The countryside is bright and beautiful, Lois had never seen anything like it. The cotton candy clouds float through the bubblegum blue sky. The grass reached up to the sky and the sun smoothed Lois’s face. The train came to a stop at the station; they all got out with a suitcase filled with there essentials. Lois was the last one off the train and the last child to be picked. The only women left was called Mrs Bennet
‘Hello my dear, now what’s your name? ‘ said Mrs Bennet.
‘Lois’ she said whilst nervously taking one step back then another, then another until she was almost on the train back home. Finally, Lois built up the courage to follow Mrs Bennet. By the time they got there the sun was already setting.
‘Alright my dear?’ whispered Mrs Bennet
‘Yeah.’ Lois said sadly.
It was Lois’s bed time so she put her suitcase on the bed, opened it ,and grabbed out her: blanket, pillow and teddy. She also grabbed out a picture of Lois and her mum and she put it on the side table next to her and went to sleep.
The next day, was her first day of school. She got up, and found her school uniform lying on the bottom of the bed. She slid into it, and went downstairs for breakfast, just to find that Mrs Bennet was making porridge. She ate up all the porridge and packed her bag ready for school. Waving goodbye, Lois walked up the path to the school gate, where she met someone called Jake. She remembered him from her old school. They were partners for two weeks once, and had worked well with each other. The gate finally opened and they all went in. Lois put her bag on her peg, and sat down next to Jake. The teacher was nice and calm, but the headmaster … lets just say he wasn’t the nicest person to be around. Luckily he didn’t teach us until Thursday and Friday. The bell rang and it was time to go home.
A couple of days later it was half term. She was starting to piece together a routine. In the morning, she brushed her teeth, brushed her hair, and took a shower. Then, she got into her everyday clothes, which were always freshly washed and nice and warm. Lois finishes polishing the china, hoovering the floor and dusting the cobwebs. Then Lois collapses onto the comfy yet ragged couch, to read her favourite books. All she can hear is the breathing coming from her mouth, and the click clacking of knitting needles sewing up blankets ready for winter.
One day, Lois spotted Mrs Bennet writing a letter about a secret. She didn’t know what it was, but she was meeting someone at the school gate! Was it someone’s mum? Was it Jake’s Mum?
‘What could the secret be?’ Lois pondered too herself. She didn’t know what it was, but she was determined to find out. However, she didn’t have to wait long. Mrs Bennet pleaded Lois to stay behind, and told her that she was going to the shops. But Lois knew she was lying. She was going to meet the person.
Lois packed her backpack full of snacks ready to stalk Mrs Bennet. Just as Mrs Bennet walked out the door, Lois waited two minutes before she trailed Mrs Bennet – she didn’t want Mrs Bennet to get suspicious. Lois hid behind green bushes and stood against brown bark trees. It was freezing cold outside, but luckily she had packed a jacket to keep her warm. So, Lois took off her bag, took her jacket out and put it on.
Eventually, they stopped at a house. She didn’t recognise this house. Could this be Jake’s house? It looked like a wreck! The door was almost completely broken off, but they had to do with what they were given. It was the war after all. A minute later Mrs Bennet was gingerly knocking at the door.
Just at that moment, Lois accidentally stepped on a twig. Mrs Bennet whipped round, and saw Lois standing there, panicking.
‘What are you doing here young lady, I gave strict instructions to stay at home!’ hissed Mrs Bennet.
‘Well, you lied to me.’ pointed out Lois. ‘You said you were going to the shops! You didn’t even bring your ration book! What’s going on Mrs Bennet? What are you not telling me?
‘She already knows too much, you might as well tell her.’ said a pale face at the door. Mrs Bennet sighed.
‘Ok.’
They went round the side of the ramshackle building, to find a graceful mute swan.
‘She’s called…. Caroline.’
