Chapter 3

There was silence for a few seconds. After a while they managed mustered up the courage to follow it. They tiptoed through the doorway about a foot far until, out of nowhere the floor disappeared beneath their feet. Thankfully, there wasn’t a steep drop, but it was deep enough so that they couldn’t clamber back out. “What do we do now?” said Jackson in an annoyed sort of tone. “We could look for something to use.” replied Michael. They spent a good time searching for things to help with their escape, so far they had managed to collect some rope and a plank of wood. “I have a plan! If I hold that plank in place for you, then you can climb up, carrying the rope with you. Then, you hang the rope over the edge for me to climb up. Sound good?” explained Jackson merrily. “Yeah.” responded Michael. So they both enacted this plan and to great success! Now they had to find out who, or what took the photo and get it back. They both looked around the house for somebody, but they didn’t find anyone. Perhaps it was worth checking outside. And surely enough, when they went round to the back of the house, there they were…

Neronychterida (Water Bat)

Neronychterida is a species of sea going carnivorous bats, they are around 1 meter tall and cannot fly. They have a diet consisting of mainly of squid and small fish, they are in turn consumed by some whales and sea lions.

They have vastly different bodies compared to their land dwelling cousins, such as small wings which are stiff and short, used mainly for stability. Their back legs are also short. With long stiff toes that are webbed to provide propulsion. They have streamlined snouts and do not have much hair, keeping only the whiskers. All these adaptations reduce drag to almost nothing, granting high speeds getting up to about 30-40 miles an hour!

Although they have traits which help them move in the water, they also have things like the ability to close their nostrils, like seals. They also have third eyelids which protect their eyes while underwater. These are good adaptions but not that useful when you can’t hold your breath. Neronychterida can hold their breath for exceptional periods of time like an average of 45 minutes!

They are quite friendly and do not mind to be stroked or pet and very much enjoy it actually. Being groomed by one is the ultimate sign of trust and you know you have reached the highest point of relationship you can with one if it does this. They are friendly towards us but how about their own kind? Well they are known to form groups and hunt together, if one of the group members is injured and unable to hunt for food the others will bring them to a safe place a bring food for them. They have litters of about 3-6. The babies are very small when they are born, they are very small, about 6 centimetres long.

They are sold as pets. If you would like to buy make sure you have at least these requirements, a body of water for it to swim in. A bed of decent size. Buy food like mackerel, squid or if you would like to treat them, prawns. They require a decent amount of affection and bond easily, plus there is no fur to get everywhere! All in all they are magnificent starter pets!

Now you know everything about this completely incredible species! Like what they eat, how to look after one, and what they are like.

The Island of Miira is in danger. Miira is a decently large island of the coast of Africa. It is full of animals, plants and fungi. But a lot of the biodiversity is being sacrificed for money. Logging, mining and pollution all contribute to the loss of biodiversity.

Many of the animal species are facing tougher and tougher lives every day. One of such animals is  the Terrestrial Trilobite. Trilobites are an genus of arthropod, they were all thought to of gone extinct 252 million years ago until one was found here, even more shocking is that it had adapted for land! All extinct species of trilobite were aquatic. These are the last surviving members of the trilobite family and they are being severely endangered due to invasive species like cats and dogs. Usually it would be safe from these would be predators due it’s thick calcium carbonate exoskeleton, but it has a soft under side which cats and dogs are intelligent enough to access. Terrestrial Trilobites are highly nutritional so humans are consuming them too. Thanks to all of this happening these relics are highly endangered. To help them you can donate money to the Animal Research and Extinction Prevention Project, (AREPP) today.

An example of a habitat which is suffering are the northern pine forests. The pines have only been on the island for about 10,000 years, (that sounds like a lot but it really isn’t.) In this time the pines have diversified immensely, into large trees that go up to a hundred metres, to oak shaped ones and even pines like bushes. This habitat is home to many animals, although some of the most dominant creatures here are arthropods, like insects, arachnids and myriapods. Although these aren’t the typical houseflies and cellar spiders. Due to there being so many pines there is a huge gathering of oxygen in the forest. Guess what grows in size with excessive amounts of oxygen! There are huge dragonflies, reminiscent of the gigantic meganeura it is a fierce predator. Although these amazing and somewhat horrifying creatures are under threat due to logging and fires set off to clear the land. These amazing inhabitants are being endangered.

After reading this, are you happy about what is happening? Donating 10 pounds for a chance to save the amazing habitats and creatures, do you want them do die or survive? Remember. You can make a difference.

The Waterbowl is a flowering herb.

