Chapter 2 & 3

Chapter 2

Jasmine eyeballed in disgust as the ground slipped towards them by every second. They were dropping downwards, to an ever-so sandy place. Captain Kerai punched every button she could find, trying to lift the Lightshadow with the rest of her limbs. Beside the shivering girl was Daisy, hopping on one leg as she struggled with a magic sky-vamp, tearing open the already humongous hole. Its fearsome fangs ripped apart the remaining strips of cloth – like a ravenous cheetah, ready to eat its prey.

With a mighty splash, the sky-ship crashed down, swimming in a tadpole-infested oasis. Daisy had won by forfeit, the monster had flown away. Jasmine jumped out of the airship to see the exotic sight. She glared at many things: the afternoon sun glimmering in the pool of baby frogs, the salt-like grains of sand becoming one with the wind and the double-hump camels slumping tiredly, like a teenager limping out of bed, towards a source of water.

Daisy began to stare at the odd desert. Beside her, there would’ve been fountains with water gushing into people’s mouths. Where the camels rested, there would’ve been a stable of horses. Far ahead, there were cacti, ready to sting their predators. The desolate land might’ve been crowded with cowboys and cowgirls. But now it was just an abandoned sandland as the clouds cackled across the sky. The sun began to set majestically as tumbleweed rolled on the sand.

Half an hour later, the girls pulled the Lightshadow out of the water and sat there – all alone. The rest of the crew went searching for provisions for the ship and themselves, leaving the siblings, who prepared a shelter. Jasmine and Daisy found spare planks of wood and began to make their safe house. The pearly moon illuminated the night. It was then that they saw a strange shadow.

Chapter 3

Something scuttled on the skyship beside them! Jasmine, whose palms started to sweat, hid in the now completed shelter but Daisy clambered onto the Lightshadow and searched for the mysterious figure. She could see a wing, it flapped, just near the mast. It was incredibly tiny and had a sharp beak. It suddenly ran towards her.

“It’s a gryphon – a baby one!” she explained. “But it’s wounded.”

Daisy, who had her thinking face on, lifted its leg and put it on her lap.

“It probably tripped in the wind.”

The gryphonlet whimpered as the icy wind whistled through the sky. Jasmine slipped away to get a fire blanket, hoping that its parents would look at the bright side – they’d saved their baby! Daisy wrapped a bandage around its ankle, wishing for an approval from Captain Kerai.

Lightshadow – Prologue & Chapter 1

Prologue

You may have rocketed through the limitless pillow-like clouds as you admired the view from the heights of a speedy sky-ship. You probably remember when you soared above the flourishing flowers blooming in the fields and the sun beaming at your face, shining like a luminous phoenix feather glistening in the night. When you flew carelessly – finally escaping your daily cage that kept you stuck in the same, dreaded routine.

You might recall your smile on that marvellous ship whilst the wind brushed past your ears, having a relaxing holiday without any annoying chatter. You must’ve seen the beautiful bluebirds fluttering their wings like eyelashes softly skimming each other.

However, life on a skyship that tosses and turns in the thunder isn’t as fun. The lightning will pierce through the charcoal sky, almost slicing your sky-ship in half! When the pitch runs out and you drop down, crashing crazily to the ground.

Many explorers said that they’d encountered the most spine-chilling sky-vamps. Ones with menacing, brooded capes, ferocious fangs and dark, eagle-like eyes glaring into your heart like a mutant stethoscope. That’s when a sky-ship ride gets tough…

Chapter 1

Jasmine stumbled towards the safety pole, her eyes burning with salt-filled tears. She gasped for air as thunder cackled through the sky-ship. She stared at her elder sister – Daisy – confused as to why she was grinning with delight when the air ship was somersaulting across the ebony sky. After a month of adventuring, they assumed that they would be rocketing above The Forbidden Woods but with thunder and lightning slicing the sky, they couldn’t do anything.

