Chapter 4 when the sky falls

Chapter 4

It was finally daytime. Sava yawned, and when she opened her eyes,  to her shock, she woke in a room 3 times the size of her last one. She lived in a new home, had a new guardian and started a new life. The room was like a house itself, only so pink that made Sava’s eyes water. That was not what she dreamed. Poor Miss Backstick was stuck in prison, probably forced to eat rubbish. She got up, went downstairs to see the rest of the luxurious mansion where she met a lady. A very posh and elegant lady. She had curly, golden locks  with a long, white  dress. And to top it off, a small beret drowning in her puffy hair .

“Ugh,you must be my daughter. My name is Miss Lee. Look at your dress,it’s so brown…so ugly!” she declared in disgust .

Suddenly she clapped her hands twice and a maid grabbed Sava by the shoulder. She screamed but no one twitched. Throughout the day,she was trained how to ride a horse. Dawn finally set  and it was time for Sava to escape and save her loved ones. She only met this woman in a minute and already had the nerves because of her. She packed all sorts of what she’d need. Candles, food, clothes, horse food(for her horse she was given) and money. She learnt how to blackmail. Off she went with her hazel horse,on a mission that depended on her life. Luckily she had a quick brain and was used to riding already. The rain showered the fields, flooded holes and soaked her to the bone. The prison was much further away than she thought. Days passed and more people started noticing her disappearance.  Posters were stuck on buildings and reached the news. The day that she found her was so dark, she almost decided to give up. She took her last turn and to her surprise, saw the prison.Without concerns  she hid her horse and stepped in the building, turning left and right, making sure she wasn’t followed and alone. She then entered a  ghostly corridor . There she was! Miss Backstick looked as thin as ever, skinnier than before. It was too obvious she was very mistreated for days. Sh been put in a solo celler where guards were in every corner examining her every move. Sava managed to distract them all by getting in touch with a guy who takes care of the emergency calls. In return, she gave them her  money. All she had to do was fake an emergency somewhere far away.

“Psst,Mrs Backstick, I’m here,”Sava whispered.

Miss Backstick looked around, as if   she was going to faint.  She looked really lost. She, again, looked around and Sava caught her eye that lit up a spark of hope in her. She started banging on the bars so hard her hand morphed to the color rose red trying to get to the girl.

“Oh you brave  destined girl!Come on,free me and let’s go as far God shall let us!” she declared,as she squeezed her cheek.

She rushed to get the keys with her sweaty hands, her heart thumping loudly every millisecond. The woman stepped outside the dungeon and hugged her hard. She held her hand and they ran. They hopped on the horse and escaped from torture hoping to find freedom.

After the long runaway, the 2 rebels ended up in the deserted woods. All of the country’s enemies appeared each night but when the news of Miss Backstick’s crime spread,no one dared to step foot on that woodland. So they were safe…for now.

“How are we going to live here?! I got some food that will last for 3 days and we can’t hide forever. What about the horse?”She asked,so panic-struck that she pulled the dead grass over and over again.

“Everything is going to be fine,” replied Miss Backstick in a calm, soothing  voice, although her face was all pale. Nothing was going right. How was she going to take care of a 10-year-old like this? What would they do? Night visited the sky,the wind hurled around them until it gave them goosebumps all over. Days passed and being able to safely get some food in the countryside, they would’ve to wear detailed disguises so no one could ever get  a clue of their identities. Whenever they went through town, different posters were stuck on walls or buildings. It was either about Miss Backstick’s escape or the missing “daughter”. It only took one glance at it and  made Sava tremble. One day things really changed. Sava talked with Miss Backstick about how they would reveal themselves. It was settled. They would show their true identities   in the crowdest place. The fair. The last fair  was closed tomorrow because of the  war. They walked along all the games Sava dearly missed out on.  Oh she missed the salty, ruby red bacon and flavorful cheese that exploded its taste in her mouth. To wash it all down, warm milk spilled in her throat. She had to forget all of that and focus on what was arriving. There was a big crowd. And just like that they told everything to everyone. They never knew what was coming next,  to their shock, they accepted them. That wasn’t all though,  they had punishments.

“They both have to live with me as maids,”Protested Miss Lee.

Surprisingly, she came. They accepted. Finally they were together no matter what.

We were walking up to her house and Miss Backstick gave me a silver bracelet with a tiny, emerald. It sparkled like stars in a peaceful night sky. I looked at her in confusion but she told me 2 words.

“Remember me,”She whispered. I shrugged.

Well, that was the main thing that was stuck in my mind even now,13 years later. It’s just so sad that the next  day was my foster mum’s (Miss Backstick) funeral. She was very heartbroken but found light in the end. When I heard of the news I was devastated. I wept for days and tried my best not to think about it. I now live back in London because   the war has ended and is  fixed. There was a time when my biological mom had a bit of a fever but now she’s okay. I remember my eyes were flooding with tears as I saw dad coming back from the war. Here I am now in my office leading my own powerful family business.I look at my bracelet and smile.
