Shadow observed Alex. His eyes were deep orange and blazed like an ember of fire. His fur waved like the sea with every step, as dark as the void, as dark as the polluted night sky. Alex saw his claws as curved like a saber, as sharp as a tip of a sword. Wiry whiskers extended out, and stood like an old man’s beard. To Alex’s amazement, he opened his mouth. Ivory teeth curled, as savage as a poacher’s tricks. He prodded forwards, sniffed his hand with her candy floss-like tongue, rough as sandpaper and blood-hot, and licked his fingers. Alex was spellbinded.
“She likes you,” said Mrs Hill Alex couldn’t help but smile as Shadow disappeared into the bushes.Alex sensed that they were being watched, for a second he thought he saw the fiery eyes of the great cat. “She’ll be watching,” nodded Mrs Hill.”I found her a few years back. She was a cub then, starving. Someone must have set him loose, I reckon that the person who he was with fed him with the war going on. I took her in like a secret and nursed him back to health. He grew so fast! ”He’s our secret now, if someone knows they could shoot her if they saw. No one must know.”
That night Alex dreamed of the great cat. Shadow slinking through the great forest, eyes of fire piercing through the gloom. So it was that night, that Alex visited Shadow, taking any scraps he could find. Shadow would snatch it from his hand, he was shy because he would normally hurt himself, taking mice, voles, rabbits, hares, and even the big old deer himself.
One night, Shadow let Alex stroke his back. Within weeks, she would nuzzle his pockets for any scraps of meat if there were any, always making his low throaty rumble. And Alex changed. He no longer scowled and once his chores were done, he was off walking the village. Mrs Hill could hear Alex whistling or singing hymns he learned at school. Mrs Hill would say that keeping the secret of Shadow would bound them together.
