The Ember Giant
The Ember Giant

Do you think you would be able to recognise an Ember Giant if you saw one? The Ember Giant is the rarest species of Giant, and one of the tallest.

The male Ember Giant is made of rock. In between the cracks, there is red, flowing lava, which gives it a fiery glow. The male is half the size of a cathedral, and it’s width is only 15.5m. They can easily camouflage into a volcano; their natural habitat. Their eyes are a wine red, and their teeth could easily slice an apple in half with one bite! They are extremely hot ( 120°) and would give any human who touched them a second degree burn.

The female Ember Giant is cooler than the male ( 105°) and is 30cm smaller than the male. Instead of being made of standard rock, they are made of a type of black rock, an have a darker glow than the male. The can still camouflage into volcanoes, but, instead of red eyes, they have deep purple eyes.

They live near volcanoes, so when it comes to night they find a warm cave to sleep in. If in winter it becomes lower than -1° than the male hunts with a steel bucket and collects lava for heat. If it begins to snow, Ember Giants cannot leave their caves, because, if snow touches them, then the lava inside if them with turn into to rock, which can be very uncomfortable.

They thrive on red autumn leaves, apples from the tree ( dipped in lava, otherwise it would be too cold for the Ember Giants) and grass.

Although the Ember Giants seems scary, they have a way of protecting their young. Be careful not to go too close, because the Ember Giant might mistake you for an enemy trying to steal its children.

When the stars fall By Eloise SWW

Chapter 4

Looking up, Kendall spotted many stars sewn into the night sky. She was laying on the grass, and staring upwards, trying to connect all the stars, like a dot to dot. It was a Saturday night, and Kendall wanted to try star-gazing for the first time. Miss Rose had lent her an old telescope, that had belonged to James Rose. Miss Rose had also told Kendall to be careful with it, since it was old and fragile. All of a sudden, Kendall saw something rushing by in the sky. She grabbed the telescope, a little carelessly, and put her green eye to it. A shooting star! Kendall turned to look inside the cottage, where Miss Rose was still trying to draw out a plan, to find out who stole the jewels.

Sun was streaming in through the windows when Kendall got out of bed that next morning. She sat up and rummaged through her suitcase for her watch. It was a tattered watch, but at least it still worked. 6:30. Miss Rose liked to get up at 7:30 on a Sunday morning, so Kendall had another rummage through her suitcase for a book. She only read the first few pages before the smell of hash browns, bacon and egg wafted into her room. When she got downstairs, she saw that the piece of paper that Miss Rose had been writing on was full of writing and little abstract drawings. It had little arrows too, in a circle, between each drawing, showing which way to go next. It was like a sort of map! She turned to Miss Rose, but she had big dark circles under her eyes, and her face was pale. Kendall knew that Miss Rose wasn’t well. But she also realised that there was post! “You wouldn’t mind getting that for me, would you Kendall?” croaked Miss Rose. So Kendall did as she was told. She read the envelopes, but they all said for Miss Rose. “Could you open and read them?” she asked, sneezing violently into her handkerchief. “Dear Anna, Happy 29th Birthday! Hope you have a good time, especially with Kendall! From, Mary.” “Ah, that would be Mary Williams from Dove Lane.” “But Miss Rose, if you’re sick, you can’t come find the jewels! Wait, I can go on my own, can’t I?” “Why don’t you take Maddie with you?” Kendall agreed, grabbing her coat and shoes.

“So, Anna’s jewels were stolen, you are trying to find them, and you want to bring me along? Ok!” answered Maddie, excitedly jumping down the steps to her house. “Let me just go tell Lauran that I’m going out with you.” In the short time that Kendall had known Maddie, she knew that she could turn to her for anything she needed.

Turning into the forest, Maddie and Kendall heard something. It sounded like rustling from a bush! Quickly but quietly, they hid behind trees to spy. An eerie figure sauntered across the forest, with a tin in its hands. Another figure followed behind. “It’s Joe! With… Oliver? Is that the tin with the jewels, Kendall? I wonder what they have to do with it?” “Same. But I think we have to find out. We need a distraction.” answered Kendall, thinking. “I have an idea! Wait here, I’ll be back in a sec!” and with that, Maddie disappeared. 10 minutes later, Maddie returned with a small rat. “If I know Joe, one thing he hates is rats. If I let him go, he is sure to scream and drop the tin, so they both run away.” “That’s a good idea!” exclaimed Kendall. And with a countdown, Maddie let the rat go. As she expected, the boys ran away, screaming. The girls burst into laughter and started mocking them. “Come on, let’s find the jewels and return them to Miss Rose.”

