The Runaway

                                                                                Chapter 4

The next day, tears ran through their eyes not knowing what we should do. It rained and rained and rained, soon enough rain flooded across the streets, the pathways and the villages. As Edward and his family looked into the sky it was like the world was falling apart but then he knew it was time to let his little brother know. He slowly crept up to his bedroom and found him sitting on his bed crying and struggling to catch his breath. Edward said to him, “What happened?”

His brother said, “I knew.” Edward was shocked but that didn’t matter. The thing that was important was that they needed to find Jacob.

Edward couldn’t wait any longer and this meant he had to do something and find his best friend Jacob and stop him from telling anyone. Time was ticking and this meant that if they didn’t find him in time then there was no way to protect his long lost brother John. He went outside and suddenly the rain stopped and the sun came gleaming out, it was like his prayers were answered so he went to look in the deafening villages, hoping.

He stopped at Mrs Jeanette’s house who knew everything in the village and what happened within the village. He asked if she had seen Jacob. She simply replied with no but said she can find a person who might know and called a rumonger, the rumonger came in and went into the living room, a few minutes later, the so-called Rumonger was dancing around and doing crazy spells, but in the meantime Edward had a little walk around the house and surely said to Edward “What are you doing! Don’t go near the kitchen you little rascal!” That sent a chill down Edward’s spine and he was sure to not do it again. Edward then built up the courage to talk to Mrs Jeanette about whether she had seen Jacob snooping or hiding around here but in an angry, dark voice she screamed “NO!” slamming the door behind her back.

In the end, the rumormonger said there was no rumor and Mrs Jeanette kicked me and him out of the house and shouted. “Don’t ever come back here!” Edward then walked away with no hope in him and sat by a church and wondered if his best friend wasn’t even his friend at all. It was like a prayer came to him because in his mind he thought that Jacob would come back and help me and him because that’s what best friends do, right? How would I explain it to John and Mum?

This all happened over 87 years ago when the city had to be evacuated and people had to go to the countryside because of the war. Then Jacob returned. I’m so happy because that’s what friends do. He got over his fear and apologized to John and Mum.

They are all gone now. John was eventually caught and his punishment was that he needed to fight in the war in 1945 and eventually he passed away with 2 gunshots in the heart and one to the head. It was very devastating when we heard it. I still miss his stories he used to tell me about his time in the war and how he escaped, it was very exciting that time. One day I went home and received news from my Mum that Jacob was caught stealing and ended up getting executed, he was the best friend anyone could ask for.
