The Horsamander

Prologue

You’ve probably been to Moody Bay. Although, you would’ve been in summer, when the sign read ‘Beachy Bay’. You most likely paddled in the sea with your siblings, ate bubblegum ice-cream; built sand castles; and hid your fish and chips from the seagulls. You even went to Beachy Street Restaurant for tea. Remember?

But in winter, you went home and forgot all about your holiday. And little did you know, the sign changed whilst you were fast asleep in the car. Moody Bay became deserted… the locals stayed away and tourists packed their bags. Fog traveled up the streets like a vast, ghostly tentacle. Some people even say they hear echoes of clip-clops when they pass the seaside.

In summer, everyone’s outside, soaking up the sun. Just like you did seven years ago. People chill under parasols and skip along the pier, singing joyful songs. Many people come: children with buckets and spades, parents peacefully reading books; elderly people knitting in the shade; and dogs barking at the waves.

Chapter One

My name is Georgie Raunt, but most people call me George, except from Miss Alicio. Miss Alicio is the owner of Beachy Street Restaurant – where I work. I’m only twelve, so I don’t really have a proper job. All I do is clean the dishes and serve food. I guess you could call me the cleaner, or the waiter. Beachy Street is right next to the beach, which means I can paddle in the sea whenever its not my shift.

Funny story about the beach: I was found on the beach, at exactly 11:09 pm. What’s significant about this time, I am unsure. According to Miss Alicio, I was only about three months old. She took me to the flat above the restaurant and laid me in a cot. From then on, I’ve lived with Miss Alicio and now she’s like a mother to me.

I’m looking around and notice a girl at the top of the stairs.

She says, “Open the door!”

I’m staring at her.. what would Miss Alicio think if I was letting random girls into my room?

“Do you want them to find me?” The girl was tapping on the glass as if I was a monkey at a zoo, “I said let me in!”

I open the door and it creaks…

Before I continue with the story, there’s a legend about our town that I should tell you. It happened many years ago (twelve to be precise) beginning at 11:09pm. Mr Bury, the book shop owner, says he heard the sound of hooves trotting through the street. He looked behind him and saw the swish of a part-transparent horse tail. It’s been given the name: Horsamander. But, some say it’s all fake and was just a dream. Others say they can hear it every night. I know it only appears in dark, foggy weather, so that surely can’t be right. Although, I have never seen or heard it myself.

Locals say you can smell a whiff of rotten hay when there’s a stormy sea mist floating around. They say the clip – clop is just the rumble of the wind knocking things over. I believe it though. I know it must be real. It’s the only interesting thing about this boring town.

“What do you mean they’ll find you!?”

I back away to the other end of my room, her green siren eyes glaring at me. Her luscious locks moving in the breeze coming through the open door. She spins around and slams the door shut.

“They’re here!” She exclaims.

“Uhm, here! Hide in the wardrobe.”

Chapter 2

This girl appears to have seen the-the Horsamander. She’s still hiding in the wardrobe. I’m looking out the window… there’s nothing there apart from a deathly sea mist. I walk over to open the door and the mysterious girl speaks, “Is it gone?”

The light flickers, but the sort of flicker when a shadow passes the light. She screams.

“Look, err whatever your name is, we need to find the creature you saw. Now,” I tell her.

“It’s Everie,” She smiles. Creeping towards the door, I open it. Except it didn’t creak like it normally does. Anyways, no time for doors that don’t creak.

Me and my strange friend, Everie, are walking towards the pier; the wet air dampening our clothes. We reach the pier. A green jet of light just flashed my eyes.

“Did you see that?” I’m calling out to her. She continues to walk forwards as if a siren was calling her. I don’t understand: she was just petrified after seeing the Horsamander and now she could be walking right into it’s trap!

“Huh? Did you say something?” Everie finally replies. I’m staring at her. She gestures me to walk on, but I’m rooted to the spot. How is she so brave? At that moment, distant sounds of hooves on cobblestone were edging towards us. I’m feeling the cold breeze that is described in books about the Horsamander…the signs that it is near.

I’m running to Everie – she clearly doesn’t know what’s about to happen. We hear the choppy waves behind us, the clip-clops getting closer and screams that sound very alike to neighs. “Run!” I’m screaming. She spins around and so do I, but to our horror we see the mander standing in front of us…

It rears up on the spot and makes a siren call, showing it’s pristine white fangs. Everie says something, but I can’t hear her over the crashing waves. It was like she was in control of the monster: it disappears into the Moody Sea to her command. I stare at Everie, wondering who I decided to become friends with.

“Lets go. Before it comes back.” I’m telling her. And we walk back, my eyes full of fear, but Everie’s intriguing.

An Adventure In Chorley

On Monday, I found a pigeon’s feather,

lying on the path,

abandoned and alone,

until the wind carries it away.

