Chapter 4
Chapter 4
I start to run but there’s nowhere to hide. The egg illuminates and I notice that it’s covered in shiny white pearls. Then violet starts talking in a low calming voice. “Its OK” she says stepping forward. I can tell she is trying to act brave to try and hide her fear.
The seadragonamander stops and tilts his head to the side. Its eyes, which are as green as emeralds, are fixed on us. “We’re not going to hurt you or egg. We will protect you.” Violet holds out her hands to show the seadragonamander she’s not going to hurt them. It seems to be listening. It gives a low scratch; the spikes on its back fold down. It’s working. Violet is talking to the catamander and its working.
“Let’s go now,” Violet says. We walk past the seadragonamander. Its green eyes lock with mine in them i can see the depths of the ocean, colorful coral in the bottom of the sea and the glitter of so many tiny, golden sparks of life. It bows its head as we walk past safely.
Outside, I take a deep breath and sigh with relief. Inside, the seadragonamander protects its egg in the nest.
The mist is cleared the moon is shining down on the beach lighting up the crystal clear waters. All is still. We walk back towards the promenade and talk. No one must find the cave. NO one must find the seadragonamander and its egg. Violet comes up with an idea-pretend there was a coastal erosion and report it to the council. Get signs up banning people from coming on the beach and then we can-i cut her off by saying “OK, ok i get what trying to say.”
By the time we are walking through the town, it is awakening. The sun is rising above the sea. The people are putting up there stalls. Bob is putting out deck chairs-beacause it looks like it’s a nice day today-He waves to us with a cheery grin. Barry’s OH MY COD! Fish and chip shop has opened, I can smell frying as i walk past. As we got to my shop the morning traffic has begun. Cars drift past us on the way to the new theme park which has the best rides in.
I fiddle with the keys and push the door open. Inside, it is peaceful and quite. Soon it is going to be packed.
As i put the sign outside, my heart hurts, my mind races. Will the seadragonamander’s egg hatch safely? Will we be able to keep them safe?
Violet wanders off to look at ‘beachcombing showcase’ I stand next to her and she points at fragments of sea glass. And she has found some that are red. Red, speckled with green. We lock eyes thinking the same thing.
All day violet has been reading ancient logs and records. She finds a captains log written in 1656 It is the story of a pirates treasure hunt.
