Chapter II

Chapter II

That dragon. How ferocious Sharper was. It had eyes that were as red as the fire in hell. It had furr as orange as a ripe pumpkin. It had teeth as fierce as a cannibal. It had wings as big as an oak tree. The dragon had ears that could sense sound from miles away.

Sharper slowly walked towards me, as if I was his prey. Then, something unexpected happened. It snuzzled around me and made me feel as if I was back home in the city, in my warm, cosy room. I carefully petted him and it made this sound. Mrs Snark  told me that when it makes that sound, it means it is happy. I didn’t know what to do so I just smiled.  On the way home, Mrs Snark did not even shout at me for being out in the woods, dead at midnight, without permission.

When we got home, I couldn’t help but ask Mrs Snark about the dragon. She said “I once found an egg in the woods and brought it inside. But I noticed something strange was going on inside the egg and I thought there was a chicken that was about to hatch. I would wait for it to hatch every morning and every night for 16 days. But on the seventeenth day in the night, it  started hatching. There was one crack, then another, and  another, and it finally hatched but it was not a chicken,” she paused. “It was a baby dragon! I was about to keep it but then realised it must stay with its mother. I searched the whole woods and couldn’t find the dragon’s mother. So I kept it for 5 years then took her back to the woods and promised Sharper that I would always visit him and bring food.” And she had kept her promise ever since. “Please don’t tell anyone about Sharper or he will be captured and killed.”

“ I would ever tell anyone about Sharper,” replied Henry.

That same night, he dreamed about Sharper. His orange smooth fur, his sharp clean teeth. His gigantic long wings.

Every night, he would go and visit him and bring his scraps from dinner. He would also make traps to capture small animals for Sharper to eat. Once Henry would get into the woods, he would always see Sharper sleeping on the ground and he wouldn’t want to wake him up. He would just put the food next to him and the Sharper would immediately sense the smell of food. Sharper would first be happy that Henry was here then he would eat the scraps and animals. Every night, Henry would always get a feeling as if he was back home in the city with his Mother and Father in front of him eating dinner. Henry would always let Mrs Snark know when he is going to see Sharper in the woods and she then gives him scraps to give to him.

Over the weeks, Mrs Snark was being kinder to Henry and she would not  shout as much. Mrs Snark would sometimes also come and visit Sharper and every time, she would notice that Sharper and Henry had made a bond with each other.

Chapter III

Over a few months, Henry would visit Sharper daily and he would always bring food from his home. On the way, the weather was getting better so it wasn’t as cold as before. Once he got there, the dragon would always be looking for food. If they were lucky, they would catch a deer to eat. They would surround it then Henry would throw a spear at it. Henry would bring parts of the deer home for dinner. Mrs Snark would start to be nicer and kinder to Henry nowadays. She would read him stories before bed and even let him play around in the house. Just yesterday, she invited his friend and let him play. Then at dinner, she made spaghetti. At that moment when he was eating dinner, he immediately felt his heart dancing in his soul.

One day, Henry was on his way to Sharper and it was a lot colder than usual. The trees were dancing and being controlled by the wind. The house was freezing as it was when he first arrived there. The sun was surrounded by clouds as if it was going to be captured.

Once Henry got to Sharper, he was sleeping as usual. Henry bought as much food as he could bring. He put the food in front of Sharper and he woke up in an instance. Sharper immediately ate the food. He still had some meat left from the deer so he ate some of that as well. After he ate, Sharper and Henry both played. Henry brought a ball from home that Mrs Snark got for him. They played for a while then went hunting for a lion this time. They went far on the other side of the woods where the lions live. But what they didn’t know was that something terrible was going to happen.

How did this happen, how? Henry kept thinking to himself. He went up to Mrs Snark and said, “ Mrs Snark, I have something to tell you. Sharper and I went hunting and we got caught by somebody. We got caught by the owner of the lions on the other side of the woods. But before you say anything, I just want you to know that it was by accident.”

“ Why would you ever go there!” she yelled, “ I even told you that you could not go any further than the first half of the woods. Do you know how much trouble we are going to get into? Sharper is going to get captured and killed!”

“ I know that I could not go any further but it wasn’t my fault. Sharper was leading the way so I just followed him. Sorry.” replied Henry.

The sand giant

Would you be able to recognise a sand giant if you saw one? In fact they are similar to rock giants.

