The Foxamander. Chapter 3

Foxamander continued…

Chapter 3

One week later and we are huddled in my room. We sit quietly, slowly sipping our tea (my favourite drink). Outside the wind still howling but this time louder than a wolf. Inside the fire is alight and is constantly providing us with warmth and light. However, Violet is planning something. “Benny, please I’m serious!” Not again, I think. “I know where it lives!”

Apparently, Violet spent days in the old warehouse, kept a close eye on the beach and searched the entirety of the town. She states to have seen a slimy blue substance on the walls of the warehouse; the same texture of the slime the foxamander produces, just a slightly different colour.

I lock the museum door and double check that all the windows are tightly closed. I had already turned the lights off and grabbed a torch from the storage room on the second floor. The cool, eerie mist rests near the seafront, slowly creeping towards the town. It’s dangerous outside at this time. For violet that just seems to make her even more confident than she already is. I know that she can’t be left alone. She’s stubborn, overconfident and yet I follow her orders as if I have to. Carefully, we make our way along the road to the warehouse.

I didn’t believe Violet, however, there is a clear trail of slime; the trail led to the window of the second floor control room. “ Come on Benny! Let’s seize the moment!” I didn’t want to seize anything but again I have the feeling that we are heading into trouble.

The warehouse is dark. Very dark. One hundred different smells of rotten fish, seaweed and childrens bones flood the room. Old, rusty machinery reflects the torchlight. My heart beats heavily as we edge forwards, I glance side to side. Just as I think nothing is there, Violet finds it. Sitting in a cargo container, a cold scaly egg. We both stare in awe. The foxamander has an egg…

At this moment, guilt stabs my chest. I know we should not have come here. “ We need to go, now!” I tell Violet, pointing at the entrance. I go to open the door but something is blocking the way. Something big and scaly, cold and furry. I point my torch at the thing, it was indeed the foxamander! Violet charges forward; I run back…
