Cog heart-Chapter 4

Chapter 4

`

Amelia dreamed. A voice whispered, she recognised it, but she couldn’t figure out who it belonged to. She was chasing the voice, reaching out for it. As the voice calmed it was more understandable. Her mothers. Amelia gazed around searching for her, she had last seen her when she was only five, but she still remembered her sweet smile. Her voice like fluffy clouds. She felt like a part of her was complete, a jigsaw puzzle , finished.

She woke up with a start. The morning light shone through the shattered glass. Amelia realised it was a dream. Ella was still dozing, but Stella was cleaning her ginger-bread coloured fur. She stopped, licking her now snow-white paw and stared at Amelia, her emerald green eyes shining. Amelia opened one of the card-board boxes in the corner, the brass key was hidden under piles of paper. Then glanced out of the shed window, to check nobody was coming, and woke up Ella. All three of them turned the key and swung open the door. ‘’By all the ticks and tocks, it’s time to get back what is rightfully yours.’’ Stella squicked, ‘’I saw the professor early this morning, they were getting their airship ready.

Seconds later, the gang of three not-so-known musketeers scrambled over the wall, near the shed, running towards the airship. The crackling fires screamed and the balloon filled rapidly. They watched as the professor carried a small wooden box, the right side for a locket to fit inside, on board and gently placed it in a case with a padlock.’’He really does not want anyone to get it,’’ Ella whispered. As the professor strode back to Manor House, Amelia mumbled, ‘’come on, this is our chance’’.

crawling across the grass, Ella searched for the nearest and easiest path to the ship, the children and the mechanimal just behind her. Although when they all arrived at the chest there was a code instead of a keyhole.’’How are we going to get the code?’’Stella protested. Amelia tried the date of when her father finished the spreadsheet. The padlock fell like a tower of cards. Inside was the macguffin with John Brown’s designs.

“Grab them, they are thieves, ‘ roared the professor, running towards the metal airship, tripping over his stained lab coat. Without thinking, Amelia pulled the long, trailing rope, releasing the ship from the ground, and tugged at the hook.

Straight away the airship took to the air, getting higher and higher. Below them the professor was shouting and shaking his fist. Tired and out of breath, he spluttered insults at the three, but by now they were so high, they could n’t hear what he was saying.

Just as they thought they were safe, muffled shouting and struggling echoed through the deck. As they searched the ship the sound got louder when they got closer to the cabin. John Brown sat there tied up with thick rope. Amelia leaped onto him and told their adventure so far.

‘Let’s go,’ he said, taking control and stearing the ship. ‘We will find someplace to land the ship and find a police station. I do not think he will be bothering us any more’’.

Amelia and Ella gazed at the world going by, houses were now like grains of rice, all the roads like pieces of string. Stella curled up at Amelias feet as she buttoned up her fur coat. A few odd snowflakes pirouetted in the sky and kissed her cheek. It was nearly Christmas and this one she would spend it with family and friends.

Cog heart – Chapter 1

Prologue

Stella gazed out of the transparent window of the Eagle. Her warm breath steamed it up, but still she could see the large, mechanical submarine edging closer, gliding through the water as if there was no effort. She saw it rise above the water, its cannons aiming towards the airship. Deep inside, the cannonballs were as big as bowling balls. She heard the muffled yelling from their enemies and the sizzling from the rope, burning about to let off the weapons. Stella smelt thick smoke filling the airship, as sharp as burning acid. Running to her master, Stella squeaked, “We have to get out of here, I’ll follow, jump!”.

Chapter 1

Nudging open the thick, heavy wooden door of Catherine Williams Academy for young girls, Amelia Brown studied the yard. Luckily, everyone was in morning lessons. She began to run across the tarmac playground, as fast as she could go, hoping to not be caught. She was arriving towards freedom, she would not be kept in captivity any longer. Amelia arrived at a huge brick wall, she whistled as a rope ladder, with leather foot holds swung over the wall. She landed with a thump on the other side, Stella greeting her like a playful puppy.

As she got her breath back she noticed a sign with bold lettering, which read: Heather Road. She reached for her bag, which was sitting on her waist, and pulled out a crumpled, brown envelope. Some of the words were smudged as it seemed to be fresh, but Amelia could still make sense of it. She read out the dreadful news; her father, John Brown, was missing and his airship was found destroyed in a nearby field. His last words were confusing, “Heather road”. She always wanted to figure out what this meant.

Stella gracefully slid around the tree, ‘are we going to go now?’ she asked, ‘I’m running out of power, could you give me a wind up?’ Amelia twisted the golden, engraved key. ‘ I used a lot of my energy pulling the rope ladder’.

The Upside Down Jellyfish

The Upside Down Jellyfish is an extremely rare species that is not very well known. Amazingly, the rare animal can survive in and out of water. Unusually, the Upside Down Jellyfish does not have a sting. Many scientists believed that it was extinct many years ago. Surprisingly, they made a comeback in 2009, by hiding in caves when it was mostly predators roaming the seas.

Although the Jellyfish likes to live near the top of the sea, the Upside down Jellyfish prefers the deep midnight layer. Strangely, the majority of the animals are spotted in the southern side of the island. Perhaps, this is because there is a wide range of seaweed species (including the most popular; singweed) for them to camouflage from predators, such as the denim back turtle.

When an adult Upside Down Jellyfish is fully stretched out it can be the size of your arm. They have 10 tentacles and are pastel blue or purple coloured. Interestingly, a group of them is called a bloom. Also, there are 5-6 of them in a bloom.

Unfortunately, they are at the brink of extinction. Despite what we are doing, the oceans are becoming more and more polluted.

Neverbelieve Island In Perilous Plight

It is hard to imagine such a kind community dying and being erased from memory. Sadly, the island is under immediate threat and without your help, the consequences could be catastrophic! Everything we know and love will be gone in a matter of months, even weeks.

Illegal poachers and loggers are going undercover as harmless visitors to disguise the law they are breaking. We have been collecting data so we understand how many animals are being taken away. Before there would have been around 30,000 species of animals, although now there are only 9,050. We can not accept this!

Over the past few days 600 trees have been cut down and just thrown out to sea. Infact, as you are reading this they are coming down.

An overuse of oil-fuelled turbo rockets has caused acid rain that is destroying the flowers and grasslands. It is crucial that we do not allow the Tuning Tulips to become devoured by diggers, being shipped from island to island. Firstly, it is vital to save them as they filter the air from pollution that may be drifting around. Secondly, the golden flower provides nutrients to many animals. Thirdly, they are one of the most common ingredients included in medicine. With these reasons you can understand how extremely important they are.

I urge you to join our fight to save this unique island. Take immediate steps and call our campaign line:

Tuning Tulip

Tuning Tulip

Tuning Tulips blossom as slowly as violins,

being carefully carpented in workshops,

Their shimmering roots curl in the soil,

like elegant ballerinas dancing,

The emerald stem shoot up,

like a flexible straw,

as green as a juicy watermelon,

Its leaves wave at passers going by.

The Tuning Tulips pollen is like music floating through a warm, summer’s breeze,

They are as small as a miniature mouse, and as golden as an Oscar award.
