo through the room. Curious, he decided to take a closer look. Moving the loose floorboard out of the way, he saw an old, rusty key. Geoffrey quickly rushed to the old door and tried the rusty key in the lock. Unfortunately, the key failed to work. Geoffrey spent a long time twisting the key in the key hole, desperately trying to undo it.

Angrily, Geoffrey ran towards Ezzy, “Are you not going to help me? I can’t do this all by myself!”

“ What’s the point? We are trapped. We are never going to escape this cold, damp basement,” cried Ezzy in despair.

“Please try and help me. If we escape, I will give you a lifetime of treats,” pleaded Geoffrey using his best puppy dog eyes. Ezzy agreed to help Geoffrey but suggested that they get some sleep first.

Sleepily, Geoffrey stretched out his arms and lay down to get some sleep. As soon as he closed his eyes, he heard a knock on the heavy, wooden door. He carefully approached the door and put his ear to the wood. To his surprise, he heard Bella, his mechanical dog, slowly scratching at the door. Wearily, Bella barked, “ Hi guys, I really need you to help me. My mechanism desperately needs winding up.” Geoffrey, who was feeling very anxious, reached his hand under the door and delicately started to wind Bella up.

As soon as Bella felt full of energy, she opened her large jaws and a shiny, golden key dropped into Geoffrey’s outstretched hand. “The key is your way to freedom!”

Slow and steady, Geoffrey turned the shiny key in the rusty lock. For an awful second, he thought it wasn’t going to work. Thankfully, the lock quickly sprang open and the door creaked outwards, allowing Geoffrey and a very tired Ezzy, with Bella following close behind, to quietly sneak up the stairs and across the hallway towards the main entrance. As they reached the main door, they began to sprint. All three of them charged towards the forest, jumping over the tall, metal fence on their way.
