Chapter 4
The next Morning the sun shone. Sun covered the flowers in peace; the sun burned the grass like a ready made pie , touching the edges of a baby’s finger; the sun reflected on the cottages, causing it to put holes in the roof. It was like Egypt , having moved to our home town. You could see Mrs Wood , spilling water over her head to get nice and cool , while the sun burned Blossom’s skin. Through the window Mrs Wood kept shouting that we would die at this rate.
But Blossom did not care, what she said at this point she had to go save Aphromoon and bring her back to where she belonged. If she didn’t they would die of the heat. She would need to think of some way of letting Blossom go. Blossom decided to take the chance since she was already outside, all she had to do was run away and rescue Aphromoon.
Outside, the sun burned Blossom’s delicate skin. It creeped in slowly inside Blossom’s t-shirt and stung her like a bee. Impatiently she ran down into Groves Woodland looking for Aphromoon’s call. But only the heat responded back to Blossom’s call.
She paused as Mrs Cathy’s house and knocked on the door a dark face appeared, a tall woman growled and said ‘’What do ya want eh leave me alone you got that.’’ Blossom’s face went pale. Mrs Wood had told Blossom that Mrs Cathy was an ignorant woman, a non stop chatter and an annoying little tattletale. But Blossom had no time to waste; she had to find Rose.
Sure enough Blossom could already see Mrs Woods point but blossom had no time to chit chat she entered her house and with a loud boom Mrs Cathy had shouted ‘’Don’t even come in ear with your mucky little feet stepping all over my clean and shiny floor.’’ She snapped, surprised at the thought of getting her floor dirty.
‘’Sorry Mrs Cathy, but have you seen Rose anywhere this morning? Said Blossom, gently. Mrs Cathy inhaled in. Dead rat more like she thought to herself. ‘’No I have not’’ she pushed Blossom out and slammed the door shut.
Blossom sat at the bottom of a tree near the market. She could hear the people talking and the wind whistling which made her shiver. It was then, by the trees she thought maybe Rose had gone back to see Aphromoon. It was like she wanted to speak to Aphromoon Blossom could hear her footsteps in the woods and her breath sounding heavily. It did make sense Rose had said she wanted to give animals a chance and she also said she would go down to find something fierce. It would be a thing that Rose would have done without thinking twice.
Now, this whole mystery story was nearly 40 years ago. Rose had come back! Somehow she had gone over her fear and had gone back, to give Aphromoon a chance. I saw her stammering in fear whispering to Aphromoon she had said ‘’ p..lea..se coul..d we ..b.b..e fr..ien..ds.’’
Rose is gone now. She had grown older and in the summer she went down into the darkness where berries grew and slowly without knowing she had eaten a poisonous berry. Her death was too sudden. Blossom and Rose could never see each other again and most of all her friendship with Aphromoon had ended. Still I dream about Rose and Aphromoon playing with happiness though that happiness had not lived for long. Soon after the war had ended in my hometown I had to say goodbye to Mrs Wood but Aphromoon was gone, her shadow still in the corner of the room.
One day in July, Mrs Wood had written to me to tell me that Aphromoon had gone even from the corner of the room. Our beautiful Aphromoon had died, her flower rotten. Though sometimes in the night her fur reflected on the moon and a shot of light glistened on my window. The beautiful memory of the great hyena who had lived for many years.
