Chapter 4

Chapter 4- disappear

Tom jumped but instantly regretted it. Surely there was a safer way down but Tom didn’t think about- he just wanted to get out. Although he was dropping, he could still here the squeaking vermin behind him. That’s when he thought it was all over- but he was saved. He felt a rush of warm air and something started to gather around him. Tom felt like he was being wrapped up and given to a child’s happy, smiling face on Christmas.

He could hear thunder and felt tiny speckles of rain drop onto his forehead. Tom still hadn’t figured out what he was in until he saw everything. It was: a dark, gloomy grey colour; it felt mysterious and unknowing like an unsolved riddle and it went at the speed of 85 miles per hour. Finally he guessed what he was in, he was in a tornado. He’d been swirling around for what felt like ages until it just stopped. Tom went tumbling to the floor and the crown fell of his head. Smash!

Tom turned around hoping to the see the doors to the Emporium. But all he saw was a gap between two other buildings. The magical shop had disappeared. Had he broken the magic by smashing the crown? The shop had been replaced with mouldy, rotten medicine boxes and sticky, red crosses. The objects had brought back memories that Tom didn’t want to have.

Chapter 3- The hospital

Tom had found himself in a small cottage hospital: deadly and contaminated. He saw: thick green moss growing in the creases of the traditional, Victorian windows; lifeless dead stems growing through the rotting bricks into the room and infectious, squeaking vermin scrambling recklessly around the cottage. Nothing could keep the vermin under control. Chaos!

Tom had been perched on the window ledge for 10 minutes- frozen with shock. Would he ever get out? He couldn’t just stay there forever, he had to get out before his body was added to one of the many piles of dead bodies. Tom’s mind travelled back to the emporium: if he had never gone in then he wouldn’t be stuck in such a life-threatening place. Suddenly he regretted everything. How could he escape?

Tom had finally got up, but he was quickly approached by a nurse who looked as lifeless as the dead bodies. The woman could barely keep her eyes open. How many hours had she been working for?                   She softly spoke, “What are you doing here? Sorry no visitors. If I were you I’d get out of here as quickly as I could. You’re very lucky to not be infected with this deadly virus!”

Tom exited the room and ran crazily down the hallway. On the left side was a door that was labelled ‘supplies’. Tom twisted the rust handle. Squeak. A window was open and it was a great opportunity for him to escape. Out he went onto the rooftop.

He was trembling with fear. His escape route didn’t go as he planned. He was swarmed by a huge group of ravenous rats. Tom couldn’t escape them. They had: greasy, rough fur that was uncomfortable to touch; black, beady eyes that acted like a mirror and a long pink tail. There was only one way out and that was to jump…

Chapter 2

To another world

Tom could not help but stare at the crown. Once he had spotted the luxurious, mysterious, diamond-encrusted object, his eyes never moved away from it. The jewels were as red as blood and it felt like it was showing a movie. It was as delicate as glass and as magical as a wand.

“Get away from that crown!” shouted Mr Luciano, “You don’t know what it’ll do to you.”

“What do you mean?” questioned Tom confusingly, “Is it magical?”

“Of course it is,” replied Mr Luciano, “I don’t have any fake magic in this shop.”

Tom was amazed at all this, this shop truly was one of a kind. Mr Luciano hard some glass break in a nearby room and huffed his way along a narrow, dark corridor. Tom blew a sigh of relief, he didn’t have an opinion on Mr Luciano but if he did it wouldn’t be the best. Eagerly, Tom picked up the crown…

Tom started to slowly place the crown on his head: hoping he would feel royal but Mr Luciano was correct. Smoke started to swirl around him like a tornado. Everything around him was silent until he heard that dreadful coughing sound. He had been teleported back in time to the black plague.

Tom was shocked. Out of all the places he could go to, it had to be here. He was strolling around the contagious streets staring at dead bodies. All the people around him had boils growing on their faces- hopefully he hadn’t. Tom was disgusted. Nothing else was heard except coughing and spluttering.

Tom was still trying to properly examine his surroundings. The blood on the floor was the exact same colour as the jewels in the crown: he knew it all linked. What upset Tom the most was the children crying at their parents dead bodies. Now he had truly understood how horrible it must’ve been.

Chapter 1

The Lonely Emporium

Tom was always half asleep, he was never fully awake. His mum always had to drag him out of bed in the morning. His teacher was always giving him detentions for falling asleep in class. One day after school, he was strolling in town when he found a shop with a warm, comfy bed in it. He’d never been in there but had to go in and lie on the bed.

After Tom’s 4 hour nap, he felt revitalised: for the first time in a while. Maybe this odd, lonely shop was magical. The sun was setting and the whole Emporium lit up. He was surrounded by a whole lot of things. Across the room from him stood a tall cabinet of books stacked right to the top of the room. The title of one of the books was “how to turn your teacher into a spider!” Tom gulped when he read that.  The books were magical, ancient and witch-like.

He glanced over to another corner. A small glass table sat in the corner. The table was layered with padded fluff and had something bright on the top. He slowly started to walk over: still confused why it was just him in the shop. Tom got closer but got blinded by the beaming, transparent jewels. He was in shock. No one knew how much they cost: they were priceless. Tom didn’t know all the names for the jewels but the ones he knew were rubies and emeralds. They came in all different shapes and sizes.

The last thing he saw ( or so he thought) was a door. It looked regular but Tom knew it wasn’t. It was tall, black, oak and worn down. Tom thought it was a portal but it looked unreliable. He touched the stone-cold golden handle with fear filling up his body. It had a mysterious and magical look to it. He was sweating.

On the other side was a crown. Tom walked forward making sure the door didn’t lock behind him as he didn’t trust this place. The room was lit up by the richness from the crown. Tom ran his finger along the intricate designs, wiping the dust away to reveal an even brighter layer of gold. It was encrusted with crystals- even more blinding than the ones before. All Tom could think about were the Crown Jewels. The crown was velvet trimmed.

Tom jumped at the noise of the door. In walked an old man with a white, fluffy Barn Owl perched on his shoulder.

” Hello sir, do I know you?” questioned the man.

Prologue

The Lonely Emporium

There are some shops that never hear the bell saying that someone has entered. The lonely Emporium was one of them. Rumours- good and bad- spread like wildfires in the town of Glasgow. Nothing good was ever said about that solitary, neglected shop. Perhaps people spread rumours to him because it was to mysterious and magical for him to know about. Perhaps n0-one had ever been inside because it was to unknowing: people say it was a disappearing act. Perhaps it was true that inside stood piles of weak, ancient books stacked up to the ceiling: books full of dangerous, life-ending spells. Even at Christmas when the lights glisten and the small, porcelain dolls are sat in the dirty, glass windows catching the children’s eye, the shop is still untouched. It really was lonely.

The eye in the sky

If I were summoned to create a treasure ,I would take..

the brightness from the luminous, blinding sun,

the fiery fierceness from a bonfire,

the ancient, razor-like teeth from a Megalodon shark,

a strong, electric lightning bolt from a storm,

the deafening, deadly roar from a lion,

the reflectiveness from a tall, elegant mirror,

and the mysteriousness from a golden, intricate watch.

In The Magical Emporium

In the room of amazing art, the paintings started talking to me. In the room of beds, the quilts opened and welcomed me to the wild wilderness. In the room of cotton clouds, the shining sun woke up. In the room of gruesome graves, dead bodies had arose and started singing hymns. In the room of chickens, I got chicken pox. In the room of literacy, everything I spoke spoke of appeared. In the room of drawing, my dreams appeared.
