The boy

She twirled around and threw a random punch; it hit nothing but air. ‘Who’s there?’ Threatened Joan.

Out of the shadows crept a person, a small boy, he looked kind of lost. He had blonde hair and navy blue glasses. ‘Who are you.’ Asked Joan, softer.

‘Jacob.’ Answered the boy.

‘Jacob who?’

‘Jacob.’

‘Ok, Jacob where did you come from.’

‘This was my village but the storm destroyed it.’

‘Oh.’ ‘Why don’t you come inside and stay in the warmth,’ offered Joan.

As soon as they stepped inside the wrecked ship Jacob was as lively as ever and kept asking questions.

What’s your name?; how old are you?; how did you get here?

‘Just shu-t, mmh quieten down.’ They sat in silence for the rest of the journey. Until Jacob asked why was she alone.

‘I don’t know.’ ‘All I know is that the captain thinks I’m not good enough to help; I don’t need the pointless captain, I endeavoured on this journey to travel the lands not be commanded to stay at the ship and comfort small boys.’

Jacob reacted as if it didn’t hurt but Joan could tell it did.

‘Sorry.’ ‘I am just a bit annoyed.’

Silence remained for the rest of the time and the occasional squark of a bird could be heard. Joan sat next to Jacob wondering what the captain said.
