How to look after a baby Phoenix

How to look after a baby Phoenix
First, make sure when handling your baby Phoenix you are wearing gloves so you do not get burnt by it’s flames.

Next, keep your Phoenix in an inclosed space where it cannot burn your belongings, for bedding, consider mineral wool.

During the day, make sure your Phoenix is kept well hydrated to prevent overheating, in case of this, simply coat your Phoenix in ice cold water until the flames die down.

Before bed, it is encouraged to close all windows and doors in your house to prevent your Phoenix getting too cold, as this can make them very ill.

If you want to take your Phoenix for a walk, a non flammable material is required for a lead, never let your phoenix run free because they have a tendency to burn down trees.

For a very well behaved phoenix, try brushing its feathers twice a day as they like to be well groomed. This will also make it more used to you as you are in such close contact to it.

A letter from Eden

Dear Mama, I will never forget the day I left when I walked up to the train platform clutching my small suitcase and a parcel of food for the journey. A grey haze filled the station as we bustled through the crowds, past other mothers and other children. Some were crying whilst others clutching tight to one another as if they could never bear to let go. A whistle blared in the distance as children were gathered onto the trains. I remember looking back to see you waving. I waved too, before a wave of tears washed over me. I couldn’t stop, but then as soon as I blinked, the train was out of the station and you were out of sight. When the train pulled into Hawkshead station, I stepped out with some of the other children. We found ourselves put into a single file line and lead to a large building. We stayed in this strange building until an adult came and chose us to stay with them. After the second day, I was chosen by an elderly man named Mr Burton, who lived in quite a large house just
outside the village. He already had three other children in his care – Thomas, Harriet and George. Thomas and George are nice enough but Harriet is incredibly annoying. When I told her my name, she laughed and said it was a stupid name. I know it cannot possibly be stupid as you came up with it and you would not give me a stupid name. Hawkshead is a nice village and there’s plenty to explore although I always have to finish my jobs until I’m allowed to go exploring. Every day I wake up at six sharp and boil the kettle, then I feed the chickens and Aggie the pig. After that, I get George ready. He’s only three but he’s very well behaved – probably better than me! Then we all have breakfast, me, Georgie, Thomas, Harriet and Mr Burton. We’re free to do whatever we want after we’ve finished our jobs, so long as we don’t make any trouble. I usually take Georgie to the fields to see the sheep. Oh Mama – there are so many different animals – so many I’ve lost count. There are the sheep, horses and cows in the fields, chickens and pigs, and any number of birds! Oh those lovely birds, swallows and sparrows, magpies and ******** and at night there are owls! I love owls, with their beautiful feathers and their huge eyes. I don’t know what Harriet does but Thomas usually joins us in the fields and carves small logs of wood with his pocket knife. He’s really good at it too. Georgie likes to feed the sheep while a sit in this huge oak tree that towers over the stream and the hills. I can almost climb to the top now Mama and Thomas and I are going to try and make a treehouse in it this Summer. We’ve already got enough wood and I found some rope in a cupboard. I do miss you Mama, and I miss home, but I seem to be settling down here. I hope you and Papa are okay. You will write back won’t you? I will write back soon- hopefully when Harriet hasn’t stolen my pen.

With love from,
Your Eden.

The Shadow

Dear Diary,
I know I don’t really like writing in this thing, but somethings just have to be shared, even if it’s just to a scrappy little notebook.

A few weeks ago, I was awake, sitting by my bedroom window, staring out onto the waters of Porthledden Cove. I love the cove, and so did Ruffus, my border collie puppy. His favourite thing to do is run down to the cliffs and beach, and roll around like a fish in the water, then afterwards, he shakes himself dry, getting me all wet. I stared at the beautiful crashing waves, the twinkling stars, the rough sands. Then suddenly, Ruffus came barging downstairs, through the hallway, and out the front door! I hadn’t realised Dad had forgotten to lock it. Without a moment to lose, I started chasing Ruffus, all the way down to the cove, where he finally stopped before running into the water like a maniac.

I decided, it wasn’t worth it to try and get him out, he would come soon. Instead I sat down on the scratchy, pale sands and stared upwards as clouds gathered overhead. Rain was coming. I leaned my head back, though it was slightly uncomfortable sitting there in flannel pyjamas. As a sat there, I heard the gentle crashing sound of waves slapping against the cliff side. I must have sat there for half an hour before I suddenly heard the sound of Ruffus barking madly, as if he was trying to warn me about something. I sat up, wondering what was wrong, when suddenly I saw something in the corner of my eye. Ruffus came rushing up to me and jumped into my lap, soaking wet and shivering. I looked again, and saw….. a bright pair of great, yellow eyes, staring at me menacingly from just beneath the waters surface.

