Recipe for happiness by Chloe SWW

Take the light of a shadow, and the smooth silk inside a chestnut.

Peel the rough skin of a ripe carrot, and the creaminess of an avocado.

Mix in grains of gold sand from an hourglass, and the lightness of a firebird’s feather.

Pour in the sweet, cold water from Nigeria falls, and the uniqueness of a snowflake.

Sprinkle in a silver flower’s petal, and the pinkness of blushing cheeks.

Stir in the scent of freshly baked bread, and the richness of creamy butter.

Bake until gold, spongey, with the texture of a lions mane.

Pipe delicate roses made from the sound of birds singing, and the serene surface of the atmosphere.

Eat with a dash of angel’s magic ice-cream.

Go and open the magic door – Chloe SWW

Go and open the magic doors.

Go and open the black door,

maybe you’ll see a silky ebony cloth that blocks the sunlight, or a stormy cloud waiting for revenge.

Go and open the berry red door,

maybe you’ll see a crimson forest in the middle of autumn,

or a thousand hurtful words.

Go and open the marigold door,

maybe you’ll see frosty fire reaching to the sky, or oranges stacked to eternity.

Go and open the dandelion door,

maybe you’ll hear the dark sun singing, or see the sunflowers dancing.

Go and open the brown door,

maybe you’ll see a coffin being lowered into the ground, or soil making life.

Go and open the grey door,

maybe you will smell spiralling smoke, or feel the fur of a seal.

Wonders-Chloe SWW

Wonders

In the room of the secretive sun,
gold heat circled my body.

In the room of the mysterious moon,
100 silver faces wailed sadly into the sky, their cold breath misty, and foggy.

In the room of settling stars,
pearls rolled down black hills of emptiness, like a blur of twinkling lights.

In the room of glass,
mirrors lay shattered, strewn into the night.

In the room of floating thoughts,
Ghosts of words hovered eerily above a whirling abyss.

In the room of time,
Clocks of every kind ticked, watching the seconds on the infinite waiting list.

In the room of freezing frost,
Icy blue layers coated houses and chairs.

In the room of life,
Colours burst, and the gold sun beamed.

In the room of death,
Black filled the room.
A single coffin lay still.
All was gone.

A cogheart adventure

Chapter 4
Evelyn slept soundly, her body stock still. She dreamed, the most wonderful dream. She dreamed of Papa, strumming the harp, singing softly. His voice was low, but loud, ringing in Evelyn’s ears like a dainty petal. Quietly, Ma crept in, and kissed her goodnight, her distinctive voice joining the song. They clasped hands for a second, then Ma disappeared. Evelyn let out a little yelp, but was soon soothed back into bed by her father. Anxiously, Evelyn would reach out, to make sure he was still there, and that he wasn’t going to go. Soon, the voice was faint, shifting away from her. He was blurring, his voice fading, then he had disappeared for ever.

Evelyn woke with a start, and for a second, gawped at the nature around them. Something clicked, and she realised. They were between two trees, their enormous leaves sheltering them from the rain. It wasn’t the cosiest place in the world, Evelyn thought, trying to take her mind off the dream. Peaking through the thick leaves above them, was the sun. It shone brightly, and it temporarily took her mind off the strange dream. Evelyn blinked, rubbed her eyes, and tore her eyes away from the it. Arconia was perching on a branch, about to leap off to take flight, but froze. Sighing, Evelyn clambered up the tree, ready to wind Arconia. Taking her in her hands, Evelyn climbed down and wound her up. Arconia leaped off Evelyn’s hands, thinking she was on the branch. When she spotted Evelyn she cried: ”I saw him! I woke up when the clock chimed six, and he was there, looming in the shadows!”
”Who?” asked Evelyn, but every part of her body knew.
”Lord Goldfly!” chirruped Arconia. The she yelled, ”Get up lazy bones! We’ve got work waiting to be done!”

”Hmph,” groaned Robert. ”My dreams are always disturbed!” Yawning, he stretched out, then his eyes widened. He looked around them, then seemed to remember. His tiredness blown away, he fixed his eyes on Evelyn.
”I’m ready.”
Within a moment, Arconia was fluttering as fast as she could, winds flapping frantically. Robert and Evelyn followed, until it felt like their hearts would burst out of their skin. Eventually, they reached the Skyo Moor. There, above them they spotted a large sky ship, with a figure inside, and it was almost certainly Lord Goldfly. The gold thread was in his hands, but he seemed upset. He was holding it tight, storming around the airship, faint cries of fury echoing in the sky. A rope was dangling down, and Evelyn knew that that the ropes on sky ships were two miles long. It had just left the ground. Racing towards it, they summoned all their energy they possible could.
”Here we go….” panted Arconia.
They jumped.

