The Opal Butterfly

The Opal Butterfly

The Opal butterfly had gone missing 150 years ago and has finally come back! After being missing for exactly 1 century and a half scientists are doing their best to find more, but in the meantime, they are caging this insect to be able to investigate. Would you know what to do if one landed on you right now? Would you even recognise it?

Just like any other butterfly, the opal has large thin wings, antenna, abdomen, forewing and hindwing and lives in the rainforest. Though this seems like any ordinary butterfly, it can enable more features on itself;venom in its antennas, can enlarge its wings and shrink when in danger.

If you observe closely, scientists say that the opal butterfly’s body is covered in tiny jewels and gems which make it glimmer when the sun’s light reflects on it. Surprisingly, when they scarce d, they are most likely to turn pearl green and make weird noises. This also gives you a warning to back off, as they might soon attack if you come across one. They store some deadly venom in their antennas, which they rarely use as they live solo and don’t interact much. Although if you do ever come across an angry Opal- BUtterfly, try to dodge their spurting venom, or else in the next few seconds  you’ll be needing a trip to the hospital

Emporium Story-Chapter 4

The voice boosted the speed of Felicity’s legs; she ran around desperately but lost hope. She had opened almost every door so far but not one had led her back. Tired, she stumbled across to the final door and looked down to see a deeply dug rabbit hole. She gulped; she knew she had no other choice. Irrationally, she jumped inside, hoping to find a door or exist.

Placings her hands over her head and face, Felicity fell and had a tough landing with rocks and pebbles on the surface. She flicked away the stones and revealed a grey door. Impatient, she heaved and tried to pull the door open but couldn’t. Felicity frowned. She looked around for help and then found a platinum key under a rock. She picked it up and unlocked the door Felicity stepped outside and to her amazement, she was back inside the Emporium.

Not wanting to face what she just had done again, she quietly tip-toed towards the exit of the Emporium. She opened the door but to her surprise, Mr.Miller was there, wearing a different cape. “Well, well, look who has decided to come back? Did you enjoy your tour?”, he asked. Felicity, shrugged, a bit embarrassed. “You see,” Mr.Milller started, “Guilt is quite common, and people try to not carry it around, especially when they’ve been told before. So what I mean is, you should always try to listen once, and not let the warnings come out of the other ear,” he said, tapping his own.

Nodding, Felicity waved goodbye to Mr.Miller and then walked out of the Emporium. Just as she stepped out, she turned around wanting to discover more. Felicity was breath-took (by his magic). Mr.Miller was gone along with the Emporium and all that was left was an empty land with a banner labelled: ‘TO LET’ Felicity mumbled to herself and planned to visit the next day.

She untied her dog’s leash from a pole and picked it up, like nothing had ever happened. She walked back home without realising that Mr.Miller’s snake was following her. As she closed the door of her house, Felicity shut all of the windows . The kingsnake wrapped itself on the pole of her post box. It watched Felicity closely as she followed her daily routine.

The Emporium of Mysteries- Chapter 1

Sometimes, places are avoided, ignored. The Emporium of Mysteries was one of them.

Even though, the rooms were always decorated merrily with a theme no matter what the weather nor season. Even though when you stepped inside the waft of fresh pastries stabbed your nostrils. Even though if you seeked deep into furniture and decorations you would find a treat especially for you. Even though every room was unique and different, with their own speciality. Even though the inside was breathtaking and the outside could crack your heart, no one would place a foot in the Emporium.

Felicity was quite a quiet girl, but almost always let curiosity get the best of her. On a Monday evening, she was out strolling with her dog when she felt rain trickling down her forehead. She realized it had started raining so she picked up her Golden Poodle and frantically started running towards the direction she came from, when she slipped across the Emporium. Knowing she had nowhere else to go, she pulled the polished handle of the Emporium of Mysteries and obliviously stepped inside.

She looked around the abandoned shop spotting a towel. Because she was soaked to the bone, she snatched the towel away from its counter and wrapped it around her shivering shoulders. Felicity let her fingers gently run through tables, broad vases and tall bookcases. As she was walking across one, she stopped in her tracks. She spotted one bright- green pearl book, titled with glistening gold cursive handwriting. Out of all the other grey, brown and dull black books, this one caught her attention. She carefully pulled it out from in between the other two books, letting them fall on top of eachother. Carrying it like a treasure, she brushed off the dust from a wooden table and placed the book. She took a closer look at it and saw it was a diary with a silver lock. Looking above the diary, she saw a tiny golden key attached to the bookmark inside. She took it, inserting it in the lock and slowly turned it. Felicity opened the book and started flicking through the bronze pages, especially observing the sketches and drawings of machinery and cloth. She took close looks at the dates and read every single word manuscripted inside.

Suddenly she heard a deep voice behind her. Startled, she jumped, turning around still squealing. Her towel landed on the unknown person’s head causing her to only hear muffles. An arm reached up to the person’s head removing the towel, revealing a man with a slate cobra wrapped around his neck- sleeping peacefully.

