Flamemander Chapter 4

Chapter 4
I get ready to run even though my brain knew I was not going anywhere, I gaze at the egg pondering what to do. I notice that the egg looks like a flame in a warm fire place with tiny freckles of gold hidden in the ridged cracks of the it. I start to worry hoping Wilbur has a way out of here. It’s then Wilbur starts talking trying to use his calmest voice which sounds hard as he is a very energetic person, “It’s okay we are here to be friends.” he says, slowly backing towards me. I can hear in his quivering voice that Wilbur is scared but trying to hide it.

The flamemander pauses and tilts its head, its scales turning blue, Its aqua eyes fixed on us, “We are not here to hurt you.” whispers Wilbur. The flamemander blinks then bows down. We slip past it and manage to stroke it as we go past, we wave goodbye and sneak into the shadows.

Outside, the mist clears and the sun starts to rise. We stroll across the beach Wilbur running ahead, my head racing to try and keep up with all the ideas that he was shouting at me. I felt the warm sands soaking into my feet and the waves slipping in-between my toes. Today might end up being a lovely day! Even if I did not agree with Wilbur’s ideas we both agree that we need to keep the flamemander safe. How will we stop people finding the nest? What will we do if someone finds the nest? Will there be a fight for the egg?

By the time we are off the beach and in town, it is 10 O’clock, the sun high in the sky. Billy unlocks the door to Billie’s bits and bobs, turning around the sign that once said Closed to Welcome in. He sets out all of his items for stock and puts his ice cream stall outside. He shouts, “up early aren’t you?” we just wave back. Mrs Cook pulls down the shutters of Chips-on-Sea. She sets out some deck chairs and table outside, preparing for a busy day. We watch as the shop fronts fill up with colourful deck chair; open signs; and spruce wood tables.

I open the door to my little basement and jump onto my arm chair feeling absolutely shattered, unlike Wilbur who was stood up muttering more ideas. We turn on the heaters and I sit down to relax well Wilbur raids the shelf of lost items.

For the rest of the day we sit in silence, until Wilbur who just finished the lost book he found, blurted out, “Read this page!” I pick it up and read. In 1978 the captain of the legendary Braveheart found a fiery red rock spotted with gold, they took it on board. The next night the rock was broken in half and empty. They found a monster hidden on the ship submerged in fire, by the time morning broke the ship had brunt down. Sailors now have a promise to capture any creature of this kind. I look at Wilbur worried.