Two years later, the war was over, and both of the young girls returned home to their daily lives. Kendall and Maddie wrote to each other frequently, writing also to Miss Rose and Lauran. Kendall thought often of how much fun she had had down in the countryside. Miss Rose rewarded Kendall’s bravery by handing her the gold. Kendall guarded that with her life, and still to this day, she keeps this in her bedroom.

Chapter 3

Kendall had been wondering. What would life be like if somebody had lived in the countryside all their lives? The countryside was a wonderful place, endless sun, flowers and fields of green, lots of places to play. Kendall then thought of the city. Cars rushing through, always busy, not many places to run around freely. The country was different. It felt… free. No bombs, no threats. It felt safe. Even though Kendall missed her Mum, and her Dad at war, this was life now. Kendall trudged over to the backyard rope swing. She wouldn’t have had this back in London. She wouldn’t have made friends with Maddie. She wouldn’t have met Miss Rose. Or have found the jewels and the golden locket and she would have never known about James Rose. The country was exciting, and full of secrets!

Miss Rose had granted Kendall permission to see the jewels. Rubies, sapphires, emeralds, diamonds, gold, silver, bronze, topaz, amethyst, every type of jewel and diamond you can think of, Miss Rose has it. Stroking the jewels, Kendall created a story in her mind for each one of them. The topaz, found on the sandy beach of L.A, the sapphire, found in the Atlantic Ocean, nearly swallowed by a whale. Emerald, found in the Amazon Rain forest, and all the rest. Her favourite story was of the gold. Found on the moon by NASA, brought down to earth, stolen by pirates, and dropped to the bottom of the sea. Found by scuba divers, and given to the bank, who exchanged it in a cheque and gave it to charity. Hours and hours went by and Kendall stayed in the shed with the jewels.

A day later, Kendall did the same. But this time, Kendall went to the jewels because of worry. What if the jewels were stolen? What if somebody saw them? She had to make sure that the jewels were still there. Frantically, she grabbed the keys off the counter top, and ran to the shed. Kendall pushed the key in the keyhole and yanked the door open. She closed her eyes and the door creaked open. Slowly, she opened her eyes to see what terror awaited her. The jewels were… safe! Relief flooded Kendall’s veins.

A week later, Kendall went out to the jewels. She had been avoiding them, because she was too worried to find them stolen. But now, she had over come her fear. She headed out to the shed with the keys. She only walked, because she didn’t want to get there in a hurry. Opening the shed door, she saw the tin. She shook it, and when she felt the heaviness of the jewels, she took the box and headed inside. Miss Rose was sitting at the table and greeted Kendall when she came in. ” Ah, Kendall. Oh, you’ve got the jewels! Lets sit down and talk about them together. It definitely sounds like the jewels! Why, Kendall, stop shaking the box.” ” Sorry, Miss Rose, the jewels just sound different when I shake the tin.” said Kendall. She opened the box, and they were both shocked to find the tin filled with rocks! ” Oh, no!” gasped Miss Rose. ” I knew there was something wrong with the sound!” said Kendall.

“We are going to have to do something. We have to get the jewels back!” said Miss Rose. She had a piece of paper and was drawing out a plan. Kendall agreed. Kendall knew how much Miss Rose enjoyed the company of her jewels. ” Miss Rose, how are we going to find them?” ” I’ve got a plan. Grab yourself a pen from your bedroom, and I will work out the basics, ok? You should find a few pens in the bedside draw. Then, we’ll look for clues in the shed.” Kendall did as she was told and found the pens easily. By the time she got downstairs again, Miss Rose had concocted an easy plan.

