Chapter 1

~Prologue~

Even though, the diamonds in the shop window glistened in the ecstatic sun. Even though, the latest toy sits on display of the toy shop. Even though, the whole shop smelled like lavender flowers. Even though, rainbow umbrellas come in handy.

No one had dared to enter the Emporium – until Evelyn.

~Chapter One~

Evelyn had always been a curious one and her mother often warned her that it would get her into some type of trouble or danger. One windy Saturday, she was walking down Kingston Road when she noticed something odd about the Emporium. For once she’d seen the door open, without thinking about it she slowly stepped inside.

Everything Evelyn laid her eyes on she wanted to touch. The whole shop was filled with the sound of 90’s classic music. Several hand sculpted cuckoo clocks were ticking every second, on the counter there were some vintage necklaces for 99p. There was a display crowded with military toy soldiers, nesting dolls and stuffed animals. Coloured umbrellas swung from the ceiling hook. To one side stood a rack of children’s rain jackets. They were covered with rainbows, different animals and monster trucks. A group of goldfish swam in a fish tank as their gold scale glistened in the sunlight. But what Evelyn loved the most was an old leather-bound book she found. As her curious self turned each page over the letters sprung to life and formed little pictures of what the page said.

“I see you’ve found my favourite book,” a voice whispered quietly. Evelyn stepped back in fear, and dropped the book. She looked up at the owner of the book. She was an old woman whose face was all wrinkly and sagging. On her shoulder was a macaw. It shook its head disapprovingly.

A homemade apple pie in the oven

If I were summoned

To create a treasure

I would take:

The smell of

A homemade apple pie in the oven,

The scent of vanilla  extract

And the smell of the Lavender Febreze Light Plug.

The touch of

The broad long, slotted feathers of the golden eagle

The scratch on a tree from a deadly tiger

The allergic reaction from a tarantula bite

The taste of My favourite taco sitting beside me,

The best oreo milkshake with whipped cream and a chocolate drizzle

And the most juiciest strawberry to be eaten.

The touch of

Hair tickling me shoulder

The uncomfortable feeling of grass stroking me

And the boiling sun punching down at me.

The sound of

Waves against rocks,

A Leaf crunching under my feet

And heavy rain on the window.

My struggle of Life

Amber Smith didn’t want to leave home. She glared out the foggy  glass window of her pink bedroom, a long distance from the rocky hills covered in snowflakes. She missed cars honking at each other, and shouting. Just the typical city life she was comfortable with, a place she called home. The attic is where she slept. Mrs Amana had chosen the room for Amber. It smelt like lot’s of beauty products but she took them all out so Amber could sleep in that room. Amber felt disgusted because the soap scents were just too strong for her.

The next day Amber started school. It was going okay and Amber was good at most of the stuff there, until there was a really hard class that made Amber really annoyed, so she went to the bathroom and stayed there until the lesson ended, then left. People had always stared at her as she was walking past the hallways because of her act that day when she locked herself in the bathroom, and because she was an evacuee and people were shocked at Amber’s story and thought she was a bit strange. At lunch it was even worse. She felt like more eyes were on her. When she gave the dinner lady her ration book and sat down at a table, that’s when things started to go downhill. A group of popular girls came up to Amber and told her to go somewhere else because it was their table. Amber felt worse and worse as hours passed by in school but she knew she just had to get used to this kind of treatment.

At night, Amber was just about to get under the covers, but then Amber  heard footsteps outside. It was Mrs Amana. She tip-toed near the window and hid behind a box. She had a torch and was holding something in her hand. Amana was kind of getting used to her doing this everyday, going outside but she never really saw what she was doing. Why did she do this every night?

Amber tried to ignore her and go to sleep, but then she started hearing low growls and purrs. Mrs Amana saw me and sighed

“Get over her Amber, since you’re so curious!” shouted Mrs Amana as Amber slowly rises, one knee at a time. We walked into the back garden shed and she showed Amber the baby cub tiger. She said she saw it getting attacked in the road by a bunch of older tigers. So she picked up a stick and started hitting them with it.

