The Letter
Dear Mother,
That journey to the new home was pretty boring but at least the pictures you gave me cheered me up. The journey was really long and everyone looked miserable and tired even though there were some fantastic views outside.
When we got off the train, we came to a place that looked like a market but wasn’t. It was where people took children to their homes. I was chosen first by a person called Mrs Rita. She was a kind lady and she told me that she will be taking me to her new home in Grasmere.
Once we got to her house, I immediately felt a blast of heat. The hearth, near the door, had loads of fire. I am staying with Mrs Rita and her three children Frank, Kevin and Alice and they all welcomed me home.
The house has four storeys and it also has a basement. There are four bedrooms, three bathrooms, two kitchens, one guest room and one gigantic garden. I got the guest room which was the biggest bedroom in the house. I had my own desk, my own bed and my own wardrobe.
Later in the evening, we were having dinner and Mrs Rita made my favourite, meatballs with spaghetti and rice. I think she only did it because it was Kevin’s birthday. In the night she let us play games and cards all the way until eleven o’clock when we usually go to sleep at nine o’clock.
Outside of the house, in Granville street, there are other big houses with big gardens and the people are really kind to me. Everyday after school, Frank, Kevin, Alice and I go play outside with the neighbours.
In Grasmere, school is a whole new place. Everyone has to sing ‘ God Save the King’ three times a day. Once in the morning, once before lunch and once before we go home. The teachers there are really strict and harsh. Every single time you do something that they don’t like, they beat you with a stick. The children there are kind and they don’t like to bully anybody. The boys play marbles and jacks and the girls play hopscotch and jump rope.
I hope I can see you soon but I can’t. I hope you are okay and I really miss you and dad. I want dad to beat up Mr ******* bottom so we can all be a family again.
From your only son,
Harry