Chapter 2

Kendall was shocked. Miss Rose had seemed so kind and good hearted, but she had just nearly shouted at Kendall! Suddenly, Miss Rose’s face softened. She carried on making breakfast, and poured some tea. But Kendall still had so many questions: Were the jewels real? Where did they come from? Why did Miss Rose have them in her shed? Kendall knew not to anger Miss Rose more than she already had. Although she knew this, she couldn’t help asking her one most important question. The one that would determine if Miss Rose was the person Kendall thought she was.
“Did you steal them?” Miss Rose’s facial expression showed that she was most definitely surprised at Kendall’s question. She pursed her lips, sipped her tea, and then answered.
“The jewels? Oh, no Kendall, what type of person do you think I am?”
“How did you get them then? ” asked Kendall, mouth full of bacon.

” A year ago, my husband went off to war. I couldn’t live without him and he knew that. So he left me with something. A metal tin, the same tin you saw in the shed. He also gave me a small locket that I keep in the tin with the jewels. I’ll come on to them later. The locket had two names engraved in it. Anna, my name, and James, my husbands name. He also left me with the jewels as a memory. All real. I wanted to to hang on to them forever, after, after he was, sh, shot. It gave me some kind of hope for the future, being a widow and all, looking after an evacuee, still grieving from the loss of my husband. That’s why I went out at night. I couldn’t get upset in front of you, Kendall. I still miss James. I’m so sorry I didn’t tell you sooner. I know being evacuated is hard, but we are going through this terrible war. And I know me getting upset over something that I can’t change won’t make it any better.” Kendall was not expecting this reply. In fact, she wasn’t expecting a reply at all! Suddenly, Kendall felt bad, and Miss Rose could see that.
” Don’t feel bad, Ken, here have my bit of bacon, and a bit of tea. You might feel better.” said Miss Rose.
Kendall wasn’t hungry, but she took the bacon and tea gratefully. She was actually quite tired, and just wanted to go to bed. She was also started to feel quite sick. Without warning, Miss Rose pulled the locket out from her neck and handed it to Kendall. ” Open it” she said. Inside was a picture of a middle age man, with a woman. It was Miss Rose with James!

Kendall went back out to the shed with Miss Rose. This time she could marvel at the jewels properly, without fearing being caught. The jewels were as delicate as a new-born baby. In daylight, the sunlight created sparkles on the wooden roof above. Now that Kendall had heard Miss Rose’s story, she found the jewels a lot more interesting and special. They must’ve been worth a lot. Kendall just had one more question.
” Where did James get the jewels?” she asked. Kendall waited for Miss Rose’s answer. It looked as if she was thinking.
” I don’t think I remem- wait! He had been saving up money, ever since his eighth birthday. A bit random, I suppose. Before he went off to fight, he decided he had nothing left to do with the money. And he wanted me to remember him. So he went and bought the jewels for me.” Kendall realised she had to keep these jewels safe. But how?

When the sky falls part 1 Eloise SWW

Kendall carefully picked up her favourite book and showed Miss Rose, and then started to read. Stumbling over the words, she carried on in determination. After finishing the first chapter of The Railway Children, Miss Rose went to grab some tea and biscuits. ” Your reading is getting much better, Kendall. It really is. You just have to remember that sometimes, the letter C sounds like an S. Like lace, or race. But I think you need a rest. Take a custard cream and head up to bed, I’ll call you when supper’s ready.” Kendall did as she was told and tip-toed up to bed, realising that the short-tempered cat, Slink, was on the landing. She pulled down the ladder to the attic and climbed up, counting each step. ” Seven, eight, nine,” she muttered under her breath. When she reached the top, she picked up her quilt that was lying on the dusty floor and put it round her like a cape. Her mattress on the floor had small holes in it, but she didn’t mind. She slowly drifted into a deep sleep, and didn’t wake up when Miss Rose called for supper.