Clinging onto the rope was by far the hardest bit in the plan. Arconia, being able to fly, soared upwards, like a bullet from a gun. She may have been small, but she was strong and sneaky. She pulled the rope up, using all the energy she could muster. When they got on board, unseen, they noticed Lord Goldfly had dropped the string and was fiddling with the controls. Robert snatched it, and they let out a sigh of relief. It was safe.

”Rascals, varmints, scoundrels, pocket-pinchers!” screamed Lord Goldfly, thumping towards them. His mouth was square, eyes small. He looked more like a pig than a human.
”Hold on!” yelled Evelyn, and took hold of the controls. Robert grabbed the nearest mast and clung on. Arconia simply fluttered up. Suddenly, the airship jolted to the left, jerking Lord Goldfly off the sky ship. Rapidly, the trio rushed towards the edge, and watched as Lord Goldfly crashed into the sea, near the bank. He was shaking his fist, and screaming insulting, and upsetting things. Evelyn and Robert turned away, leaving Arconia to fly in circles saying: ”We did it, we did it, we did it!” Over and over again.

A few minutes after the victory, a groan was heard from below the decks. Evelyn seemed to know who it was.
”Ma!” yelled Evelyn. She scrambled over the few barrels that lay deserted, rushed down to the cabins, then found her mother. She was bound up tightly, her smooth hair now wild. Evelyn severed at her ropes and they embraced.
”Finally.” murmured Elena. Though they didn’t embrace for long. The airship started swerving from left to right, and Elena said, ”I’d better go up.”

Evelyn and Robert stood silently, watching the world go by. Tiny houses were dotted across the grey road; it was as small as a grey ribbon. Green and brown was separated by pale green hedges, near the tops of trees the size of buttons. Robert turned to Evelyn and grinned. A few frail snowflakes drifted onto the deck. The winter wind brushed against their skin. Arconia put her wing over her face, and snoozed.

The Air Giant – Chloe SWW

The Air Giant

Have you ever seen a Air Giant? I’ll tell you this – you have. Look up at the sky at night. See a star? That’s the air giant’s light, a guide back home. And maybe you have been lucky enough to see it’s solid form. The slender, pale giants, that don’t make a sound despite being as tall as the trees. And now you need to know more about them. You found the right thing.

The Male Air Giant.
The air giant is known to be one of the prettiest, shyest, and best at camouflage. Males are usually the ones who are seen more often, slipping into the air, or dangling their legs from the clouds. Similar to the moon giant, the air giant can become the air, invisible to all except the air sprites and fairies. When in solid form, the male air giant is long and thin, and resemble a sea giant – they wear blue and green clothes.

The Female Air Giant.
The female air giants often are the ones who protect their homes, and battle intruders. Despite their strength, they have long slender arms and legs, and thin long hair. When they are not by their home, they are usually picking ripe clouds, and juicy bits of sky to eat later. Female air giants wear similar things to the male air giant, but with more variety of colour; greens, yellows, blues, browns, and black.

Behaviour.
Not unlike the river giant, the air giants are very shy, and sensitive to noise. This can make them seem vulnerable, but don’t be fooled. Air giants have sharp pointed teeth, and can fight like a wolf, especially the female. However, if they are quick enough, they transform into air, and cannot be found again.

Diet
As said before, air giants eat clouds and bits of sky. Air giants also like eating other foods from above our heads; stars, wind, feathers, and most rarely lightning. Yet, they can be tempted by food that we eat too, even though sometimes it makes them sick.

So now you know about the fantastical air giants, that are giants, air and stars. These extraordinary creatures are unforgettable. Unfortunately, these creatures are being attacked, leading to a mass decline in the amount of air giants. Help save them, and spread the news of the air giants!

When the sun falls – Chloe SWW

Shirley gazed longingly at the steep fields of green, the bluebell scattered meadows, and the orchards of plump, crimson apples. Candyfloss like clouds drifted in the sky, and Shirley let her mind wander. There was no sign of war or destruction, and almost everyone looked happy – except the lookout soldiers of course – who looked alert. Shirley turned around, and flopped down on her bed, lying on a quilt that Old Rose had bought. Old Rose had always wanted a girl, and tried her best to spoil Shirley with knitted socks and sprinkles of sugar in her tea. In return, Shirley did the chores.

In the afternoon, she had to go to school in the village hall. The teacher was nice enough, but her broad accent made it hard to understand anything she was teaching. However, Shirley could already read and write, which made her soar to the top of the class. Sitting at the front of the class, Shirley could only think about her Mam and what she was doing. Working in a factory? Sewing clothes? Or could she possibly be planning to come and visit her, and perhaps stay? Her heart fluttered with hope, and at the end of class Shirley skipped happily out.

