Spring came at last and Mary came to see Ruby every day after school. Mary had made a friend called Khloe. One day Khloe came over to play. As they were playing outside Khloe heard a snifferling sound. “What’s that sound?” said Khloe. “Nothing!” said Mary. But it was too late, Khloe was already behind the blackberry bush screaming in horror. Mary came running behind the bush, her heart pounding. The reason Khloe was screaming was because of Ruby’s’ beady, black eyes and blazing, red fur. “Get it away from me now!” screamed Khloe. When Mary had taken Ruby away from Khloe, Khloe said, “I’m going to tell everyone about today!” Mary’s brain was spinning in worry. She could not let this happen.
Mary’s Secret – chapter 2
Every night Mary and Mrs Bird went to see Ruby. Ruby was always waiting for them behind the blackberry bush. Mary could not take her eyes off her. Ruby’s blazing red fur hurt Mary’s eyes if she looked at it for too long. The fox’s piercing black eyes hit Mary and sent a shiver down her spine. Ruby’s bushy tail tickled Mary’s nose and neck.
She remembered a time when someone had nearly found Ruby. She was playing with the fox when she heard someone whistling. She sprinted behind the blackberry bush with Ruby following her. She had stayed behind the bush until she was certain the whistling had gone by.
Ruby was her secret. She would never tell anyone.
The Secret
Chapter 1
The Secret
Sophie Sphere had always dreamed of escape. She stood in the middle of her new room and sighed contentedly. The room she was sharing with her best friend, Maryjane, was beautiful. It had soft silky beds and trees painted on the walls. It was the kind of place that she had always dreamed of. The man she was staying with was also an improvement on her real parents. For one thing, he wasn’t strict about clothes or manners. He just sort of got on with things in a quiet way. The one thing he got cross about is when people asked him about his wooden legs. The only thing Sophie really missed was her faithful dog, Prince. She got him as a puppy when she was born, and they had been inseparable ever since.
Sophie had never liked school. But this was different; different from the long maths classes, different from the weeks of reading boring books to her mother. In these classes they learnt the most unusual things, like biology and science and best of all Galic. She was told that they learn Galic because many of the families in the area speak it and it might come in handy. Mr Bathwick (the man Sophie stays with) teaches the whole school and, from Sophies point of view, was amazing. He had a way of explaining that makes it sounds much easier and funnier.
Soon after she arrived, Sophie began to find a routine in the beauty of her new life. She would spend the mornings exploring the house and reading the novels that she found there, the afternoons were spent gardening in Jim’s garden, and the rest of the day was spent in her favourite place in the world… school! However, the weekends were the best because she and her two friends, Maryjane and Elizabeth, would go down to the beautiful river and, as summer approached and the weather warmed up, they would swim! The water cooled them down considerably in the ever-rising heat.
Every night, while Jim thought that they were in bed, Maryjane and Sophie would watch the stars and name the consolations. Their favourite was Orion, the brave hunter. Every evening at 10pm they saw a shadowy figure leave the house and disappear into the mysterious old school building, known as the soup kitchen. What was he doing when it had been boarded up for years? Why was he leaving so late at night?
Sophie didn’t have to wait long to find out. One evening in late May Jim asked her to follow him, and he led her to the old falling down soup kitchen. She followed behind, quietly skipping for joy. Sophie had always dreamed of having an adventure.
It was dark. So dark in fact that Jim had to bring his torch, which was never used when he went out. The old piles of cobblestones and rooftiles took the shape of ominous trolls in the gloomy light and seemed to jump out at Sophie. She hurried after Jim.
He stooped by the door and paused. ’Sophie, you can’t tell anyone, and you mustn’t scream,’’ he muttered and then he pulled open the door. It was dark and all she could smell was deer meat and she gaged. One bright blue eye peered at her out of the darkness and suddenly she saw a white body with beautiful black spots appear. Jim explained that she was a snow leopard, and he had found her when his legs were blown off in the Great War. She was presumably being smuggled, and her owner had been killed in the bombing raid.
Mary’s Secret
Mary Jones stared out of her window as the moon shone into her room. She hated it in the country. Why had her mum sent her here? She could have stayed safe from the bombs. Just then she saw a flicker of light. It was her Aunty Bertha. Mary pulled on her dressing gown and boots and ran outside. Just then her Aunt called out “Ruby”.
A moment later she heard a snifferling sound and out came a red fox. “I know you’re there Mary” said Aunt Bertha. Mary came out, embarrassed. “This is Ruby the Red Fox” said Bertha.
Dear Ma
Dear Ma,
I am living with someone called Mrs Bird and she is very kind to me. The best thing was when we arrived Mrs Bird gave me a small piece of fruit cake and a hot cup of cocoa. Every breakfast time we have one boiled egg and some bread and butter.
The country is so different, not like the city. The fields just go on and on. When I am in bed I hear owls hooting. My room is up in a small attic. There is a small candle on a little wooden table. I see a lot of baby lambs so me and my friend play with them. My friend is called Donna and she lives down the country lane.
Missing you,
Love Mary xxx
Happiness
Happiness
My happiness is made from-
the bright yellow petal of a golden daffodil
the sugary sweetness of a doughnut
the soft fur of a Guinea pig
and the sapphire waves crashing
against the shore
I found it –
at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean
lying in a robin’s feathery nest
sleeping in a bed of roses
shining above the glittering moon
sitting in a Catherine wheel about
to set off .
This happiness can –
change the world
stop children fighting
make wars cease
eat away anger
cause sadness to smile.
If I lost this happiness-
I would cry till I die.
Floor-stubble
Floor-stubble
A carpet is
as rough and worn as a shark’s skin,
like a bristly beard.
Floor-stubble.
A bird is
as light as floating mist,
like a floating feather.
Flying-orchestra.
A jumper is
as warm as molten rock,
like a second sun.
Cosy-warmth.
A pair of curtains are
as blocking as a wall,
like iron blinds.
Black-block.
The Ship of Dreams
The Ship of Dreams
A silver sail on the horizon greets the darkening sky and a misty mast grows closer. Under the water an invisible oar flashes in and out of view, shocking the turtles and sharks deep down below. A face as pale as the grave appears at a porthole for a moment but a minute later only a candle is left behind. As the ship grows nearer to the rock and the ghostly silence is shattered by a hooded sailor`s cry of ‘all hands-on deck’ as the other gliding hooded figures swarm the deck, manning the oars like never before.
For it was time for the ship of dreams to begin work.
The Ship of Happiness
On the ship of happiness, the blue, shining waves crash upon the sides of the big ship.
On the ship of happiness, the great sails flutter like butterflies on the breeze.
On the ship of happiness, the wooden oars glide through the emerald sea.
On the ship of happiness, the portholes glow like lanterns from inside the ship.
