The Grackle.

As the sun rose, Joseph had woken up to some sort of tweeting noise. He could see the silowet of a quite fat bird. Cautiously, Joseph unzipped the tent and saw Robin, the messenger bird. Relieved, the wolf wiped the sweat off forehead and took the letter Robin was carrying. It was from their mother writing about how the Grackle had destroyed the warrens and found their footsteps and was now following them. There wasn’t any time to waste. With Robin’s help, the gang checked the map and headed South.

As they walked off, the wind howled. There had been a storm last night and snow covered the and completely hid the leaves of trees making their journey even harder. Ice had trapped the river underneath it. Joseph knew that the Grackle wouldn’t have to use much effort to track them down as it was impossible to not leave a footstep behind whilst walking on snow. In the afternoon, they had reached the outskirts of the mountain and right there the wolves halted. They could just make out the outline of Vine Village. Maybe they could hide there thought all of the wolves.

A couple of minutes later, the tired band of wolves found themselves right at the entrance of Vine Village. The place was filled with Ogres and trolls, goblins, even pet dragons. Ogres stood at the back of Vine Village so they had to be sneaky. So, wolves roamed and sneaked around the place trying to find a shelter.

As the moon disappeared, tired Joseph found the best hiding place hidden by buildings. It was not a clean but hidden basement. It was covered in straw. Outside the trees swayed. Inside Joseph and Jane talked about the Grackle and wondered if it was close. Baby James was huddled up in a damp corner and soon was asleep.

The oldest crept out to get food he stuck to the dark quiet places and searched around. About three trolls passed the alleyway. Two or three guards trod on a rat then roasted it on top of a ferocious, blood red fire crushing the tiny bones. Joseph shivered. He thought all of the goblins and the trolls were as bad as the Grackle. A few minutes later, Joseph found a deserted market stall. Joseph ‘borrowed’ two loaves of bread, an apple and a carton of milk so they wouldn’t get thirsty.

At that very moment, Joseph  heard a shout from a rusty house isolated in the corner. “OOH ARE YERS?!” An old, wrinkled goblins face peeped out of a shattered window. Nervously, he ducked behind old milk crates. An orange, dirty eye appeared in the shadows. Something was coming closer and closer. The trolls and ogres all clutched a metal bat and worked their way towards the petrified wolf. Shaking, he silently waited hoping he would not be found.