Weeks soared by, and even though Shirley’s Mam didn’t come and visit, she started to feel happy, and started to form a routine. In the morning she mopped the floor, or did the laundry. Then Old Rose would make porridge, and sometimes for a treat an egg and half a rasher of bacon. Shirley would read or play among the long grass, and then she would go to school. The broad accents were sounding more familiar now, and Shirley found that she was speaking like a country girl, although her manners were still pristine; not at all like a country girls. Soon, frost clung to the withering blades of grass, and small snowflakes drifted down from the sky. Flaming, furious fires flared in chimneys, and Old Rose’s needles clicked speedily, making new blankets by the second. It was perfect.

Yet, there was something that Shirley couldn’t stop thinking about. Old Rose always left the house at exactly 11’Oclock, armed with a tiny lantern, and herbs and a small knitted blanket. The tiny lantern would bob to Merriby Lake, on the outskirts of Acorn Forest. Where was she going? Was she meeting someone?

Shirley didn’t have to wait long – in fact, two weeks later, Old Rose woke her up, and together they walked through the night. To any other villagers, it was an old lady and her evacuee going for a midnight stroll. Though Shirley knew it was something much, much more.

The cold icy fingers pricked Shirley’s hand knitted shawl, and the thin trees round her whispered accusingly. She suddenly regretted reading paper books. The moon hovered eerily above her, and the fog started to close in. Shirley hurried on.

Old Rose stopped by Merriby Lake, (More of a swamp really) and went over to a head sized tunnel. Shirley could feel the tension in the air, and she could also see huge white feathers peeking from underneath leaves. Old Rose made a beautiful sound, the sound of a flute, the sound of winter. And from the tunnel emerged a beautiful, white bird. It’s long tail puffed up into a semi circle, revealing perfect feathers lined up neatly.
‘He’s a peacock. ‘ Old Rose whispered, chuckling at Shirley’s wide, startled eyes.
‘He’s called,’ The old lady paused for effect.
‘Arjun.’

Bravery By Chloe SWW

My creativity can make a paintbrush dance across a page with ease, smothering the paper in bursts of popping colour.

It can calm a raging child,

It can slice through boredom, like a spear slicing air,

It can smash stickmen.

Malamander-Chapter 4-Chloe SWW

Chapter 4

I’m ready to make a dash for it, but the safe way out is behind the byeolamander. Behind me, only sharp, dagger like grass glares at me with an intimidating authority. The pure white egg glows bright, and for the for the first time, I see a small shadow inside it. I close my eyes, preparing to die. Then I hear Violet’s voice, softer and calmer than I have ever heard her speak before. ”Don’t worry. We’re not here to hurt you.”

The byeolamander dims a little. It blinks at us questioningly, then lies down. I gulp. A path has now been made to the safest way out, but my feet are glued to the ground. ”We’re leaving now.” Violet says. She tugs at my jumper, but I still can’t move. I think of hot chocolate, imagining it pouring inside my body. It warms me up. ”Okay?” I say, and I find my feet moving.

As soon as we are outside, I breath a sigh of relief, and my shoulders relax. We walk across the beach; I am so tired my feet sink in the saturated sand. George talks nineteen-to-a-dozen, suggesting how we keep the byeolamander hidden. ”We could pretend there is quicksand, but what if a dog wonders there? Then the owner might climb in after the dog. Maybe we could build a cage around the hole and take it out when the byeolamander and its baby come out? Wait, no, that would just make people suspicious…” she rattles on, wringing her hands. I realise I am munching the jumbo pack of marshmallows I brought and suddenly have a brilliant idea. I stretch a couple of marshmallows, then lick it. They stick together. Then I drop it on the sand and watch as it comes back into shape. Will it work?

By the time we have entered the town, the sun has risen. Only a small slither is hidden in the horizon. Old Molly hums to herself, too busy organising bathing suits to notice us. The doors of Maria’s Café swings open, and Maria comes striding out with two, ice cold sundaes. ”Want some?” she asks, laughing at our faces. ”You pair look pale today, especially you, Miss Lottie Drops!” We ate the sundaes, thanked Maria, and kept walking towards the hotel. Ellie ran towards us, and shook our hands so hard she could have sent us flying. We smiled and kept going. Eventually we reach the hotel. I feel like rushing in and kissing every single wall. Will we manage our mission?

The rest of the day is spent looking at books, on hiding places and marshmallows. My plan had been to melt the marshmallows, stick them together, place it over the hole and cover it in sand. When the marshmallow hardens, the the hole will be covered until the byeolamanders eat their way out. However, this proved to be a little unrealistic, so we decided to search for other ways of hiding animals. Then as we walk out for fresh air, we see a bright, eye-catching poster outside the hotel. It says: New discovery! Sea glass found to be part of the byeolamander egg! Can give you great power and wealth. I look at George, she looks at me. Then George tells me a completely unnecessary thing. ”Should I tell you my name is Georgina? Just in case we die trying to look after the byeolamander and its egg?”

As I sink down to the floor, I have a feeling that it’s going to be a long time before I will experience peace again.
