Chapter 2

Ezra starred at Annette then at Miss Astor then back again. She seemed confused as to why 2 humans were standing so still both with a gaze directed directly at her. Her long wings were dainty like a lace handkerchief, and as majestic as a Greek goddess statue. Her hooves were strong and as black as a pyrolusite as they went clink clank at the turf below her elegant figure.

Amazingly, Ezra sniffed Annette and licked her with a pink, rough, sandpaper like  tongue.

“She likes you.” Murmured Miss Astor as they watched her spread her exquisite wings and fly off through the forest green and into the starry sky. As they walked out of the clearing and back to the house, they paused- Ezra was behind them. Then a rustle of wind was all that was left.

She’ll be watching,” Miss Astor said in no more than a whisper as they walked in silence. Annette felt a sudden urge of energy. “ Why didn’t,” Annette thought for a moment before changing her mind. “How did you find her?” She questioned.“ I found her as a foal in Scotland while on holiday about 2 years ago.” After what seemed like a billion questions, they arrived at the house. Annette hadn’t realised how tired she was. She lay down in her bed and everything went black.

That night, Annette dreamed of the mystic animal, with her fiery eyes warming up the forest with their sparkling glow.

Day and night, Annette would be bonding with Ezra. Bringing her a dead ferret or maybe some bacon off her plate after breakfast. Ezra would walk up to Annette slowly snatching the treat out of her hands then making her way to the end of the clearing before munching happily on her snack.

One day as Annette gave Ezra her 10th ferret that day, the animal paused. Slowly she made her way to Annette and gave her a gentle nudge on the cheek and snuggled up trustingly to her. After that day, Annette wouldn’t be miserable as she went to school, or annoyed when she couldn’t sew right as her mind was always on Ezra and what they were going to do next.