In the blink of an eye, blood splattered. The sky-vamps had arrived! Absolutely terrified, Jasmine saw a handful of them glide across the gritty clouds as 3 pairs of soulless eyes headed towards The Lightshadow. Captain Kerai spun the wheel like a Catherine Wheel, scarcely avoiding the perilous blood-suckers.

For a few minutes, the vampires had disguised themselves between the endless clouds, waiting for the captain to steer away. Hail bashed against the sky ship as Daisy looked through the binoscope. It showed nothing. Fog blocked their way.                                                                                                                                  “Watch out!” Captain Kerai yelled through the mega speakers.

A few seconds later, the Lightshadow shot down like a bullet, the super helium slowly seeped through the ‘indestructible’ balloon. They dropped below the inky clouds, all from a hole, made from the finest fangs of a sky-vamp. The sisters searched for the evil troublemakers. But where were they now?

Chapter 4-(EXTRACT)

Edging towards the portal (the dump), Daisy heard the galloping of hooves and the firing of pistols. It was them, Lord Adil’s huntsmen. Dragging itself sluggishly, the tired phoenix licked its wounded wing, moaned moodily and kept on sliding towards ‘Ye Olde Dump’.
Rusty, old gates groaned with slight stains of red paint starting to peel, looking like it was going to collapse. Daisy, whose lungs were filled with too much air, focused on the things beyond the gate. Behind the bars, a blinding light beamed through the piles of rubbish, like a glowing galaxy, spinning like a washing machine. Then it all got dark; the rubble disintegrated into a billion fluttering butterflies; the world stretched into a new fantasy, pulling everything into the junkyard: trees; glittering stars; everything…

The Monsterous Jungle-Beast

Sun-shone, the terrifying tiger rests peacefully.

Its soul-starers are like deep black holes lost in the middle of space.

Its tongue is as wide as an Indian elephant’s ears.

Stretching its prowling paws,

The tired tiger yawns,

opening its icy eyes.

Endless tunnels picking up every sound

And tooth-like claws that scrape the ground.

It growls, purrs and waits

for its prey…

WHY dragons?!

Dear Diary,

Today I had the most extraordinary experience! I woke up early today because me and my family were going on a day trip to the volcanoes! You can tell I was very excited.

When my mum told me to wake up I shot out of bed, ready for lava (I like lava and volcanoes). The journey went on forever, but my head was processing a fantasy (so I was entertained). When we arrived, my eyes bulged out of my head. It looked as amazing as my dreams.

We went near the tourist attractions and took loads of pictures of the lava – erupting mountain first. They rumbled and shook like they were going to erupt. Then, the most surprising thing happened. The lava and rocks crumbled and transformed into a ginormous volcano dragon! I almost fainted, but I had to take a photo of this. I stood up and…’flash’, it had appeared on my camera.

Everyone gathered around the dragon, murmuring and whispering, but I climbed over the fence and my family stood there, shocked. The dragon was as fiery as Australia and the igneous rocks burned bright. Then more volcanoes transformed. They looked just like the other dragon: fiery; dusty black; and smoky.

After I shook my family back to reality, we left and finally reached home. I hope we never talk about this ever!

Chapter 1 – Jasmine’s Adventure Starts

Jasmine had always thought about that old, abandoned building but her mother had given her a precaution about the Emporium. One frosty Friday, her mum told her to buy some milk for her coffee at Mr Roger’s shop on Marsh Lane. As she walked along the pavement, her eyes caught a glimpse of the Emporium. The door was half locked and her friend taught her how to open a locked door. She grabbed her hair pin and twisted it inside the keyhole. The door was open and with the milk a distant memory, she stepped inside.

In each and every spot there was something amazing waiting for her to look at them. She heard the chirp of a feathery phoenix tweeting like a small child stranded on a deserted island and the voice of a perfectly designed talking mirror! She smelt the strong fragrance from a sweet perfume that she hadn’t seen before and the essence of Scottish, scarlet strawberries. She saw a stuffed cat that looked as soft as a bed of fur, a broken watch covered in diamonds and an Iphone 15 that wasn’t even made yet! (Well someone probably made it for themselves.) But the only thing that fascinated Jasmine was a shiny hardback book. When she opened the book, the pictures glowed, the letters burned a fiery red and the pages gleamed like a successful student’s face, ready to get a job.