The male giants go outside on the island and look for anything to eat. They also make furniture and houses out of wood. They find sharp stones and then cut the wood into shape. They find strong vines and tie the wood together. They have clothes made out of leather in a variety of different colours. They have arms that can go so high that it can even go 100 billion metres high and it still keeps going. Their legs can also do the same. Most male giants have blue eyes but very few of them have green.

The female giants stay inside and clean the island. They then just do normal things a mother would always do with their children. They explore the island looking for salt and spices to put with seaweed to make a taste. They also get coconuts from palm trees. The female giants also have clothes made out of leather. They have colourful hair that is made out of sand and have emerald green eyes. Their bodies are made out of sand that you find on beaches.

Both male and female giants live together on an island. Nobody knows what the island is called but people call it The Sand Island.

Sand giants like to explore the world and like to eat seaweed from the beach. But not any type of seaweed, it’s a type that comes from their own very special beach from an island. Like most giants, they have gigantic and strong steel arms and legs that can never break. Typically, most sand giants are great, nice ones that like to help people. However, some are very rude and mean and they crush down villages with sand. The thing that sand giants really love are corals inside the sea. Sometimes they like to swim inside the sea around the island and if they are lucky enough, they bump into a coral. They take it back to the village and have a celebration. Then they divide it between themselves and eat it.

The main feature of the sand giant is that it can help and heal people. But lately because of climate change, they are dying one by one so they are now a very rare type of species. There are only about 200 of them that live on the planet so they are almost extinct. That is why sand giants are really rare species living on this planet.

Chapter IV

“We have to find Sharper,” exclaimed Mrs Snark, “ I just don’t know where he can be. We will have to search the whole town for him.”

“Sorry again, for getting Sharper caught. It was not my fault.” said Henry.

“ I know,” she replied, “ So you better be getting off searching for him now.”

Off Henry went, searching for Sharper. He got on his boots and coat and went searching. It certainly was the coldest day in summer. Lightly raining but the wind was so chilly. He first went to the lions on the other side of the woods and looked for him there. He asked the lion keeper where Sharper was but he said that he didn’t know. Then asked the lion keeper if he told anyone about Sharper then he said he was just about to do it now. Henry made the lion keeper not to tell anyone about Sharper, ever.

Henry then went searching in the woods for Sharper. In the middle of the woods, he found a very tiny cottage. It had steam coming from the chimney so he knew someone was in there. He walked up to the door and it creaked open. He took a step in and saw a cat right in front of the door. It tried scratching Henry but it got picked up by a lady. She looked like she was in her 40’s. “And who are you?” she asked fearfully that the boy might have diseases.

“ Hello. I am Henry Fletcher. Yours?” replied Henry, as he sat down.

“ I am Margaret Hill. What are you doing here, stepping into my house? You do know I just cleaned the floor.”she snapped, as she put on the kettle.

“ I just came here to ask something. Have you seen anything strange going on around here?” he asked.

“ Yes, I suppose I have. Yesterday when I went to get berries from the trees, there was a kind of beasty orange dragon flying in the sky. It was heading towards the cliffs.” she stated.

“ Oh. I must have not seen it because I was outside all day. I was going to head there just today.”

After a long time, Henry set out on his journey. He first went to Mrs Snark’s house so he could tell her where Sharper was. He got some supplies and went climbing up the cliffs. It only took a few hours, but he still got there in the end. He took a rest and started searching for Sharper. He was up on the cliffs searching for days but could not find Sharper. He returned back home to Mrs Snark and told her, “ I couldn’t find Sharper on the cliffs. The lady told me she was there but I just could not find him. Sorry.”

“ It’s okay,” sniffed Mrs Snark.

Several months later, they still searched but could not find him. The war ended so Henry could go back home to his mother and father. He said his goodbyes and got on the train. He was really happy that he was going home but at the same time, he was sad because he didn’t get to say goodbye to Sharper.

When The Dragon Falls

I have never wanted to leave home, to leave my warm cosy room. In Grasmere, all I could eat everyday was one boiled egg, one toast, two roasted potatoes and one small portion of salad. That is why I did not like my host, Mrs Snark. She never took care of me like my mother did. She was mean, horrible and very strict. Whenever she asked me to do something, she would always shout. Her husband was fighting in the war, as far as I knew, and Mrs Snark would always pray for him.