Mrs Amana stared at the cub as its blue eyes stared right back.

In the room of who knows….

In the room of beautiful butterflies,

I watched their elegant colours burst out of the larva.

In the room of  flowers,

the sun smiled down at a rose as it bloomed open.

In the room of shadows,

they dance around me as I turn around in circles.

In the room of space,

I saw the moon and sun on opposite sides of the earth.

In the room of emojis,

they were sent sprightly as quick as flash

In the room of clouds,

a cloud landed on my hands turning it into cotton candy.

Chapter 3

The summer holidays stretched ahead like a piece of gum stuck on the wall. Everyday Amber would go on a walk and take a morning stroll in the small town. By the time everybody else was awake she was already up and made her breakfast by herself. Without Amber realising, the rivers and forests were slowly becoming what she was used to seeing every morning. Outside, the weather was always sunny and never foggy and the atmosphere was always positive and healthy. Inside, it was always just a small cottage with a warm fireplace cackling. But in the city where Amber used to live in was really busy and wasn’t as quiet and peaceful as the small town she was living in now. You could hear people shouting, trying to sell food at their stands, and cars honking at each other. Amber was starting to like this new place she was living at was starting to feel more at home.

At night, Amber would make way for her night time routine just to go out into the back garden shed just to play with Alisa. Sometimes they wouldn’t play and just spend quality time together. Whether it was just sitting down together and laying on the grass and looking at the starry night sky, while talking about all of Amber’s troubles. And surprisingly Alisa understood. It would always put a smile on her face knowing that Alisa was by her side. Every once in a while when they would be sitting in the night sky,  Alisa would hear rustling in the bushes. She would jump on to her feet and start making a run for the bushes. She would return with a bunch of rabbit species such as, Rex Rabbits, a mini lop rabbit, and a Holland Lop, those were her favourite three to catch.

The one thing that would keep Amber up at night was that she was worried about Alisa getting caught. In the daytime, Alisa would keep herself in the cage Amber had decorated her with stickers. At night, she would rome around the village for hours and would come back early in the morning. She was almost impossible to catch Alisa, but Amber would still have a fear of it happening.

It happened. The one thing that Amber was worried about happened. One night when Amber wanted a treat for her and Alisa, she was collecting logs in the bushes so she could create a fireplace until, she heard a high pitched scream and growling. She came closer and closer to the sound to see the next door neighbours daughter and Alisa. “DON’T JUST STAND THERE AND LOOK, HELP ME!” said Ava with a part of her skirt on the floor and out of breath. Amber rushes towards her and grabbs Alisa. “A..A..Amber, you know this horrible creature?” Alisa snapps as soon as she finishes talking and starts snarling at Ava. “Keep still Ava, and then she’ll stop attacking you.” whispered Amber as Alisa starts calming down. She hands over a perfectly skinned rabbit to Alisa and she gobbles it down. Ava took her chances and spirited over the fence to her house. Amber could hear a loud loud thud and she knew that Ava fell over the fence. Alisa looked around trying to see where it was coming from but just hopped out of Amber arms and back into her cage. The secret had been kept for so long and Amber was upset that she had broken the promise Mrs Amana told her to keep. When she returned home, she and Mrs Amana had a really long conversation about what they were going to do with the situation. They were thinking about moving Alisa somewhere else. Mrs Amana suggested they take her to a hidden valley where she would not be disturbed or caught.

My Tragic Life as an Evacuee

Dear Mum,

Thanks for the warm weighted blanket, it kept me very cosy on the train. What felt like hours later we finally arrived. It’s my first time in Wales, and the view is absolutely stunning. The weather was  way better than back at home, where the smoke is strangling the sky.

I stood super still like I was stuck in concrete as I waited to be chosen by my guardian. A short, skinny woman walked over and without caution she grabbed my hand. She gave me a friendly smile and it made my heart melt and made me feel safe.

