Evacuee letter

Dear Ma,

Thank you for the gas mask you gave me, the second we left fog boundered the whole area. At long last, we finally arrived at Cambridge, unlike Bristol it is very placid and tranquil, with verdant hills and roses blossoming in the fields.

As we arrived, there was a huge crowd of parents waiting to choose from us. It was like we were at a market and the shoppers picked only the finest fruits. Time passed and slowly the children descended rapidly and I was the only one left. I gulped as the last family arrived, maybe it was because of my ripped shoes and my ragged clothes or that ghastly stench following me. I’m staying with a sweet old lady called Mrs Smith. As soon as we entered the house she changed me into some nice clothes and told me to wash myself outside in the rain. As I entered, there was sweet treats and a nice warm cup of hot cocoa on the table.

She showed me to my room on the top floor with a wonderful view of the farm.

During the night I hear the birds crowing, the winds passing by and the sound of  the rain droplets splashing down onto the deck. In the morning me and Mrs Smith go down to the farm and feed Zoe, her pet chicken. We also water and pick fruits for our lunch. It’s very quite around hear it would be rare to see cars and crowds of people, if you pause and listen you can hear the  luscious trees rustling in the country. I miss you and papa and I pray for you every night.

Mrs Smith dropped me off to a small school that was just up the road and I always keep my gas mask as you said to me multiple times. My teachers say to me that I have a brilliant mind and that my knowledge is exquisite.Today we had lunch outside, Mrs smith packed me some fish fingers. Me and my friends often trade lunches but you wouldn’t believe what some of them eat, Raw onion!! I know right, I tried a bite but as soon a it made contact with my mouth I spat it out in an instance!

I have made many friends and they enjoy talking to me. They have also taught me how to make a gas mask incase mine gets damaged. At playtime we play charades and blind man’s buff and the boys play tag and hide and seek.

I think about you and papa every day. I hope you’re ok please write to me as soon as possible.

Love,

Beatrice .
