Sea Serpent continued…
Chapter 4
We’re getting ready to run but the exit is blocked by the Sea Serpent. The deep green egg glows and I notice that it is covered in tiny specks of blue. But we are trapped! Noah starts talking in a low calming voice, “It’s ok, don’t worry,” he says to show that we mean no harm. He’s trying to sound calm and disguise his fear.
The Sea Serpent looks at us both with its beady red eyes thinking we are going to harm it. “We promise we will not harm you or your egg. We will protect you.”
Noah holds out his hand to prove we mean no harm. The Sea Serpent trusts Naoh and seems to be listening to what he has to say. The Sea Serpent backs away from the doorway and lets us walk through.
“We’re going to leave now,” says Noah. Stepping to one side we both walk away and leave the theme park. I look back and see the Sea Serpent’s beautiful red eyes. Noah tugs my shirt and we walk off. Safe at last.
Outside, the cold air hits me, making me shiver. Inside, we can hear the Sea Serpent settling down on its egg. We take a sigh of relief knowing we are safe at last.
The sky is clear. A full moon sits in the dark blue sky and makes us feel like we’re in a dream. We walk back towards the promenade and talk. Nobody must find the theme park. No one must find the Sea Serpent and its precious egg. Noah has loads of ideas of how we could keep the Sea Serpent and its egg safe. “We could put up a sign saying ‘ construction work keep out ‘ maybe that would work,” I nod even though I had no clue what Noah had just said.
By the time we are walking through the town the sky is awakening. The sun edges over the blue sea, casting shadows in the sand. Mrs MIller was putting out some stripy deck chairs as it looks like it might be a nice day for once. She waves to us and gives us a caring smile. Connor’s corner cafe is opening and inside he’s brewing up an urn of tea. Mrs Wicket pulls down the awning at her Sea Surf corner shop. She puts out piles of surfboards and beach umbrellas in all different colours. By the time we get to the ice cream parlour cars snake past to get to the seafront car park.
I get the keys out of my pocket and open the door. It is quiet and peaceful but later it will be packed with people trying to get an ice cream. My mind races with worry. Will the Sea Serpent’s egg hatch safely? What will happen to the Sea Serpent? Noah walks off to look at the ‘Amazing Beachcombing Finds’ .
I stand beside him and he points to the fragments of sea-worn glass. And he found some that are deep green with blue speckles. We look at each other both thinking the same thing.
All day, Noah has his nose stuck in books, old logs and records. He finds a lighthouse keeper’s log from 1823. It is a story about a lighthouse keeper who spotted a creature in the sea one night. He wanted to find out what it was so he went out to sea. He was never spotted again.
That evening, we talked. Our discovery is not over. It has only just begun.
