The Evacuee Letter Henry SWW
Dear Mother,
What an adventure: the sites we saw were awesome.
I do extremely appreciate the slice of carrot cake you bravely rationed up for me. Also, the cucumber sandwiches were delicious. My friends and I all loved the Humbugs you snuck in there; no one else had anything like it.
All the seats were crammed with three, or even four people on it. Suitcases were clutched, as the sticky air consumed my breath. Gas masks were grasped by sweaty hands, as the day outside grew into night. Everyone was really nervous, I bet you that every single boy and girl had a teddy bear buried at the bottom of their suitcases, ready for a hug later on.
When we finally got there, parents came to pick who they wanted. I was picked first, but I begged them that I would not go if they wouldn’t take little Jonny with me. Finally, they gave in, ordering us to get into the car. We didn’t even have time to ask them their names, they just sent us up to bed. All I know, is that the village we arrived at, is called Berkeley. Where we were staying, is a little cottage – named Apple Tree Cottage- that has 50 acres of land; sheep, chickens, and two dogs named Betsy, and Oak. Our suitcases were snapped shut, like a crocodile’s mouth. Early next morning, Me and Jonny went to collect the eggs. Mrs Jenner said we could even have scrambled eggs and sausages for breakfast, if we were lucky. Guess what. I never knew this, but the eggs we got from the coop were warm, the ones we get at home are cold. I love it here, so far, but I am missing you, loads. Hope to write to you again. Please write back.
Hope you keep well.
Love you loads. Lots of love, Henry
