Chapter 1   Ready To Leave

Finally, they were ready to leave.

That afternoon a message arrived with Flame, a pigeon carrier, noting that the Gawm had arrived in numbers, and were ready to attack at any moment. It was only a matter of time. Rocky, Thiago and Annie were the last to fined out the terrible news, they would have to leave Steep Water Warren. They were all kits of the chieftain who had to go to defend his burrow. For what seemed like hours, but was actually only minutes the three kits had to flee their Warren for safety. Their mother couldn’t go, as she had to look after the rabbits that had been injured due to the horrific Gawm. To be totally escaped they would have to trudge through the green, gloomy forest Limb, through the Snow, Rock Mountains down towards Stock Pawt, across the Cyan Sea and all the way to the Old Oak.

Finally they had left and were ready to endure the terrifying journey. They stumbled through the dead carcasses, burning houses and away from the horror. Smoke smothered the sky and choked the young kits. Fire was the only thing they could smell. Screaming and shouting echoed round the Warren.

“Run, run and don’t look back! only come back when you get my message.” They were the final words they heard from their mother. These words echoed through the ears of three kits.  The eldest kit Rocky couldn’t stop thinking about his dad and what he would do if he died. Rocky, Thiago and Annie did as they were told and fled all the way to green gloom forest. They could never be safe until they made it to the Old Oak, even the Gawm could break those Impenetrable walls.

They had made in the nick of time. The dark had started to roll in so the young kits started to create a shelter for the night. “Perfect” explained a delighted Rocky; he had collected the sticks, Annie had patched up the holes with moss and Thiago had been making sure the food was edible, by eating most of it. The forest was damp and scary. The only thing that was good was that the trees towered overhead casting shadows that danced along the ground. Tomorrow they would have to continue their treacherous journey all the way up to the Snow Rock Mountains. Will that make it all the way to the Snow Rock Mountains, and if they do, will it be too late?
