The book of mischief prologue and chapter one

The twisted, black clouds swept across the lonely emporium. It was one of the places no one ever went. Even though the big windows glistened and was home to stunning, quality books and colourful, fascinating toys, the bitter, rusty door refused to let anyone in. No one dared glimpsed at the door more than once until Maddie came along.

Maddie was an inquisitive girl who loved to discover. One evening, the stars shimmered above the silver clouds and she was taking a stroll down lonely road. The emporium was unique this night. On the windows, there was no dust. It looked like they had cleaned the shop! But Maddie didn’t care. She stepped inside cautiously.

Everywhere Maddie gazed, it was crowded with extraordinary magical things and clocks with more than two hands. Despite all these marvellous items, there was one thing that intrigued Maddie the most. There was a grand wooden lectern holding a wide, leathery book. The smell of fresh baked bread drifted into her nose. She seized the book and patted it to get the dirt off. When she opened it, incredible sparks flew out and peculiar letters moved around.

Just then, Maddie startled. An old man came dashing out the cherry coloured curtains. He said, “I see you have found the book of mischief!” He exclaimed to Maddie. She looked at the man. Some coal-black crows perching on the desk chock their heads. What did Maddie do?