On Tuesday, I walked to Healey Nab,

running up the hill,

desperate for an adventure,

like an unknown explorer.

On Wednesday, I saw ducks swimming in the canal,

ripples of water following behind,

quacking for food in the pockets of passers by.

On Thursday, I touched the trunk of an oak tree,

swaying in the wind,

like a creaky old door.

On Friday, I tasted the creamy vanilla ice cream,

that comes from Fredericks shop,

the speckles of black staining my tongue.

On Saturday, I hear the sound of birds chirping their wake up song,

flying past my window,

looking for food to feed their young.

On Sunday, I dreamed of the past week,

I lay in my bed,

smiling to myself,
realising how good it truly was.

MIA

The Teacher By Mia

As soon as joyful Miss Tulip bounced into class seven, the familiar room appeared to turn jubilant. She was small with an enthusiastic smile rather like a fluffy bunny rabbit. “Settle down children,” Miss Tulip said cheerfully, “It’s time to learn!”

Dear diary,

Dear diary,

This morning, I sent out my crew to search the  local grounds,

To find my missing friend. I asked some locals if they had seen him and I also put up some notices about his height, eye colour and name. I then went off to tag along with my crew working hard to try and find clues of where he could have vanished to.

First, me and my crew made our way further and further from the edge of the rainforest making our way into the middle. I placed various markings on rocks and in the dirt so that we would make our way back out alive. The forest was creeping with insects. Bolts of light made cracks in the trees’ shadows breaking the darkness. One moment there would be complete emptiness and next, the forest’s trees seemed like they were hotels of  birds and parrots.

After a while, we came to a glaze where there was an opening to a cave. Outside, there was a huge patch of teeth marks carved by teeth on the  entrance of the cave. Inside it was light except from the deep dark corners at the back of the cave.

We stood having a conversation about what to do. Some of us felt as if ermatige had met his end.B As we stood we all heard a rush of wind and the clapping of wings  clapping like hands applauding we all spun round to see a beautiful elegant dragon. It looked at me with terror as if it was scared.

Luckily, it was an ice dragon with flames of blue. These kind creatures have silky skin that reflects in cold water. It breathes in a low calm tone and it also speaks like that. It asked if it could help so we explained our predicament to her and she said she hadn’t  seen the sky ship or hermitage. With a splash of cold water  the dragon warned us that she had seen a swarm of sky goblins heading our way. Without hesitation we headed back to our sky ship…

Dear captain

Dear captain harriett culpepper,

I Am writing to apply for a job on the Aurora sky ship as a member of the crew for your first journey in five years.I hope that you have a spot on the team for a young, alive sky ship traveler who will bring happiness on every deck and assist you on your journey.

First, my main strength is navigating sky ships. As a result of this I can navigate the ship during cold nights when the captain is sick or on his day off. I can get us to our destination.

Secondly, I am very accomplished in skyscraper climbing and did well in my SATS 4 years ago. As a result of these accomplishments I can help out with all the complicated things like fixing the ship and helping passengers who fell off the ship.

Moreover, I am very skilled at writing, communication and project management. With these skills I can communicate with everyone aboard perfectly well and write our rules and policies.

Finally, I am sure that Edoura vein is up to no good so me and arthur have ensured ourselves that we will keep a close eye on him. This may help lift some weight off your shoulders.

Please consider me for a place on your team.

Yours sincerely Mia-Rose

super letter

Dear guardians of the galaxy,

I am writing this letter  to persuade you to go on  a vacation.

My first point is that you work so hard not only to protect one planet, a whole galaxy, I bet your bones ache wherever you go secondly, because you need to rest from the grand unifier raker battle. And because you’re not resting enough it could become a major health issue  like broken bones and even illness like ear infections and throat infections from all this smoke. I think you all deserve better. Isn’t it  always you who  gets there first?  Haven’t you considered a vacation  haven’t you noticed how all the villains of the galaxy target you? I don’t think that it is fair and I think you should go somewhere on a holiday. Imagine all the  relaxing and resting youm could do.

Also, I am concerned because last time I checked you hadn’t gone to one of your health checkups in the last year and a half. Last year wasn’t half as bad as this year, and you might be able to win a fight but not without getting hurt, let alone injuries.you did so well in prison but not so well out.

To build on my concern I would like to point out that no villains have attacked for a long time  so it seems you have the time  and plus there are lots of benefits like you’ll be relaxed , calm, happy, and energized.

My concern is that you won’t be able to do this when you get older.

Have you sat back and thought about how bad it would be if you were to get seriously injured and had to put an end to your career. I think it is  bad that you have been taking greater risks and putting yourself in danger.

Therefore why not have a week’s rest and go out to the sunny cities to chill and have fun.

Your sincerely

Superwoman