I’m staying with Mrs Oatlen in a small, little stone cottage. The water comes up from a well. We pull a string which is tied to the bucket, and we lower it down until we get enough water to pull it up and drink it.

The first thing she made me do was to help her mop the floors. She did downstairs and I did upstairs. She had one mop, so she took it and I had to get on my hands and knees, with a sponge and a bucket. She couldn’t do it because it would hurt her back. Mrs Oatlen would not let me go downstairs, until the floor was shiny enough to see your reflection. After that we sat down at the dinner table and she gave me a cup of tea with a slice of carrot cake. She has a very British accent which makes me laugh a lot, but she’s really nice and we get along quite well.

I have a little room in the attic. I can see through the window that has soft pink coloured curtains. At night I can hear birds singing and trees swaying in the heavy wind. I’ve prayed every morning, and night about you and dad. Every morning I wake up to the sound of a chicken. It doesn’t fully wake me up but it’s enough to get me out of bed. There are loads of chickens in the backyard that are running around. Miss Oatlen let’s me collect the eggs and that’s what we have for breakfast. She has rows of fruits and vegetables in the front garden and we often pick those together and cook them for dinner.

You won’t believe what we did this week. We made a pond in the back garden. We started by laying bricks in the shape of a heart, then started covering it with cement. We waited a few hours until it was dry so we could paint it and add decorations. I added flowers and lily pads. It was so much fun, rather than staying under a table hiding.

There is a town called Yookia and that’s where we are staying. There are about 25 houses including us and other villagers. There is a stone pathway that’s connected to all the houses. The town can’t afford to buy carpets to scrape their feet on before they come into houses so we use this stone path to scrape our feet on. The fields are a bright green and just by looking at it you can tell it’s a clean and safe environment unlike home.

Every morning Mrs Oatlen makes sure I walk safely to school with my friends. She always checks my back to make sure I have the right things for school, such as my gas mask, ration book, notebooks, and pens. I have got lots of friends to play with, like Lacy Isabella, Brooklyn, Ella, and Louisa. They teach me more than I have probably learned in my 7 years of living. We braid each other’s hair, play hopscotch and skipping. It’s so fun.

I hope you, dad and my friends who didn’t get to come are doing okay. I think about you every day and I miss you guys all so much. I wouldn’t trade you for the world. I’ll write again soon, and I hope you write me a letter back. Bye.

From, Vanessa

Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Terror runs down me, I’m ready to leave  But then I see it. I see the golden details on the egg glisten and glow… The egg was going to hatch anytime soon. We greet the dresen green diamond eyed creature. “Don’t worry, we’re not here to hurt you, don’t panic.” Bella says, looking fearless. The mander looks back at her with a calmer face. The creature lays its head back, Its orange, shiny fur covering the egg nest. It takes a moment as it slowly walks towards us and tilts its head in confusion. We silently power walk past the Mander as a faint line of light reveals itself. We ran to the light and left with a sigh of relief.

Outside, I take  a long sigh as my hand began to stop shaking. Inside, we hear the Foxamander purring as it shuffles towards the egg calmly.

Amanda is putting out a few chairs as it looks like she’s excited for her new Iced Coco Latte to be on the menu. She waves at us with a friendly smile. Isla’s Ice Cream shop is opening soon. She’s inside trying to figure out how to get the ice cream to come out of the free samlp machine. Mrs Adams pulls down the awning to her kebab shop. She sets out to the butcher shop for more meat.

Bella messes with the keys, I handed her, as I try to bust open the secure door. Inside, it is warm and silent. Soon the museum will be full of customers. As I open the office door, my mind leaves my body. Will the Foxamanders egg hatch carefully? Will the mother Foxamander be able to handle all of these nosy people. Is the egg special?

For the whole day, Bella had her face stuck in books. She had just started a new book about ancient rumours about the Foxamander. There’s 45 chapters, and she just reached the 23rd chapter. That shows how much she’s been reading the book. The book has also got a section all about the Foxamanders egg. She found out the egg glows when it’s happy and it can heal wounds.

The adventure awaits…
