The Island of Miira is in danger. Miira is a decently large island of the coast of Africa. It is full of animals, plants and fungi. But a lot of the biodiversity is being sacrificed for money. Logging, mining and pollution all contribute to the loss of biodiversity.

Many of the animal species are facing tougher and tougher lives every day. One of such animals is  the Terrestrial Trilobite. Trilobites are an genus of arthropod, they were all thought to of gone extinct 252 million years ago until one was found here, even more shocking is that it had adapted for land! All extinct species of trilobite were aquatic. These are the last surviving members of the trilobite family and they are being severely endangered due to invasive species like cats and dogs. Usually it would be safe from these would be predators due it’s thick calcium carbonate exoskeleton, but it has a soft under side which cats and dogs are intelligent enough to access. Terrestrial Trilobites are highly nutritional so humans are consuming them too. Thanks to all of this happening these relics are highly endangered. An example of a habitat which is suffering are the northern pine forests. The pines have only been on the island for about 10,000 years, (that sounds like a lot but it really isn’t.) In this time the pines have diversified immensely, into large trees that go up to a hundred metres, to oak shaped ones and even pines like bushes. This habitat is home to many animals, although some of the most dominant creatures here are arthropods, like insects, arachnids and myriapods. Although these aren’t the typical houseflies and cellar spiders. Due to there being so many pines there is a huge gathering of oxygen in the forest. Guess what grows in size with excessive amounts of oxygen! There are huge dragonflies, reminiscent of the gigantic meganeura it is a fierce predator. Although these amazing and somewhat horrifying creatures are under threat due to logging and fires set off to clear the land. These amazing inhabitants are being endangered.
