Suddenly, Buddy came panting, tripping over his heels; he had finally come back to his rightful owners!
“Buddy! Naughty boy!” Ruby rebuked. Buddy whined, then turned around and started wagging his tail at something in the distance. Something was rustling in the bushes; Leo skidded back at the sound. Ruby rushed over and gestured for Leo to join her.
Leo shook his head vigorously and whined, “Oh, no! You are not getting me in another bad situation! I’ve had enough, we need to build a camp for the night, it’s getting dark!”
“Don’t be such a baby! Follow me!” Ruby replied. Annoyed, Leo crossed his arms and followed his sister, who was brushing away the leaves. Laying there, feathers scarlet red, was a baby phoenix, who sneezed out ashes all over Ruby. “Aww! What a sweetheart!” Cautiously, Ruby lifted him in the palm of her hands, the baby giggling at her and nudging her arm for tickles. “Leo, isn’t he amazing? Leo? LEO?” She realised her brother had run away at the sight, and she found him concealed behind a tree. “This is why I always win at hide-and-seek: you just hide behind trees.
Leo screamed, “Get the beast away from me!” The phoenix let out a huge burp, and fire burst out his nostrils, like a volcano
“Pardon you! I’m gonna call you Ash!” Ruby said kindly.
“We’re naming the beast now?” Leo yelled to his sister. Ash growled, and snuggled into Ruby.
“Oh, shush, Leo!” Suddenly, a ferocious bird swept down from the sky, his claws like coat hangers, ready to swallow Ash in one gulp. Until a man wearing explorer’s clothes snatched the bird and punched him.
“Why, hello children. What on Earth are you doing in The Wilders?” spoke the man, with a smile like the crescent moon.
“Phew! A human being! I can finally talk to someone! So, now may you please take us to the way out of this godforsaken place!” Leo interrogated the man, but he just laughed.
“There is no way out! I’ve been here for fourteen years now!” the man informed Leo.
“What?”
“I’m William Scott by the way! I’m the best explorer of all time, look me up on Google.”
“Pleasure to meet you. I’m Leo and this is my…unique sister: Ruby,” Leo grinned, joyous to find that someone was on the island. The only thing was that Ruby didn’t trust this ‘William Scott’ one bit. He had something about his copper-colour eyes that she just didn’t trust, like they were faking something. He tickled Buddy, who didn’t seem to mind, even though he hates it when strangers play with him.
“What have you got there?” William Scott asked with a smile, noticing a red blur in Ruby’s hand.
Ruby stuck her tongue out at him and said, “It’s none of your business!”
Mr Scott told her, “It can’t be that bad!” He peered over her shoulder and was about to say something, but it never came out. He stood there, stunned. “Is that a baby phoenix? Ruby, if that is your name, this is an incredible discovery! I thought they were extinct but…I just can’t believe it,” he gasped, and paused for second, pondering for a moment. “How about you come to my camp for the night? It’s getting dark outside, and it’s terribly dangerous and cold out here.”
“We’re fine on our own, thank you,” Ruby responded promptly.
Leo kicked her and said, “Ruby! You silly girl! Of course, we would love to come, Mr Scott.” William beamed, grabbing them by the arm. Ash looked at Ruby with fear rubbed all over his face: they both didn’t trust this.
At the camp, William Scott took them to a colossal tent, filled with fellow explorers, and the twins noticed a monkey sitting on a table.
“Hello, boy!” Ruby called, stroking its fur gently, but to her surprise the monkey slapped her hand away.
“Oi! Don’t you touch me!” the monkey said to everyone’s astonishment.
“Ahh! You talk!” Leo shrieked.
“What are you gawping at? Ain’t you ever seen a talking monkey before?” the monkey, whose name was Bobo, snapped.
“Sorry.”
“This is Bobo, my noble companion!” William Scott answered.
Hours passed. Ruby and Leo lay in their beds, staring at the ceiling, until Leo drifted off. Ruby was wide awake though. She didn’t even flinch. Scaring the life out of her, Bobo tapped her on the shoulder.
“Bobo, what are you-”
“There’s something you must see!” Bobo interrupted seriously. Buddy and Ash trailed behind the pair, when Bobo unleashed a secret vault, that was full of cages. They all had about five animals in. Captured animals. Ruby gasped at the horrific sight, as animals whimpered and screeched.
“What is this?” Ruby sobbed, as silver tears feel down her cheeks. The pair of pets (Buddy and Ash) were as shocked as Ruby was.
“It’s William. He came on this island to capture all the incredible animals, including me. It’s for scientific research, so that he can win some stupid award or something. He’s cruel, beats us. He makes us race each other for entertainment, and then keeps us locked up the rest of the time. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t tell you this, but he wants to steal Ash, make him a slave,” Bobo burst out, like it had all been piling up inside him for forever.
“Well, then I guess we must get out of here. With you. And all of these animals: every bird, every mouse, every crazy and amazing creature, big to small,” Ruby told Bobo.
Bobo sighed and said, “Oh, Ruby. You have a heart of gold, don’t you? I just don’t see how this will work!”
“Well, I guess you’re going to find out!”
The four sprinted back to the camp, right up to Leo. Ruby shook him from side to side, making him awake from his deep slumber.
“What was that for?” Leo moaned.
“Leo, we must get out of here.”
“What, why? William’s been so kind to us!”
“I know, but he isn’t to animals. We must get out of here and save them all.”
“Ruby I-”
“What did Mum always say? Well, that ‘to do the right thing is the best thing, even if it’s hard.’ Come on, Leo! For once in your life, be brave!”
“Okay, I’ll do it. I just don’t understand how,” Leo replied.
“Maybe this big, strong man will help?” asked Bobo, the twins turning around to find that it was none other than their uncle!
“Captain Storm-Breaker!” Ruby cried with joy.
