The airship

BOOM!!

The sound of the thunder made their bones shake. Lightning flashed bright like a thousand light bulbs flickering on and off. John tightened his hold on the hand rail as he looked out of the window into a blanket of cloud. At first, he could see nothing but then slowly the landscape below came into view , just like pieces of a giant jigsaw puzzle. After what felt like ages, the cloud finally cleared and John could see the island below.

He could make out the shoreline with rocky cliff faces, climbing out of the water. Behind a humongous forest with trees reaching up like fingers into the sky, their large leaves are starting to wrinkle and turn brown, making it hard to see the ground below.

The airship felt like it was falling faster and faster as the winds smashed into its side. John becomes more nervous as he hears strange sounds from inside the airship. Are they sounds of the metal work banging together as they break free from their fixings? The ripping of the airship’s skin sounds as though someone is tearing a piece of paper. John is thinking to himself will the Airship even make it to the ground or will it disintegrate high up in the sky leaving him to plummet to the ground

Beyond the forest the captain notices a large field and turns the airship hard towards it in the hope they will make it before the trees reach up and grab them from the sky. The ground is approaching quickly but so are the trees. John is thinking will we make it, will he ever see his family again? Finally they break free of the trees and John hears the captain shout “brace yourself”. The airship hits the ground hard and John is thrown forward, hitting his head on the window. The ground makes a grinding noise under the airship and feels like an earthquake rumbling all around them. After what seems like forever the airship finally stops and comes to rest leaning on one side.

Pulling himself up off the floor, peering out of the hole in the side of the airship he noticed the churned up ground caused when the airship ploughed nose first into the field. Helping the Captain to his feet they opened the door and peered out. The cabin was dark with no lights but even in the storm the brightness made them both cover our eyes with their hands. He could see thick large trees with bushes at their base. The strong winds make them all sway in rhythm like soldiers on parade. Above him the storm raged on with flashing of lights and deep rumbling thunder. The wind carries the smell of the sea and reminds him of how lucky he was to find the island.

After what seemed to be ages the storm moved on leaving a blue and a scorching sun. They decided to explore the surrounding area because they had little food and water to last for more than a few days. They stepped off the broken airship and headed for the forest. The ground is wet and muddy and soon their shoes are completely brown. As they approached the trees they heard the sound of a twig snapping ahead of them. They freeze, and stare into the trees curious to find out what made the sound. It was hard to see more than a few metres ahead due to the shade from the trees above, thinking they saw a bush move. Scared of what might be in there they turned around and started to walk away, but looked back to see if all was clear. At that moment they saw it…