It has petals the colour of the beach tides that ripple like the water.
And has leaves with holes that the wind whistles merrily through.
Roots like delicate, silky spider webs.
And a dozen or so stems that hold up it’s cup shaped flowers.

It has culinary use like all other herbs,
in the form of delectable cyan pollen which is very sweet and crumbly raw,
but bees and other honey producing insects can make it into a clear blue honey.
This honey has amazing nutritional value and tastes very sweet,
so it is often made into sweets.

Although it does not just have culinary use,
like it’s counterpart, the Fireblossom, it has magical properties.
To access these properties grab a couple of petals, some pollen, clippings of soft corals and
most simple of all, a bottle of water.
Mix them together, take a sip and you can breathe underwater!

The Nowhere Emporium – Chapter 4 Charlie B

The Nowhere Emporium – Chapter 4

Jackson woke up, he was quite well rested. Then he went far onwards until he saw something. Something truly terrible, it was like a shadow but it wasn’t restricted to walls or the floor. It had enormous teeth, glinting in the ghostly blue light of this wretched place. He looked into its lifeless looking eyes and took off, going further and further away from the hut filled with video-games and towards the seemingly endless hallway. The shadow was fast but it had a hard time catching up to him. When he turned around, the devilish monster was nowhere to be seen.

Jackson was confused but then he saw why it had left, in front of him was a large jungle like area with sunlight flowing through the whole place. He walked a bit and saw a blue tree, it was massive and seemed to have a structure up top, so he started scaling it. When he reached the top he saw a door, it had a swirling pattern engraved in the frame. He opened it and took his chances, he would rather be somewhere else than near the hideous shadow. He took a step and landed in the emporium. He thought that this place was too dangerous and there was a reason for the police tape. He swiftly went through the emporium and out of its front doors, when looked back it was gone…

Prologue – The Nowhere Emporium

The Nowhere Emporium had been there for quite a while, when the police had first arrived to check it out they had told people not to enter and put police tape around it. Some people were disappointed, others were relieved, but Jackson was annoyed.

Chapter 1 – The Nowhere Emporium

He had decided to sneak out of his house at 2am, he ran across his street, then the other street and another, until he was standing in front of the police tape. He glared at it angrily and vaulted over. Now he was at the silky golden gates of the building, he had realised a while ago that he could slip right through them, so he did. Everything was bright and colourful, it was almost too much too handle. The floor was rather slippery and looked like metallic water, he could see some purple fish swimming under him, it was all rather confusing. He finally decided that he would explore a little more and then return tomorrow, so trotted along. Something caught his eyes though, it was a large leather bound book, it had shining gemstones encrusted into its spine. He picked it up and heard a rather frightening voice, he turned around and saw an old man he had lots of squirrels crawling across him, “I see you have found the book of secrets, do not touch it.” He mumbled.

Table of forging. By Charlie B

If I were summoned to forge a treasure, I would take:

The deadly toxin of the Death Cap Fungus,

the wrath of a Japanese Giant Hornet

and a piece of paper from the first book to ever be conceived.

For these three things will forge the core of a powerful staff.

For the next part I would take:

the bark of a tree that is exactly 374 years of age,

a poem by William Shakespeare in his youth

and a piece of the Church of England’s windows.

With these three pieces forge the handle of a powerful staff.

For the final part I would take:

a copper birdcage,

an egg of the last ocean crocodile

and the eye of a prehistoric fish.

With these three items will forge the last piece of the staff, the core’s cage.

When these three components are acquired place them on a table next to a beak of the last squid,

a gem from the beginning of the Earth

and agony in a bottle.

When this is completed you will have a staff of powerful proportions, for good or evil, light or dark.

Doors of Four, By Charlie B

In the door of emerald colour,

there was grass as bright as the sun

and fresh, delectable green apples, just waiting to be picked.

Within the door of sapphire colouration,

there were large fish tanks and snippets of the ocean,

all full of fish and fantastical creatures.

Inside the door that looked like amber,

there were flickering candles and a large fireplace,

with calming music and a fluffy orange sofa.

Into the door of ruby,

there were strawberries and lavish velvet carpets,

there were posters and lush raspberries too.

The Strange Roomed House, By Charlie B

In a room of doors,

I went spreading breadcrumbs on the floors.

In the room of clouds,

I had trouble not drifting of in the shrouds.

In a room full of vines,

I was climbing and it smelt like pines.

In one room with lots of birds,

I could use so many words.

This room was overflowing with rainbows,

Coming through lots of windows.

I came into a room with many trees,

I sat under the canopy which frees.

And I came across to the last room which was full of jelly,

I sat and feasted I came to the door very happy.
