The islanders
Prologue
You’ve probably flown a skyship before. In summer you might have flown over fantastic forests, silent cities or even one of the everlasting oceans. You can feel the freedom running through you as you soar over the seven seas like the feeling of running free through fields and plains of tall grass and flowers that reach the top of your head. When you flew, there would be gales of wind where the warm breeze would be brushing in your face, the snow-covered mountains would be below you. You might have found an island to land and have a picnic, as the warm sand would run under you. That’s what summer is like on a skyship.
But travelling to different, unknown islands is another matter. You should try flying a skyship in the cold and chaos of a sea storm, whilst the wind blows furniture overboard and the rain and salt water floods the decks. Rumour has it that massive, menacing monkeys and terrifying tree-bears rule the islands and will pillage you and rip you apart without a second thought. I even heard that someone had an encounter with a rogue tree-bear and no-one has heard of him ever since.
Chapter 1
The crowd went silent as the skyship took off. Then the cheering started. Jayden smiled happily at his ship. Captain Carrots hopped up to Jayden’s arm. The rabbit twitched its ears in excitement. He always did this when Jayden or himself were happy. Timmy stood at the steering wheel. The ship flew away. They were off!
Jayden and Jonjo glared down at the snow-covered hills. Far below they could see goats running around. Suddenly, the scenery changed. Instead of seeing calming hills and fields, they were welcomed by thousands of fish below them and a friendly splash of water. They were above the vast ocean as fast as a tiger catches its prey. They heard fishers yelling and waves chopping. “ Someones angry,” Jayden said whilst half laughing.
“ Yeah you’re right,” Jonjo replied, a bit too loud.
“Hey quiet down, you don’t want to wake Captain Carrots, he goes completely chaotic if you wake him too early” said Jayden.
Waving hello to the fishers, Timmy said “We’ve reached full speed,” as the engine revved. Jayden cheered even though inside, his heart jolted forward.
Jayden walked up the stairs to the deck. He couldn’t sleep and there was no point in trying. On a night like this, he wanted to be awake. He felt a cold breeze followed by a shiver down his whole body. A wave of salty sea breeze brushed Jayden. The air felt different tonight. It was like they had found an island. In the distance he could smell the scent of grassland leaves. It was becoming day now and he could make out an island. They were there!
