I wore the blue mask and saw
bubblegum ice cream melting in the earth’s core,
the teacher’s folder waiting patiently for work to be put in it
and a large blue whale obliterating every other sea creature.
I wore the green mask and saw
a spiky cactus ready for action,
the pastel mint sea glimmering on the sand
and the rough chair swinging with the reading person on it.
I wore the white mask and saw
a pair of turtle doves singing in the opera, louder than ever,
the polystyrene squeaking and bursting everybody’s ears
and a sheet of paper being scribbled on by a minuscule toddler.
I wore the yellow mask and saw
a summer sunflower singing amongst the grass,
the hundreds of grains of sand drifting away with the summer breeze
and a creepy cat’s eyes on a dark, spooky night shining in the lamp post’s light.
I wore the pink mask and saw
a blossom tree swaying in the garden, which was full of petals,
the elegant shrimps flipping royally in the cold ocean
and an empty pencil case ready for good use.
I wore the red mask and saw
a single, solitary rasher of warm bacon,
the wild fire roaring in the magical forest
and a jolly Christmas card with its stamp on, ready for posting.
I wore the orange mask and saw
a stripe of mustard from the rainbow up high in the track-filled sky,
the Halloween pumpkin scarcely cut out and placed on the front door
and a jar of marmalade in the Brown’s kitchen saying Paddington’s marmalade, Do not touch!
I wore the brown mask and saw
a spiky conker shell lying on the forest floor,
the best bar of Wonka chocolate placed on the kitchen table
and tree bark filled with sticky sap, untouched.
I put on the black mask and saw
a calculator working out maths sums for the intelligent children,
the car tyre going over a pot hole and getting a puncture
and a sorrowful crow stealing food from the cafe.
