A letter to my beautiful mam (evacuee letter)

Dear Ma,

Thanks for the soup, it kept me warm on my long journey. I sat staring at the train window in complete upset. I was bored and all I had was my teddy bear. What felt like decades later, we finally came to a halt. It was my first time being separated from you and pa, and I felt like the world would come to an end.The weather back here is dark and gloomy, but the children here are just as bad. Adults kept on gathering around like a circus, children coming and going like returning a bought item. I was the last out of the bunch. All hope was lost, as I clutched onto my teddy bear crying for help and an unexpected hand grabbed me. A tall, thin lady who collects me gave me a mischievous grin.

She lives in a mossy old cottage, with a broken gate. House is shattered from the outside but on the inside it is fit for a king. At first she was really kind but at this rate I am planning an escape route. Her wicked heart gives no shame. She trapped me inside her fragile house making me look as if I’m a maid. She tells her friends that I’m just as foolish as a goat, her unpleasant smile gives the world a shock.

I like my new home, but I’m the one who mops, sweeps the floors and wipes the dinner table. Oh ma I wish you were here to comfort me, please spare my broken heart. The cottage is old and beaten, the floor is rusty and the plates are shattered.

The best thing on this unpleasant journey was getting to write this letter to you.

The village I live in is appalling. Looks good when you first arrive but as soon as  you live its crime to crime. St Fagans is the place I stay. I prefer my home town  because its more fun,  but not with the war that’s happening.

My school is calm but strict .The girls have to wear long pleated dresses with buttons, whilst the males have to wear button up t-shirts and a long pair of pants/shorts. Today we learned about fractions and decimal numbers. Our head of form Alyza Mohammad is very kind, and also my best friend. We have a small playground. Our lessons are swimming,   PE, history, math, english, french, spanish, latin and geography.

Thank you for reading my letter, I hope you enjoy stay safe! And send my regards to Pa

Lots of love from your dearest child,

From: Jayne