Light streamed in through Kendall’s window, and the smell of bacon surrounded her room. She remembered it was a school day, and slipped on her uniform and grabbed her satchel. When she reached the kitchen, there were two plates of bacon and egg and a glass of home made orange juice. Miss Rose finished her breakfast and made a mock banana sandwich and wrapped it in paper. ” Your lunch, Ken, and a slice of fruit cake as a treat.” said Miss Rose. ” Now off you go, you don’t want to be late for your first day.” she said. Kendall packed her bag and walked out the door. Luckily, the village school was only five minutes away. When she arrived, she saw many children her age running around and skipping with ropes, playing hop scotch, and some children playing tag. Kendall felt homesick and wished she was back home with her mum. She walked over to the corner of the playground, away from the children. A girl then appeared next to Kendall and started talking.
” Hi! My names Madlyn, though everybody calls me Maddie, or Mads. Are you an evacuee from London? I already go to this school, don’t worry, most of the children are very welcoming! Anyway, what’s your name?” she said. Kendall was taken aback. She hadn’t wanted anything to do with anyone. But Maddie seemed nice, and had already made her feel welcome. Maybe this was the start of a new friendship?
” My names Kendall, and yes, I’m an evacuee from London.” she said.
” Would you like to be friends? You can sit next to me and I can introduce you to some people. Would you like that?” asked Maddie. Kendall was amazed. She had only been in the playground for five minutes and somebody already wanted to be her friend!
” I would like that very much!” she replied. Suddenly, the school bell rang. All the pupils ran to get inside. Maddie grabbed Kendall’s arm.
” Come on, lets head on inside!” she said.

After a busy day of arithmetic, writing with ink and learning, Kendall walked out of school with her new best friend. Maddie walked home with Kendall.
” Well, here is my home! Thank you so much for helping me today.” said Kendall. She walked inside and said bye to Maddie.
” Miss Rose, I’m home!” Miss Rose walked into the hallway, and helped Kendall take off her coat and bag.
” So, how was it? Did you learn lots? Tell you what, I’ve made some tea, and got the biscuits out. We can have a feast, you can tell me then, ok?” Kendall agreed and sat down on the rocking chair. Miss Rose sat opposite her.
” Guess what, Miss Rose! I made a new friend! Her name is Maddie! And, she introduced me to her classmates!” said Kendall.
” Wow, isn’t that kind! Did you learn anything?” replied Miss Rose.
” We did math, and wrote with ink!”

When Kendall went to bed that night, she discovered something odd. She decided to look at the stars from her bedroom window, and got out of bed. When she reached the window, Kendall realised that Miss Rose was also out of bed! Kendall peered closer, and saw that Miss Rose was heading inside the shed! Then it hit Kendall. Miss Rose had a secret. There was something in the shed, and it had to be secret, because, why would she have to go out at night? This made Kendall curious, so she got back into bed and made a mental list of things she could be hiding. An animal? Weapons? Food? A person? Whatever it was, Miss Rose didn’t want Kendall to know about it. She had never seen her go to the shed during the day. Kendall decided she had to find out what Miss Rose was hiding.

The next night, Kendall waited to hear the back door opening. To double check that Miss Rose was out there, she hurried to her window to see. The speck of light from Miss Rose’s lantern outlined her body. Quickly, Kendall slipped on her coat over her pyjamas and ran out the door after Miss Rose. She made sure to be fast, but quiet. She didn’t want to get in trouble. The shed keys rattled in Miss Rose’s nimble fingers.

Suddenly as if hearing something, Miss Rose turned around. Kendall had been caught!
” Kendall? What on earth are you doing? You’re supposed to be asleep!”
” What are you doing, Miss Rose? Why are you going to the shed every night? I know you have a secret Miss Rose!”

Kendall landed in Miss Rose’s arms after running up to her.
” Oh, Ken, you’re so cold! Thank goodness you put your coat on! You need to get back to bed. It doesn’t matter what I’m doing, you need to get to bed!”
” Please Miss Rose, tell me your secret! You can’t keep it from me! Please!” said Kendall.
” Kendall, I don’t have time for this! Look, I’ll make you some tea, and get some biscuits.”
” No, Miss Rose! ”
” Ken. Bed, now!” Ken was too tired to argue, so she went to bed.
Darkness surrounded her, and the shed was suddenly in front of her, pulling her forward and- Kendall woke up, panting. Luckily it was a weekend. She had Saturday and Sunday to find out the secret. Miss Rose was still sleeping when Kendall passed the bedroom. She swiped the shed keys off the counter top, and ran out the door.

She tried all the keys, until, one of them worked! The shed door slammed open and on the small work table was a box. The lid was tilted. It beckoned Kendall forward and she opened the lid. The box was filled of…
” Kendall! Where on earth are you? You had better not be in the shed!” Miss Rose called. Kendall ran inside and grabbed the cereal, to make it look like she had been getting breakfast. But she was too late.
” Kendall! How dare you open the box of jewels when I told you not to!”