I sat there, frightened out of my wits. I thought it must have been a trick of the light, a piece of seaweed maybe, or maybe a bright fish? I couldn’t see well. It was so dark. I could only see shapes. Then, the eyes started rising up, slowly, sloooowly, until it was a dark, frightening shadow, glaring at me with it’s putrid eyes. I stared back, hardly able to move. I was so scared. Then somewhere nearby, lightning struck, illuminating the figure for a fleeting moment. It was a mermaid, but not the ones I’d heard of in fairytales. Those mermaids were pretty, with gorgeous voices and long flowing hair down to their sparkling tails. This one had greyish, slimy skin, razor sharp teeth, gills, and long, pointy nails and ears with pale ringlets of hair stuck around it’s head like spiders webs.

I was frozen in fear, dreading what was going to happen next, sure it was going to drag me into the water and drown me. Until again, lightning struck, and the creature was gone.

I don’t know how to tell anyone else what I saw that night, and even if I did, who would believe me? I still see that creature in my nightmares, stalking me in the middle of the night, ready to end me in a fleeting moment. I hope I can trust this book to hold my secrets, as I feel I am not ready to tell them.

Until next time,
Lileas Ainsley

The Beauty Within Our City

It doesn’t have to be the Preston lilacs, blooming beautiful colours of purple, pink and white,
Or the crisp golden leaves of Cuerden Valley, as it prepares for the cold,
Or the glistening waters of the River Ribble, filling the air with its relaxing sound.

It could be a fluffy white sheep, grazing in a summer green field,
Or a little grey squirrel scampering up a hazel tree, fuzzy tail raised high,
Or a simple Rowan tree, strong and protective, with blood red berries hanging from the thin branches, bursting with colour.

It could only be the simple things,
That make a life complete,
A walk in the park, a hug with a friend,
If only you would see.

Days of the week in Preston

On Monday, I walked along the Preston Docks, looking out onto the glittering waters, with boats bobbing up and down, reflected in the evening sun.

On Tuesday, I heard Blackbirds singing sweetly from the sweet-smelling honeysuckle shrubs, from which they call home.

On Wednesday, I walked past the tall terraced houses, white houses, grey houses, bright pink and yellow houses all lined up in a neat row.

On Thursday, I smelled the delicious savoury smell of butter pie, a delicious creamy, potatoey, buttery smell, that filled the air and made you think of home.

On Friday, I heard the squeals of delight from the great white football stadium, squeals as if the most delightful thing had just occurred, making everyone happy.

On Saturday, I saw fluffy white sheep grazing in the green fields, like clouds that had stopped suddenly for a moment, as they ate contently.

On Sunday, I visited Preston City Centre, with people bustling past, trying to break through the crowd like it was a wall of people, all trying to get past.

Eclipse Dragons by Rowan

Should we capture Eclipse Dragons?

There has been a recent discussion about if we should let Eclipse Dragons be captured or if we should leave them be. This is currently a hot topic because many more Eclipse dragons have been sighted than usual.

Some people say that during the scarce amount of eclipses there are, all Eclipse Dragons go crazy, attacking everything they see. They are also enemies with a friendly breed; the Poison Bubble Dragon.

Furthermore, their weaponised body can be extremely dangerous, despite being for self-defence. Overall, about half of the population say they should be captured.

On the other hand, Eclipse Dragons are very loyal after tamed and will always provide you self defence. Additionally, the local Authorities are trying to make a (hard worked) behaviour chart for the dragons. These dragons are also really strong and will stop any attacks with ease.

Having listened to both sides, I have decided we should let these dragons live with us. One of the main reasons for my decision was the loyalty of these creatures.

Life on Earth by Rowan

You are a snake slithering slowly on the scorching Sahara sand, striking at a squeaking spinifex hopping mouse scurrying to the sea.

You are a creeping crab, crawling across the seas crusty coral, scurrying away from the cavernous jaws of a cruel and cold-blooded great white shark, onto the crystal shores of a tropical rainforest.

You are a predatory panther perching in lush green rainforest trees, watching a wailing howler monkey for the right moment to pounce. The pounding heart of the monkey tells the panther to pounce; the monkey swings off into the base of a towering mountain.

You are a deadly wolf wailing for its pack; a wandering arctic hare is hopping nearby and you wait to strike, you chase the hare up the mountain towards your pack, playing at the summit of the frozen-over mountain.