“What are you doin’, sneakin’ in and lookin’ at me book of curiosity?” spat a vicious voice. Jasmine gulped, pushed the book away and stepped back to look at the owner. He was an ancient-looking man whose hair was as grey as a wolf’s furry coat. Crawling up the man’s back was a black cat. It purred furiously, like it was a sign to not open that book…

Treasure Maker

If I were called

to create a treasure,

I would take:

The sound of

A plate smashing on the hard kitchen floor,

A brutal beast growling under your bed

And the throaty bark from a badly behaved bulldog echoing down Jethro Street.

The touch of

A grain of sand from the ground of Blackpool Beach,

The cold air from Neptune

And the burning fire from the Sun dripping like lava boiling out of Mt. Vesuvius.

The scent of

Freshly baked cookies marching out of the hot sauna,

The sweet smell of strawberries floating in the air, leaking from the Jo Malone candle

And a twirling tulip twisting like a pretty ballerina.

The taste of

A cheeky chocolate cake made with your grandmother’s love,

A silly slice of cheesy pizza made in the fireplaces of Italy

And the sour drop of lemon squeezing onto your tongue.

The sight of

My friends supporting me through every tough challenge,

My hard work being praised with a little sticker at the bottom of the page

And a sausage dog with cute eyes sitting on my doorstep.

Open the Magical Doors…

Go and open the gleaming gold door,

maybe you’ll see a happy glow reflecting off your face,

a shiny trophy smiling whilst being polished

or stars twinkling in the sky like glitter falling into your eyes.

Go and open the scarlet door,

maybe there is a fierce fire growing as fast as a teenager with growing pain,

a farmer’s field full of sweet strawberries

or a pool of boiling blood from the bodies of the kind people who fought for their country.

Go and open the azure door,

maybe you’ll hear darts of sorrow aiming at your heart,

blueberries falling into your mouth

or the ocean crashing down onto your sandy toes.

Go and open the jade door,

maybe there is a pile of coal burning in your hand,

bats flying in a gloomy cave

or crows squawking in the depths of night.

When the Clouds Fall

Ayush laid his black, button eyes on Mary. As Mary fixed her eyes on Ayush and saw beady eyes blinking like broken headlights in a chimney. His blood-red teeth were like petals from a rose. Ayush’s nose was as sparkly as a golden buzzer on X-Factor. His fur was as soft as a comfortable feather relaxing on a bouncy mattress. His ears were like tunnels leading to cuteness. Quietly, Mary tip-toed to the bear, let him lick her face and stroked Ayush’s fluffy fur. Mary was appalled.

The brave bear bolted back into his home near the beach. As they trudged up to their lonely house, the wind whistled and howled like a werewolf.

“I found him last winter hibernating in his cave whilst I was out fossil hunting, his stomach was growling along with his vocal cords! He looked famished!” Announced Mrs Queen. “This secret’s only between us two. He’ll be more hurt than he was before, if ANYONE finds him!”

The next evening, Mary dreamt about Ayush, hiding in his little cave, his voice echoing out of the cave and into the deep sea, where his growls clear the shade. A part of Ayush’s soul was in sync with Mary’s young, almost unevolved heart.

In the morning, when Mrs Queen was still asleep, Mary would go fishing with Ayush to find the bulky bear some food. Ayush looked for food for himself too. He would eat; blackberries, active ants crawling around in the sand and worms poking out of the cave walls. He was fearful but Mary would calm him down by sitting next to him, feeding him and stroking him.

One late evening, Ayush gave Mary permission to sleep with him. Every so often, he would sniff Mary to make sure she didn’t go fishing without him. Mary transformed. She didn’t wait to come back home in London now and once she had finished supper, she would collect some fish, pretend to go to bed and run all the way to Ayush-happily.

As the sun appeared and disappeared, Mrs Queen saw how the lost bear brought happiness into the lost girl’s life and how both broken hearts had been mended.
