Chapter 1

Chapter 1
It was a rainy morning in April. Rain poured into drains and mist smothered car windows. Street lights flickered on and off as water had seeped through the cracks in the glass.

Mika ignored the rain as a gust of wind swept through. He shivered and tugged at his coat clawing the zipper. It was nearly his turn.

“Next,” said the guard unenthusiastically, as he placed his hand on his head, Mika handed his pass to the guard. “Where are you headed?” questioned the guard. Mika didn’t answer at first but then saw the rage in the guard’s eyes. “Delivering shoes,” Mika replied, and held out the box. The guard inspected for a second but then gave a thumbs up to another guard who opened the gate. Mika stepped through. He was in.

Ten minutes later, Mika found himself walking through the streets of the upper town, where shop windows glistened, wide streets gave room and lights stayed on. People walking and chattering without a care in the world.

Then, all of a sudden, someone tugged him by the shoulder into a dark alleyway. “I’ll be having that,” he said casually. He pointed at the box Mika was delivering. “No!” shouted Mika and he ran further down the alleyway. He came to a solid brick wall and looked behind him. He saw the man coming closer…holding a knife!

Mika looked back at the brick wall which now had a wooden door. Mika, desperate to leave, grabbed the knob and swung the door shut behind him. Then when Mika looked behind him the door was gone.
