When the rain falls

When the rain falls..

Cordelia Sparrow, a young evacuee. She had definitely not wanted to leave home. She glared out the bottom window, she had come to live in a small area, with only few people. To her luck, she had just missed traffic. It was also quite busy round there. The room smelt like damp coal, as it was Mrs. Starks, sons room. He had left to go to war, you couldn’t talk about it to her, she would burst into tears.

Her first school day came and went. The teacher was strict and sometimes nice, his name was Mr. Southworth. He soon found out that Cordelia was the neatest writer, she could also read beautifully. She sat in the middle row of a small group of children. Cordelia’s work looked amazing, she had formed her letters proudly, everyone, including Mr. Southworth, gave her compliments. When the time came, the bell rang and she gracefully skipped out the door.

The weeks flew past; Cordelia had produced a routine. First she would get ready, go to school, come back from school and help Mrs. Starks with the farming work and gardening, have her tea and then go to bed. She locked the chicken pen at night and then checked if there was any eggs to be collected in the morning, she would also lock up the pig pen and watch them roll around in the mud, she found it oddly fascinating. Soon enough, winter had left and it came to spring, the flowers bloomed in the sunlight.

Last thing at night, Cordelia slowly stepped to the window. She looked out looking at the dull sky and the sun rose down as slow as a snail. She had noticed Mrs. Starks goes into the woods every night, carrying a lantern. It was the smallest woods of the village. She watched from the window, eyes glued on the glowing light. Where was she going? Why does she go into the woods every night?

Cordelia didn’t wait that long to find out. On a sunny day late at night, when the flowers were blooming, Mrs. Starks asked Cordelia to follow her. She was ready to now show Mrs. Starks that she was now enjoying her new life.

The moon shone down and the golden stars glimmered. It was quite dark and light, but Cordelia was fearless, so she didn’t mind. She strolled along the cobblestone path wondering what is going to happen.

They stopped at a thick branch of leaves, Cordelia could smell the fresh farm smell when she collects the eggs from the chickens. Mr. Starks moved the branch of leaves and Cordelia saw the most unimaginable thing.. The chicken came out to greet Mrs. Starks. The chickens gold shimmered in the moon light. It was a golden chicken! “Meet Steve,” Mrs. Starks whispered, “I found him in the woods with a broken leg..”

Cordelia smiled with joy growing inside her.
