Chapter 4

Mrs Smith runs up to them in tears, patting Ace’s head and taking him to care. Mrs Smith rushed to her medical cabinet, searching for bandages to cover the poor creature’s wounds. It took Ace a few days to recover, but James wouldn’t settle yet. He was eager to find the person who had caused his friends misery, and promised himself that he would avenge Ace. James questioned himself wondering if it was possible to find a specific person that had done this to his friend. He then got an idea. James then got the dart and made Ace sniff it so he could track the person who did this.

Ace got up and started running somewhere, James followed him and it took him to the same exact place where he got shot. James looked around for a sign, there was nothing to resemble the people who shot him left. As he went back he walked past his teacher’s house, and decided to go knock to check if he knew something about the people who had blasted their bullets towards Ace. When his teacher opened the door he was wearing a mask, James now got deja vu, and remembered that he saw someone who had a mask on when Ace got attacked. He quickly took off his mask and asked, “Greetings James,what brings you here?” James replied “I just came by and say hello Sir,” as he walked off. James took Ace home because he knew he couldn’t be left outside for now. He went to the forest for a walk and peered at his teacher. He stood there stunned, pinching himself to see if this was perhaps a nightmare, but it was reality. James saw his teacher holding a gun, the same that had shot his cuddly creature Ace.

His teacher came back but this time he was petting Ace, James checked to make sure he did not have a gun. James and his teacher talked and his teacher said, “I tried to kidnap him so I could sell to earn money. I wasn’t able to feed my family, it was the only choice I had.” This happened almost 20 years ago.The teacher passed away from cancer 10 years ago .Ace was killed by an unknown animal. James was sent to the war and came back with a Medal Of Honour.

As the day quickly passed by James checked the forest every day to see if Ace was okay. James had quickly memorised the whole path of the forest. James would still get lost in the busy cities but the forest was different. He had never been to the countryside but he was still able to learn the path to the forest where Ace was. James had just realised he liked the countryside more than the city. James looked around to find some food so he could feed Ace. Ace was a strong panther and James knew he was able to find food by himself.

Just before night, James would make his way deep into the forest to find Ace. James would then feed Ace and sit down with him, they both stared at the scattered moondust. James’s biggest fear was Ace’s death. One day, James was going to feed Ace when he heard some steps. James was scared to continue. What if someone shot Ace? What if someone killed him?

James continued as he kept on walking the steps got louder and louder .As James continued he found Ace lying on the ground, he quickly rushed to the creature and saw him unconscious. James looked around for clues, he saw a hunting dart next to his new buddy. Someone had shot him. James grabbed Ace and ran back home. A single tear dropped from his eye as more came along. When he got home he shouted, “Mrs Smith!”

James looked straight into the panther’s eyes. His eyes seemed to be burned in the endless fire.The fur was white like the fluffy doughy clouds.The panther took out his claws, they were as crescent as the quarter of the moon, sharp as a lion’s teeths .It’s whiskers curved like the edge of a football. The panther’s eyes closed sensing every move.

To James’s surprise the panther opened its mouth. Its teeth and sharp as a lion’s crawls, the panther approached James and put his paw on his hands. Mrs Smith said, “The panther likes you!” James could not help it but show a huge smile on his face.The panther then disappeared in the dark forest.

James turned around and saw the panther fade into the forest.  “It can be a tad bit spine-chilling the first time you meet him.” Whilst they were going back to the village James was on the lookout for food so he could give it to the panther. Whilst they continued walking James stopped. He felt someone watching him and he turned around but saw nothing.

“It’s just your imagination he can’t be watching us, he has gone further into the forest to look for food.” .”I found him a long time ago when his mother was still alive. He was just a cub then, one day I came to visit them and give them some food but only he was there. His mom had disappeared. I got the panther and put him somewhere safe. I then went to look for his mom but she had vanished. I accepted the thought of her being dead. Since then I have been raising him myself.” James decided to help Mrs Smith raise the panther because he knew she would not be able to do it all herself. “Promise me you will keep this as a secret. If someone finds out about this secret they will steal him and sell him. Having pets during this time it’s dangerous.” 

James did not sleep all night and decided to stare out the window to see if the panther would come back. Straight after James came back from school he went to the forest to look for the panther, he had found food for him. Everyday for 2 weeks Joseph would go into the forest to look for the panther. One night Joseph was looking out the window when he saw the panther come out of the forest.

When James opened the door the panther put his paws on James’s hand. The panther’s eyes were fully red now. James dropped a single tear of joy. It felt like the panther was talking to him. James then gave him some food and the panther went back to the forest. James decided to name him Ace (Ace was the name of James’s friend).

James did  not want to leave home.He sighed out of the window and stared across the muddy paths and sighed innocently.James lived with Mrs Smith,the room next to James’s room was Mrs Smith’s son’s room.Her  son had gone to France to fight for the war,everytime you mentioned her son she would start to cry.James was no fool and did not mention her son again.

James started going to  school 2 weeks after he left his home.James teacher was called Mr Johnson.He was a kind man.he later found out that James could not read or write,Mr Johnson helped him learn how to write and read.James sat at the back of the classon on  a wooden bench.he whole class sat on the same bench. James used to sit on the end of the bench.After school finished he ran home and helped Mrs Smith take the vegetables out of her garden.He spends most of the day in his room staring at the window and looking at the forest behind his home.

One night while James was looking out the window he saw Mrs Smith going into the forest and she  stayed there all night and came back just before James had to go to school.James got curious and stayed up all night staring out the window and trying to see what Mrs Smith does in the forest.James got so curious he decided to go  into  the forest to see what Mrs Smith  did in there.

Mrs Smith got  left the house and went to the forest, she did not know that James was behind her.James lost track of Mrs Smith and decided to continue going in the forest.He kept on walking.He managed to walk through the whole forest except one part..Just and he was going to that part he heard someone behind him.He turned around and saw Mrs Smith.  She asked  him,” what are you doing here” James ignored her and ran to the part he had not checked yet.He kept walking when he hit something with his feet he checked and it was just a rock.He kept walking and he then saw a door on the floor.He decided to open the door and he saw a panther about to jump on him.Mrs Smith whispered “That’s my pet,I still haven’t named him.”

James looked at the panther’s eye and it looked ready to attack him.James was too scared to say anything.He just stood there frozen.
