Story Extract~ Chapter 4- Into the Jungle…

I push branches out of my way and gaze at my surroundings. Palm trees seem to float overhead and coconuts roll down wild-flower filled meadows. Blades of grass brush my ankles and they begin itching, turning a crimson-red. I shiver as a slight breeze shocks me and drives through my skull, breaking down into a shudder down my spine. My bones twitch and suddenly something whizzes by and I stumble back, falling into something damp; wait not damp: super wet. I glance around and spot behind me something dashing around right into the deepest part of the jungle. I hop back up and break into a chase for this mysterious creature that seems unknown to me, when I know most species that exist as of reading most non-fiction books about every animal!  My jog makes a sudden transform into a run and then I begin to sprint. The wind blows in my face, throwing strands of my hair in my eyes and I fall, grazing my knee. It isn’t going to stop me from finding this creature though! I hurriedly bounce up again and carry on my chase.

After several minutes, I find a dead end; sighing,I slump down onto the floor and think. Think, Rune, think!  Then, it comes to me. I leap up and take a few steps back. I break into action and sprint, sprint and sprint all my life. I push off my right foot and jump, super high, over the climbing bushes. I glance around but can’t spy the  animal anywhere. My eyes begin to bubble with droplets of water and they’re about to burst when I see movement. I take in a large gulp of fresh hair and sneak towards the sound. It’s a buzzing sort of noise, like a bumble bee, and then, I see it. A fuzzy, sky-blue creature with its fangs bare, flashing them like the shiny edges of a window frame. I take a step closer and now I can view it more clearly. Its wings look like glimmering-glass windows and its eyes are perfectly round with brown speckles. I examine it a bit more and notice it’s tail. It’s the shape of a raccoon’s tail but is pink, blue and tipped with orange. This new creature is astounding: beautiful.

After a few seconds, I realise what needs to be done. This cool, very cool, creature needs a name! I release thoughts into my mind but most of them sound babyish and unoriginal: blue-fly, raccoon-dragon, mystic-tail, sky-scare and then I think of the most amazing name: Flutter-Dragon.  Fantastic! I smile and realise now how important my life is. I discovered a new species. I went on an adventure in a JUNGLE! Who else has the opportunity to do that in their lifetime? Wow, I’m really, truly lucky. Just like this Flutter-Dragon which I’m releasing back to the wild (I have a picture to prove I have discovered it). Today was the best day of my life.
