ww2 evacuee
I went on the train ma, I saw you waving and I held back a tear or 2. I ate your hershey’s bar on the train. The cold breeze of the country made me very very cold.
I was staying at a small ranch with a house, barn and a tiny stable for the horses. There was a man,a woman, a boy the same age as me and they had an old man. They had a dog who was a golden retriever. I packed my things in the barn with the farm animals. It was scary at first but I got used to the cows and chickens.
It was built handmade with wood and had a dining room, kitchen, master bedroom, bathroom and the son’s bedroom. The old man stayed in their shed out in the back.
One of the horses liked me. It was amazing when I rode it. The father let me ride the big one. I called it kieran.
There was a local town about half a mile from there. I travelled alone to get used to it. The woman gave me an apple and some bread and £1 to spend. I walked into town. They had the usual but i went into the general store and bought a bag of candies for 20p. I kept the rest of the money under my pillow. The next day I went to the town again and then I bought a book to read. I climbed on the building with the ladder and I saw other kids up there but I left them alone.
I went to a small school with 5 seats. We were mainly taught on Fridays and only learnt how to cook and clean.
I hope when the war ends you and pa pick me up again. I got your letter and I will write to you tomorrow.
-Your son, John.