“Sshhh ”,gently quietened the man placing a finger on Felicity’s lips “Curiosity always gets the best of kids nowadays, doesn’t it?”

If I were summoned by a treasure

If I were summoned to create a treasure…

If I were summoned

To create a treasure,

I would take:

The ear of a

Soon-to-be-extinct bat,

The yodel of an

abominable yeti,

And the pupil of a duck

Peacefully swimming in murky

water.

The sight of

The last shooting star zooming

through the night,

The slow melt of an ice cube

Placed on a table,

And the careful dribbling

Of paint on a canvas.

The smell of

Fresh mint waiting patiently

On a bush,

The scent as you open a

New bleach bottle,

And the whiff of you

Flicking through pages

Of a thick,new book.

The glimmer on a window

From the Leaning Tower of Pisa,

The brittle cracks on dry sand

From a contagious drought,

And a star from a

Meteor shower.

A wing from a pegasus

From Greek mythology,

The tough bricks from

Hadrien’s Wall,

And the bright lights from the

Famous Eiffel Tower.

An unexpected Genie from a

delicate,golden lamp

An opal from an

Underwater seashell,

And the neon skin of a moon jellyfish.

Go and open the door…

Go and open the door…

Go and open the Emerald door,

maybe you’ll feel the gentle

breeze of luck,

Swirling around you,

As clovers bloom through

Bright,wet grass.

Go and open the Teal door,

maybe you’ll hear the

Whimpers of children,

The light drops of rain,

Or the openings of creaky umbrellas.

Go and open the Bronze door,

maybe you’ll hear the cling of shiny coins,

The thud of heavy ropes,

Or the flutter of Colias butterflies.

Go and open the Midnight door,

maybe you’ll see the

blast of lightning,

The shadows of coffins,

Or the looks of skulls covered in blood.

Go and open the Garnet door,

maybe you’ll hear the dribble of blood,

The shimmer of rubies,

Or the burning flicker of fire.

Go and open the Iris door,

maybe you’ll see the

Leak of bright paint,

The spring of flowers,

Or the stroke of your pen as you

correct a mistake.

Evacuee

Cheryl Anderson had been aching to visit her new home. She ran her fingers through everything in her spotless room, discovering the most incredible textures she had never felt before. She had an amazing window view, in order to see from as far as you could possibly imagine. She would spend most of her evening time, after washing her and her mothers clothes from coming back to school,

staring at chickens and cows and horses and windmills spin slowly on hills, from her bedroom window. She would trace out the sunset clouds on her clear window and imagine she could fly and get her family to live with her.Although the truth hurt, there was nothing she could do  about it.Her room looked clean but smelled absolutely atrocious because it had not been used nor cleaned for 4 years straight. She would go downstairs most of the time before leaving to school, and ask her new mother next door for her window key in order to unlock it.

After making and eating breakfast for herself, Miss Levine and Carol, she would walk down the streets with Carol to get to school early. She had studied writing and experienced reading so in school, was able to complete any work that was assigned.Although she had really bad eyesight and sat at the back row of her classroom, she was determined for it not to stop her from achieving all her classes. She had needed to wear glasses from time to time, but at least it was for the better. She began to fit in and developed friends because of her high levels in school. She played with her younger sister and neighbour, and would sometimes walk to school with her. They would play games at break time and would sit next to each other in class. They would most of the times whisper and giggle in classes and pass notes when they needed help. She would pack her gas mask for emergencies and an extra for her sister. She developed even more friends and she had been living what seemed like seemed like her dream life.

Just like she had got used to doing every night, Cheryl spent 5 minutes writing down her own stories in a book Miss Levine had lent to her.She kept her window open as well for fresh air.She had only just finished her new tale and closed book, placed it on her nearby drawer. She got out of her blankets in her brown nightie to close her window. She leaned in her windowsill, but spotted something move near the fountain outside. She could swear it wasn’t her imagination! She’d identified that the thing moving outside was Miss Levine! She turned back a corner to the back house.Cheryl rushed downstairs to Miss Levine’s room, quietly making sure Carol hadn’t woken up, for a better view. She was opening up the back house gate with shiny silver keys. Why was she out there so late. She heard a door opening noise behind her.Cheryl quickly ducked beneath the bed and saw Carol walk downstairs. What was going on?

Cheryl sneakily followed Carol to the backhouse, hiding behind every object in sight whenever she turned around. It seemed like both Miss Levine and Carol were in this, what a coincidence. They got to the back house, Carol leading the way by candle light.Cheryl crawled inside, and before doing anything else, hid behind a plant where she could see what was going on.Miss Levine was carrying a bottle of warm milk.Carol whispered something in her ear.Too much was going on at the same time.Cheryl thought it was the moment to speak up. “What is going on!”, she demanded.Miss Levine sighed, but they were all interrupted by the sound of a baby crying.Suddenly it all made sense. The baby bottle, the crying, the sneaking out. “Do you have a baby here that you never told me about?!” Cheryl spoke even louder this time. Carol backed out the gate and was out of sight.Miss Levine looked worried once, but exchanged more of a calm look later. “Look, we were meant to explain all of this to you tomorrow morning, none of this should’ve happened.”,Miss Levine explained .Suddenly, Carol popped up behind her.She was carrying something inside a towel, something moving. “Me and Carol have had her for quite a while now, to be honest. Her names’s Felicity.” Then, she gently whispered to her, “Felicity, meet Cheryl”

In the room of…

I stood in the room of plants,                                                                                                                                                                          I stood in the room of  ear piercing violins and

as vivid vines squirmed across walls, slowly twirling                                                                                                                                 calm rhythmic drums.

spinning like a hypnotized snake.

