Dear Mum,
Thank you for the soup. I ate it on the plane and it kept me warm the whole way there. After what felt like centuries,we arrived in Chipping. It is a small village. It is nothing like Eldon Street. It is very quiet here.
Once we arrived, hundreds of people came and chose which children they wanted. It was like going to town. I got chosen first. I think it was because I was at the front of the line.
Anyways I’m staying with Mrs Catt, in a small cottage. The water comes from a brick well in the garden. There is a button that you press and the water sprays out into a bucket.
The first thing Mrs Catt made me do was wash in the metal tub outside and it was freezing cold. When I got out, she didn’t let me in until I was fully dry and clean. When I got inside, she made me a lovely hot chocolate and told me to enjoy.
I have a small room in the loft. I can see the long road from outside of the window. At night, I can hear the bats flying around in the wind and the owls screech. I have been thinking about you and dad all day. Every morning, I wake to the sound of singing birds. There are chickens in the garden. There aren’t a lot of cars that pass by. Anyway, Mrs Catt lets me collect the eggs from the chickens. She has tall plants sprouting from the ground. It’s very quiet most of the time.
You will never guess this but Mrs Catt keeps a small horse called Laina in a small wooden barn in the garden. I have a few jobs to do throughout the day and the best one is feeding Laina. I also have to walk her through the path in the garden to get her energy out.
Every morning, Mrs Catt sends me off to school which is only 5 minutes away from her house.
Since it’s only 5 minutes away, a lot of us go there. We have to pray for the country and I sit on a bench in the middle of the rows of benches. I am trying really hard with my handwriting.
Sometimes,we have lunch outside on the picnic tables but if it’s raining we have to eat inside. Mrs Catt sends me to school with a dripping sandwich. Sometimes she sneaks an orange into my lunchbox as a treat. Lots of the girls eat strawberries that they picked on the way to school. I’ve seen them wash them in puddles and dry them on the grass. The boys and girls here are all right as they teach us a whole lot of games. The girls are really good at skipping and the boys are good at football.
I hope you and dad are alright. I think about you all day. I’ll write soon. Please write back to me.
Lots of love, Scarlett