School was a lot better. The kids there weren’t that bad. The teachers were also okay. My teacher was called Mr Mator. They didn’t really beat up the kids like they  did in my old school. The children always liked to play outside. The girls would play hopscotch and rope and the boys would play marbles and jacks. I was okay with maths and reading but not writing. Once I would get home, to Mrs Snarks house, I would get   to pet her cat. I only got to pet her once a day. At home, I only had to clean the dishes and put the clothes on the washing line but when I was in Grasmere, I had to do those jobs and I had to go out into the garden, water the plants and vegetables, out in the freezing cold with no gloves or proper clothes for cold weather.

I thought she had this secret that she was not telling me about because twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday, Mrs Snark would go into the woods at 12 o’clock. I would  ask myself whether I should follow her or not. When we would have breakfast (one boiled egg and one toast), Mrs Snark would look really tired, as if she had had no sleep at all but at lunch, she would put on makeup to cover her eyes.

I have no idea why but one Tuesday night I decided to follow her to the woods because I was so curious that day. 2 minutes after midnight, I put on my warmest clothes and boots and followed her out. I was very careful, trying not to step on twigs and trip over. Soon, Mrs Snark stopped. I quickly hid behind a tree and peered at her.

I was so shocked at what I saw that I thought that I was dreaming. There was an enormous, ferocious, dangerous, fearless, fierce dragon. I was so scared, I just stood there, not blinking, full of fear.

The Letter

Dear Mother,

That journey to the new home was pretty boring but at least the pictures you gave me cheered me up. The journey was really long and everyone looked miserable and tired even though there were some fantastic views outside.

When we got off the train, we came to a place that looked like a market but wasn’t. It was where people took children to their homes. I was chosen first by a person called Mrs Rita. She was a kind lady and she told me that she will be taking me to her new home in Grasmere.

Once we got to her house, I immediately felt a blast of heat. The hearth, near the door, had loads of fire. I am staying with Mrs Rita and her three children Frank, Kevin and Alice and they all welcomed me home.

The house has four storeys and it also has a basement. There are four bedrooms, three bathrooms, two kitchens, one guest room and one gigantic garden. I got the guest room which was the biggest bedroom in the house. I had my own desk, my own bed and my own wardrobe.

Later in the evening, we were having dinner and Mrs Rita made my favourite, meatballs with spaghetti and rice. I think she only did it because it was Kevin’s birthday. In the night she let us play games and cards all the way until eleven o’clock when we usually go to sleep at nine o’clock.

Outside of the house, in Granville street, there are other big houses with big gardens and the people are really kind to me. Everyday after school, Frank, Kevin, Alice and I go play outside with the neighbours.

In Grasmere, school is a whole new place. Everyone has to sing ‘ God Save the King’ three times a day. Once in the morning, once before lunch and once before we go home. The teachers there are really strict and harsh. Every single time you do something that they don’t like, they beat you with a stick. The children there are kind and they don’t like to bully anybody. The boys play marbles and jacks and the girls play hopscotch and jump rope.

I hope I can see you soon but I can’t. I hope you are okay and I really miss you and dad. I want dad to beat up Mr ******* bottom so we can all be a family again.

From your only son,

Harry

The Luckiness Poem

My luck is made from –

Shining stars in the dark night sky,

Dancing planets singing around the beautiful moon,

The fuming sun playing on the earth’s horizon.

I found it –

Trapped in the smallest corner of the small, lonely, cold room,

Prancing around on the dreadful cliff,

Dancing cheerfully on the bright rainbow,

Crumpled in Cinderella’s shining shoe.

This luck can –

Make you win any challenge you do, no matter how absurd it is,

Get you millions of miles of happiness and pleasure,

Make you the wealthiest human who has ever lived,

Guess anything that will happen in the future and it will come true.

If I lost this luck –

The whole universe would shatter into small, tiny pieces.

THE SHIP

On the ship of wonder, magical stars lie down on the dreadful decks of the ship while a silent silver sunrise rose onto the horizon. The sea crashed down onto the rough land, throwing dead sea animals. Smashed seashells flew around under the roaring waves. Worn-out sea nets thrown out into the sea by angry fishermen. The pirates slept like corpses on the dusty floor.