I stood in the room of horror,                                                                                                                                                                         I stood in the room of autumn leaves,

as tall trees whistled and a witch’s brew grumbled.                                                                                                                                   as they gently fall down like bees pollinating flowers

I stood in the room of frost,                                                                                                                                                                             I entered the room of finality,

as icicles hung above me as sharp as a saber toothed                                                                                                                                and abruptly turned into ashy smoke.

tiger’s jagged teeth.

WTSF Chapter 4

The incoming week, it snowed hard. Snow camouflaged every building in sight; snow poured on cars and vehicles, as if it were glazing a cake in frost white icing; snow was absolutely everywhere, like they lived in a cotton wonderland. This was like a never ending supply of snow, it was enough to make the world’s biggest snowman! School was now shut down just like every other place. They had to stay inside day after day, her parents must’ve been now worried about her. It would be impossible to find Phoenix now. It wasn’ even winter yet though! Miss Levine was panicking that if the snow didn’t end soon, they would be trapped inside forever, or that Carol and her would catch colds and fevers.

However, this entire time she could’ve been finding Phoenix. Anymore time wasted, by time she’d actually find Phoenix, the cub would’ve been dead. Afterall, she was a tiny little puppy, but very ferocious, she’d probably escaped by now. Phoenix had nowhere to go, nowhere to sleep and nothing to eat. But if she’d want to find her, her first step was, she’d have to explore the city way more. At Least all those days of returning home with sore feet after a never-ending journey had paid off.She knew half of the city, now she’d just had to know the way to the half.

Inside, she’d known herself as safe and secure but outside she’d see herself struggling through pounds of snow.  The snow grasped onto her wet boots making her sink down below as if she were forced to step in quicksand. She searched up and down, left and right but nothing.Just a frosty, plain frame. It seemed like she was just staring at a blank wall for how clear the snow was. She thought she’d heard a howl, but to her mistake her only response was the deadly -27.2℃ whisper of wind.

She marched all the way to Mr and Mrs Smith’s (Jade’s Parents) little wooden hut, just two roads away from the Everglade forest. She stopped on their wooly entrance carpet and knocked 3 times. They had a big, thick red door, so when leaned in her ear to listen for a reply, all she heard were muffled mumbles. She absolutely couldn’t make out what they were saying, so she knocked again. This time the door opened smoothly but slow, and when she popped her head inside the dark house no one was there. But if no one was there, who’d opened the door? She carefully stepped inside to recheck. Again, no one was there. Then, suddenly, the lights flashed on and off and again on. She could hear the swift movements of something brushing the floor. All of a sudden, Mrs Smith came out of a pitch-black corridor, with a bronze broom. “ Oh sorry, I thought I’d unlocked the door back then, come in, come in, welcome”, She said enthusiastically.

Cheryl was sweeped onto a couch, to see a bowl of certain fruits she’d never seen before. “Thank you Mrs Smith. You’ve a really clean house . But also, excuse me but do you happen to know where Jade is please?” She asked politely. It took her a minute to answer.“ Well, she did say she was leaving to go to the park, remember the one near your school, well that’s it.”She answered. “ Ok then, thank you, that’s where I’m heading then” replied Cheryl. She got up and left the house, closing the mighty door behind her slowly. She skipped all the way to her school park, to see it empty, with only a rusty swing swinging side to side. She sighed heavily.Would she ever see Phoenix again?

Well you see, this is just a long and lost memory. I never saw Phoenix again, but did hear news about her. She later died when I turned 17 but it didn’t bother me much. I knew trouble was seeking for her and there’s her ending. I was twelve back then, a soft little kid like a trembling, feared mouse. I now work here in an office, being an evacuee did not suit me.  Just when I turned 23, I got my own house bigger than Miss Levine’s. Carol caught some sort of illness and died too when she turned 15. Well not everyone gets a happy ending. I’m also training to make medicines and cures for both animals and humans, so I can never lose anyone in my life any more. Jade moved away to some other country with her parents, and Miss Levine still weeps and sniffs on about how Carol was her precious little girl, even though she’s 95. She’ll die soon too if she’s not careful. I didn’t get to see my parents anymore, but they were older than Miss Levine so they probably died too. I never heard from any of my classmates, but since I’m grown up now, I can do whatever I want. I didn’t want to get another pet, because I knew what was coming for me. All of my family’s stories turned upside down, but mine however, ends differently.
