Soon, the Summer Holidays wandered over like a clingy puppy. Full of possibilities! Annette would wake up and feel the breeze of July winds on her orange spotted face. Everyday, she would go out in search of adventure! She would find a rock by the lake to cimb and sometimes a tree. If she was lucky she could find some ripe, blood red strawberries in the bushes. The sun gave everything in its path a radiant glow, the grass grew greener than Jade gemstones. Although it was different to anything Annette had ever seen, she was starting to call it home.
At night, she went into the clearing in the forest to feed Ezra. They could sit together for hours under the protection of the quiet, glistening ball of grey mist. The big oak’s leaves sway in silence as the crickets’ make a gentle chirp. The creek would be motionless as the stars admired their reflection in the twilight mirror.
At night, Annette would dream of someone finding Ezra, but she knew it wasn’t possible. At day, Ezra would hide in the underground cave they had found and at night she would hunt freely as her silky smooth feathers camouflage in with the trees around.
Then one afternoon, as Annette came home from another adventure she heard a scream. She heard the sound of Ezra’s call. In broad daylight! She must have seen a rabbit! Annette didn’t know what she was doing but she found herself running into the clearing, heart racing, mind wild. As she approached, she caught sight of Noah Harmsworth with blood dripping down his sleeve running, screaming as he went, but her attention quickly focused on Ezra who looked distressed.
“Ezra!” Shouted Annette as the animal kicked her front legs menacingly to Noah who now was exiting the clearing. “ Ezra look, a nice ferret!” Ezra walked over and took the ferret out of Annette’s shaking hands, retrieving it back into the forest.
Annette’s heart pounded. Someone had seen her. What could she do? What would she tell Miss Astor? The animal they both adored had been seen and if they wanted her to live they had to act fast. She and Miss Astor talked about sending her back to Scotland where she had found her. There must be some sort of expert right?
