When Darkness falls by Bella SWW
Josephine Hannock stared out of the window. “What am I doing here?” she thought. “Mum and dad are pretty much risking their lives in London and here I am hiding away in the country like a brattish princess”. Even though she felt that way, Josephine knew she had better things to do rather than sit by the attic window and sulk when the sun was blazing and bluebells were blooming in the slowly producing spring. She got up and went out into the garden, she led down and took in the warm air, the soft grass and the fresh smelling flowers. She read her book and suddenly found herself drifting off to sleep.
“Wake up Josephine, WAKE UP, you have to go to school in a minute, remember? School is this afternoon, unlike how it is in London” said Mrs Green softly. Josephine woke up. She hated school, and the fact she had too go in the afternoon was worse because all of her friends went in the morning, and as for her, she was with the bullies. A walk to school was about half an hour, not including the long wait for traffic, just to cross the road. Then, school would come and go, and Mr Jones as strict as ever. Though at long last Josephine would come back to Mrs Green’s house, to have a nice meal.
At Mrs Greens cottage, Josephine had many things to do: like reading the many books Mrs Green kept for her in the attic, playing outside with friends in the village, having races with Mosley (Mrs Green’s whippet) or better looking after and riding the horse called Bertie Mrs Green bought for her. Bertie was a beautiful chestnut gelding , he was not very tall but Josephine believed he was the safest pony on earth. All of the children at school thought she was weird because Josephine liked chores so much but she thought they were weird for hating them. Though there is always something that troubles you, still, when you have settled down, and Josephine had one.
Every night, Josephine would look out of the attic window to see a lantern. By first glance, she knew perfectly well who it was, she had seen the lantern before and she could just see their face by the light of the lantern. It was Mrs Green. Then Mrs green would just disappear into the darkness of the Darkling woods. Every night, Josephine longed to see what Mrs Green was hiding beneath the darkness of the trees. Although she did not know how soon it would be till she finds out.
One night Mrs Green said “Follow me,” so Josephine did, trying not to think about what was happening and where she was going. Until she stepped into the Darkling woods. She suddenly knew what was going on, there was a very likely chance that she would see what Mrs Green had been hiding from her for all those weeks. As they stepped further into the woods Josephine heard something, it was hard to make out because it was interrupted by the sound of a goose, but she thought she could “Mrs Green, Mrs Green, das sind Sie”. If Josephine ears were not mistaken, that was German.
“What was Mrs Green doing?” Josephine thought, “Letting a German into our country, is she a German? Surely not”. “Wo sind Sie?” said the voice. Then they got there. There stood a young boy about her age, his clothes were ragged and he was disturbingly skinny. “Wer bist du?” he said, looking at me. I did not answer, “ich bin Tobias und das ist Ursula” he said pointing at him then the goose next to him that she had not noticed. Her eyes widened, it was the most beautiful goose she had ever seen. It was an Egyptian goose, but the bad thing was, both of them were not allowed in England. “I shall explain when we get home,” said Mrs Green.
